White Sox catcher Kyle Teel has been drawing trade interest, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon. This item comes a few days after another report indicating that Sox backstop Edgar Quero was also receiving trade inquiries.
It would take “a spectacular return” for Chicago to deal either catcher, in the words of Rosenthal and Sammon. This aligns with recent comments made by White Sox GM Chris Getz, who told Sox Machine’s James Fegan that “I don’t think” it was time for the Sox to consider trading from their depth behind the plate.
The fact that rival clubs are even asking about Teel or Quero is a reminder that teams make all sorts of due-diligence inquiries about many players, no matter how seemingly unlikely a trade would seem. Teel and Quero are top-100 prospects who just finished their rookie seasons, and are under team control through the 2031 season. On paper, there is little reason why a rebuilding team like the White Sox would be open to dealing either catcher so early in their careers.
Even if the Sox might already have one of Teel or Quero specifically in mind as their proverbial catcher of the future, there’s no immediate reason for the club to move the other, especially when the duo can split time behind the plate in 2026 and also gain extra at-bats via the DH role. Catching depth is such a rare commodity around the league that it isn’t surprising to see teams inquire about what is technically a surplus for Chicago at the position (Korey Lee is also on the 40-man roster), but for that same reason, the Sox are surely wary about trading from this surplus.
Teel is the higher-profile of the two catchers, as the Red Sox selected him 14th overall in the 2023 draft and Teel was perhaps the key piece of the trade package Chicago received for Garrett Crochet last offseason. Called up to the Show in early June, Teel made a strong showing in his rookie year, hitting .273/.375/.411 with eight home runs in his first 297 plate appearances against big league pitching. By comparison, Quero hit .268/.333/.356 with five homers in 403 PA, and neither catcher was particularly impressive from a defensive standpoint.

do not trade either of them, please
That’s interesting I thought he was untouchable considering he was the main piece getting from Boston. I bet boston would love to have him back.
What’s interesting? This isn’t an indication that he IS UNTOUCHABLE or not. Just that teams are calling. He’s basically untouchable though.
They are probably pretty happy with Crochet
“I bet boston would love to have him back.”
They managed to find a very serviceable youngish catcher in Carlos Narváez and now have one of the very best starting pitchers in the majors locked up for the foreseeable future.
I’m betting Boston is over the moon with how everything turned out.
mlb – YES!!!!!!
Trading Teel was a huge mistake, Breslow was desperate because he lost out on signing Burnes, Fried and Snell therefore Crochet was his last chance …. so he caved.
Trade Teel back to Boston for Tolle, Campbell, Rafaela, Harrison, Hicks, Password and Criswell.
Calm down. Teel was traded for an ace. At best that trade is fair for both teams. Otherwise, the red Sox still come out better for it.
Tang – Wayyy too soon to put a final ranking on the Crochet trade. So far, so good though.
Of course. To really judge a trade you need to basically have all players near retirement before you can say. That said, crochet is exactly what we all hoped he would be. He was not my number 1 target last year, but I’m happy to be wrong on him.
Tang – Same here. I obviously was concerned about Crochet’s ability to stay healthy, so far he has alleviated my concern.
No Way!, Raffy was the best Center Fielder in the American League, 2nd only to Pete Crow Armstrong in all baseball most of the year in defense, you dont trade that for a catcher.
Poly – If all you care about is defense, JBJ would gladly return to the majors with the Red Sox.
Its not all i care about, but i do care about it, this ain’t the Yankees, we don’t have Judge, Stanton, Grish banging out hrs like its going out of style.
We win with pitching, defense and timely hitting. Honestly, i am not opposed to trading for Teel, but no way in heck id ever trade Raffy, he is just too valuable and his bat still has potential, him and Pete Crow were Elite defensively and their respective teams both made the playoffs, you think that is by accident?
Look how much better this team got after we dumped Fatboy at 3rd, you wanna go back to bad defense? I guess you like last place because Bregmans bat wasnt that great, it was his Glove that made us 100x better.
And no way in heck id want to lose that in Center, ill keep the Elite D, it helps keep another right handed bat with potential in the lineup, which we sorely need.
Poly – I think it’s all about team balance between offense and defense. Both are important, but with the Sox having 4 strong defensive outfielders they could lose Rafaela and be just fine. It won’t happen though, not with his contract.
You mention PCA and him, what about the three guys who are right behind them defensively ….. Young, Scott and Isbel. They didn’t exactly lead their teams to glory this year.
But hey you’re a big Rafaela fan and I respect that. He is obviously excellent out in CF and he’s got value as a backup middle infielder. But mark my words, if KC figures it out and gets back to what he was then he could easily replace Rafaela as a multi-position player with a much better bat. Because at the end of the day, offense helps win games a lot more than defense. You don’t see guys like Judge, Vlad, Stanton, and Soto getting monster contracts for their defense.
The Yankees have won 1 title since like 2002, the Sox have won 4 and the last two we only had papi as our basher in 13.
I don’t care to follow their model if possible, at first you can sorta take the bad D, but Center and 3rd you really need someon with strong defense.
Roman and Abreu both have 30hr potential easily, didnt Wilyer have 22 before that long arse DL Stint? He shouldve easily had 30hr with speed and Elite D. Roman probably has 35hr power, but is a lil slower developing his power.
I would prefer to not go the yankees route of all power and no D, they arent winning championships with it, despite some of the most big name aces on their staff.
Bring back Bregman, Trade for Gore n CJ Abrams, put him at 2nd, you dont need to run as far, much easier position for him defensively.
There is still one of the Twins starters we could trade for also. im not opposed to Alonso at first, but Schwarber is a dh only at this point.
So far so good for both teams, but Sox hasn’t had the best name in the trade play in bigs yet. Braden Montgomery should be a stud for Sox. Medrioth not to bad either with Wilkelman Gonzalez doing a decent job. Im happy with that trade
We’ll give you Wong and Hicks haha
Neither is that good defensively it seems so part time catcher, position switch might be expected.
Absolutely don’t trade either one. No reason (barring injury) White Sox with have the best catching duo in MLB for years to come. Why trade from a strong pair of catchers when most teams barely have 1 above avg catcher? Sox should at least break even in 2026 or very close to it or better. If Sox wanna PO more fans…that’ll be the way to do it. If they leave Will Venable alone, he will turn Sox around soon.
Red Sox should give this a look 😂
Meow – More than a look, they should give a head to toe stare ;O)
It’s highly unlikely that Teel is traded.
Yep. There’s no way they are moving him.
bob – I think it depends on Chicago’s timeline for competing. If it’s longer than 3 years, they should move him.
I think the White Sox owe it to their fans and every reason to push for a 3 year timeline to competing. Good farm system, a lot of kids recently graduated or in the upper minors. AL Central is not a juggernaut and not expected to become one soon. If that’s not a good enough setup to start trying, what will be?
Teel: 125 wRC+, 105 wRC+ and 2.1/473 fWAR/PA fangraphs projection
Quero: 95 wRC+, 103 and 1.2/487 projection
Do not trade either, these guys are good building blocks. It would have to be a mind-blowing package for either to be moved. We don’t need a perpetual rebuild like other teams…
Especially since there is a path to playing both every day in what is going to be another non-competitive season. Carry a third catcher and play them both at either C or DH daily. They don’t have to figure out the surplus now. They can sort it out next off-season if they want.
They could choose not to trade either of them or they choose not to employ a full time DH down the line while carrying a 3rd catcher. Let Teel and Quero develop for a couple seasons at minimum.
Yeah, I didn’t say otherwise
The A’s traded Murphy faster than many of their other players but these two have just begun to play for White Sox.
I saw Tell in 5 games at AAA. He can hit and has a cannon for an arm. He doesn’t move that well behind the plate. It as tough to tell how good a came he calls because the Charlotte Knights pitching was horrible at AAA.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they think he will be a 1B sooner rather than later. This may be an attempt to score even more talent for a young, controllable player who other teams thinks will stay at catcher.
He has unique roster flexibility down the line if he flames out as a catcher with 1B/LF
Market seems to think the White Sox will trade one and not the other.
I’d stick with Kyle Teel if one has to be traded, but we will see.
This is where I’m at. If you are blown away or can trade Quero for a similar valued player at another position (another SP, an outfielder, etc), I think I would deal him.
Agreed. Trading both would be foolish, but Quero for someone like a power-hitting outfielder would be productive (or for 2 lower level prospects with upside).
Surprised that they included Teel in the Crochet trade , considering they already had Quero. Did they demand Teel over a different prospect? Would they have made the trade without him in the deal?
They really liked Teel the year he was drafted and probably would have drafted him had he made it to them.
cdc – hi!
If Breslow was a good negotiator and had leverage, he could have easily swapped Mayer or Campbell for Teel and probably pulled back Monty too.
Remember both KC and Mayer were much more highly ranked than Teel.
The White Sox aren’t going to trade either of them. Not unless they get some massive package
Teams generally need two catchers to survive a season. They should be able to build around both of these guys, given they both have decent bats for a catcher. Maybe get some work in at 1B to increase the roster flexibility, but no reason to rush to trade either of these young catchers.
Quero being traded for a good cost controlled OF that can hit may happen, but dealing Teel would defeat the purpose of trying to rebuild to mere relevance. Lee would be the backup C or even main temporary backstop if they want Teel to play another position.
There is no scenario where they are trading both
Didn’t say that. Just that Lee could be doing lot of catching for now if they want to experiment Teel in OF while trading away Quero. They would have to really not like Teel’s catching to switch his position that fast.
Teel played OF for one inning last year, Venable said they’ll only use Teel in the outfield in an emergency type situation. Ditto for Lee.
Ken Rosenthal trying to will things into existence again. It would make zero sense for the Sox to trade either of them. Rosenthal and his gossip rag (The Athletic) thinks only like 2-3 teams should even exist in MLB.
Trade Teel for Jose Rameriz and Gavin Williams
Lmao
Rather trade you for a sack of potatoes.
In your dreams lol
Please Red Sox… trade for him!!!
I can’t endure watching Wong play anymore.
who – Whatta ya mean, Wong is so great he was traded straight up for Mookie (if you don’t count the others the Red Sox received who are now gone and not in MLB anymore).
LOL Yes, let’s put an end to the Mookie saga… Red Sox biggest blunder in their history. We need an upgrade to complement Narvaez.
Wong doesn’t play that much. You must have thought 2 years ago was awful too.
Wonnnnggg, Grandpa is talking to you…
3 straight 100 loss seasons. No one should be untradable. Terrible brand of baseball from ownership to low minors. Ask the Southside.
This guy would make any team better wish my halos would reach out
Ask the Pirates how Endy/Davis worked out.
Quero could bring back some offense. Alec Bohm straight up?
Alec bohm for Korey Lee maybe but def not Quero. I’m not giving up 6 years of control of a catcher for a barely above league average 3B that is approaching 30. He won’t help the team contend nor will he be apart of their next good team
The Phillies should offer top pitching prospect Andrew Painter for Teel, straight up — it’s a deal that will help both clubs.
Nope.
Nope+
Phillies acquire:
– L. Robert RF (1/$20M + 2 player options)
– K. Teel C
White Sox acquire:
– T. Walker SP (1$/18M)
– R. Marchan C
– J. Rojas CF
– G. Rincones Jr. RF (#9)
– A. Escobar 3B/2B (#5)
Is this enough White Sox fans? Would your front office gamble on Taijuan being a rotation stabilizer and trade deadline chip – to be free of the multiple player options on Robert? Marchan and Rojas are cheap, reliable replacements for the rebuild. Phils could still resign JT for 2 years, but Teel is going to be really good.
Nope
What would you think of Justin Crawford for Quero+?
That wouldn’t be a great trade.
Crawford is the #54 prospect in MLB. I doubt that Philly would trade him for Quero straight up.
baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=cra…
Phillies aren’t giving up Painter, Phillies farm is strictly pitching.
What does Painter have to do with a potential Crawford trade?
Heck No
The only way they should move Teel, would be for Konnor Griffin. Otherwise, Quero for a quality starting young OF is the way to go.
Trade Lee, keep the other two
Other sources: Sox not interested in trading Kyle Teel
