The Red Sox have traded left-hander Brennan Bernardino to the Rockies for a minor leaguer, reports Hunter Noll of Beyond the Monster. That minor league is Braiden Ward, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.
Bernardino, 34 in January, has pitched between 50 and 52 innings for Boston in each of the past three seasons. He has a 3.46 ERA, 23.6% strikeout rate and 9.9% walk rate over 153 1/3 innings during that time. An indie ball find by the Mariners back in 2022, Bernardino has carved out a role as a solid middle reliever, though his average sinker dipped from 91.4 mph in ’24 to 90.7 mph this past season. That modest velo dip was accompanied by more problematic downturns for his strikeout rate (24.8% in ’24, 19.6% in ’25) and walk rate (9.7% in ’24, 11.6% in ’25).
Colorado can control Bernardino for another four years. He’s projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $1.1MM in arbitration this season. He’s a Super Two player, so he’d be due three more raises after that if the Rox keep through his entire six-year window of control.
The 26-year-old Ward was the Rockies’ 16th-round pick in 2021. He hit .290/.395/.391 in 368 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A last year. Ward fanned at just a 16.6% clip and walked 9.5% of the time he stepped into the batter’s box. He’s a center fielder with plus speed who’s also seen time at second base. Ward will be eligible to be selected in next month’s Rule 5 Draft, though the Red Sox are presumably confident he won’t be taken.

I’m sorry. What.
That’s a tough pill to swallow
Why, sure he’s 34 but he’s a good reliever.
Necessary consequence of the roster crunch. As you say, he’s a 34yo reliever, and I believe that this was his last option year. He’s been solid but they have too many other assets that need the roster spot. Between Tolle, Early, and Harrison it feels like they have Bernardino’s role more than covered.
But COL controls him for 4 more years. And Sox could lose this OF shortly in the Rule 5 draft (although the author speculates they think he won’t be selected). Doesn’t look great to me.
Omfg WHY??
Wut….
I fail to see the point of this move for BOS.
Opening a 40-man spot. Clearly Red Sox like Moran more than Bernardino and Murphy. Moran has the most upside and Cora has used Bernardino with kid’s gloves.
Would be unfortunate if Ward is taken in the rule-5 draft though.
Bernardino was actually a decent reliever these past few years. Moran has been trash.
@Joemo I’ve always liked the story of Bernardino, but most of his success has come as an opener and in low leverage situations. Last year he had a 7.49 K/9 and 4.53 BB/9 – which are awful numbers. His ERA was only good due to very lucky 2.1% HR/FB and a .252 BABIP. Given that he’s hitting arbitration, it was a good time to sell on him
Moran is more than 5 years his younger and has strikeout stuff (11.08 K/9 career). For his career he has had major control issues (5.21 BB/9) but this year in AAA he had only 1.63 BB/9 so perhaps he figured something out. Given his minimum contract and 5 years of control I can see why the Red Sox chose to keep him. Then again, the Red Sox still need to make space for free agents, so I wouldn’t consider his spot safe.
Have seen Ward a bit. He can play. IF/OF utility guy with blinding speed (easily a top ten fastest guy in the minors) and a knack for getting on base, but no power and not super young.
Hamilton replacement?
Can get on base is really all the red Sox need from someone like that
Bernardino was one of my favorites, really enjoyed having him on the Sox. Gonna miss having him come out of the pen.
Any pitcher should have a right to waive a trade to CO especially in their current state
Would never happen but poor Brennan
I liked Berny, will miss him but space on the 40 man is premium this time of year. He was a solid reliever but at the end of the day replaceable enough I’m not going to lose sleep over it. Good luck in Denver BB!
Had a great season for Boston and was ultra valuable in many different spots. Not sure I love the move, the Sox should have held onto him. Poor guy going to COL, ERA about to be through the roof
So, the Red Sox are now operating sans Bernadino?
