The Mets have acquired right-hander Joey Gerber in a trade with the Rays, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports. Tampa Bay will receive cash in return for Gerber, who was one of six players the Rays designated for assignment yesterday.
After making his big league debut in the form of 17 games and 15 2/3 innings of 4.02 ball with the Mariners in 2020, Gerber then missed virtually all of the next three seasons due to back surgery and a Tommy John surgery. He resurfaced to pitch in the Yankees’ farm system in 2024, and a subsequent minor league deal with the Rays last winter paved the way for his return to the Show. Gerber appeared in two games (4 1/3 innings) for the Rays in September, posting a 2.08 ERA.
There is still a bit of a “work in progress” aspect to Gerber’s performance in the wake of such an extended layoff, as reflected by his 6.23 ERA over 43 1/3 innings with Durham last season. An inflated .351 BABIP and a lot of home run problems contributed to Gerber’s ERA, but he has a 26.74% strikeout rate over 57 1/3 total frames at the Triple-A level.
It was enough to pique the Mets’ interest, and president of baseball operations David Stearns has long had a reputation for seeking out undervalued relievers with intriguing stuff. Gerber has a minor league option remaining, which gives the Mets some extra roster flexibility if he does happen to make the team.

The Mets need to trade for Skenes unless his new name is Joey Gerber.
Mets can trade for Skubal.
Dodgers will take Skenes. Trying to reduce payroll and all that…
While in semi joking about it, it does make sense in some ways.
But as a baseball fan I would love to see that Pirates field a good team around Skenes.
Skenes is going to be a Yankee. He can join Cole.
Do the Yankees have the pieces for that trade?
doubt it
If they want to send Dominguez, Schlittler, Ben Rice, Lombard etc. sure. You could get there.
Skenes for Gerber straight up.
The Gerber company?
I’m sure there’s a joke in there. Something like Mets going for the usual baby food rather than a full course meal? Best I can do while at work sorry lol
Scott Boras, is that you? LOL 😆
I hear Gerber is pretty toolsy
A real David Stearns Special here
gerber baby!
Stearns is starting to give off a real stench of garbage here with all this dumpster diving. I would know, I found him sleeping next to my bed
Fire Stearns
Stearns is a disaster. His days of masquerading as a competent GM are over.
Stearns probably got his lessons from cashman
Stearns is garbage cause he traded cash for an optionable reliever. #firestearns #dumpsterdivingstearns #angrymetsfans
Stearns said that we needed consistency in our bullpen at the end of the season as the reason we missed the playoffs. Well I’ll give him credit, the bullpen is consistent now, consistently the worst bullpen in the game. You have such a failure of a season and then you decide to sign Joey Gerber and Richard Lovelady as your first big moves, pathetic
Did you have an alternative suggestion, Crybaby?
Crybaby, who have we already missed out on?
@MetsSchmets! they should sign no one now since free agency isn’t open. You sign 10 guys to minor league deals for 500k each, thats 5 million dollars that could of been used on a capable major leaguer. You don’t have a clue
Literally can’t sign anyone besides your own pending free agents until a couple of days from now. And likely because of that teams aren’t going to be trading major pieces until free agency kicks in and they can assess the field and how it meets their needs.
A guy like this is just a warm body to hang out in Syracuse and maybe get in a handful of games. No need to freak out about it.
Gerber’s contract includes endless jars of baby food.
Who will Stearns sign next, Tommy Beechnut.
All these people overreacting to a depth move/flier like it’s going to be the headliner of the offseason are exactly why people don’t take Mets fans very seriously… and this is coming from a lifelong Mets fan.
Seriously, he SAID it was going to be his strategy to keep peeking around the dark corners for potential sleepers as well as going after the big fish. Learn ball ya’ll. No other fan base overreacts this much to depth moves.
Don’t assume people read pass headlines and ERAs.
Oh I don’t, trust me lol. It’s just, I don’t understand how you can see these types of moves happen all the time, across the whole league, even with the winning clubs; and get upset over it like it’s going to dictate the course of the team’s offseason or how they plan on constructing the roster.
