White Sox catcher Kyle Teel has been drawing trade interest, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon. This item comes a few days after another report indicating that Sox backstop Edgar Quero was also receiving trade inquiries.
It would take “a spectacular return” for Chicago to deal either catcher, in the words of Rosenthal and Sammon. This aligns with recent comments made by White Sox GM Chris Getz, who told Sox Machine’s James Fegan that “I don’t think” it was time for the Sox to consider trading from their depth behind the plate.
The fact that rival clubs are even asking about Teel or Quero is a reminder that teams make all sorts of due-diligence inquiries about many players, no matter how seemingly unlikely a trade would seem. Teel and Quero are top-100 prospects who just finished their rookie seasons, and are under team control through the 2031 season. On paper, there is little reason why a rebuilding team like the White Sox would be open to dealing either catcher so early in their careers.
Even if the Sox might already have one of Teel or Quero specifically in mind as their proverbial catcher of the future, there’s no immediate reason for the club to move the other, especially when the duo can split time behind the plate in 2026 and also gain extra at-bats via the DH role. Catching depth is such a rare commodity around the league that it isn’t surprising to see teams inquire about what is technically a surplus for Chicago at the position (Korey Lee is also on the 40-man roster), but for that same reason, the Sox are surely wary about trading from this surplus.
Teel is the higher-profile of the two catchers, as the Red Sox selected him 14th overall in the 2023 draft and Teel was perhaps the key piece of the trade package Chicago received for Garrett Crochet last offseason. Called up to the Show in early June, Teel made a strong showing in his rookie year, hitting .273/.375/.411 with eight home runs in his first 297 plate appearances against big league pitching. By comparison, Quero hit .268/.333/.356 with five homers in 403 PA, and neither catcher was particularly impressive from a defensive standpoint.

do not trade either of them, please
That’s interesting I thought he was untouchable considering he was the main piece getting from Boston. I bet boston would love to have him back.
What’s interesting? This isn’t an indication that he IS UNTOUCHABLE or not. Just that teams are calling. He’s basically untouchable though.
They are probably pretty happy with Crochet
“I bet boston would love to have him back.”
They managed to find a very serviceable youngish catcher in Carlos Narváez and now have one of the very best starting pitchers in the majors locked up for the foreseeable future.
I’m betting Boston is over the moon with how everything turned out.
mlb – YES!!!!!!
Trading Teel was a huge mistake, Breslow was desperate because he lost out on signing Burnes, Fried and Snell therefore Crochet was his last chance …. so he caved.
Trade Teel back to Boston for Tolle, Campbell, Rafaela, Harrison, Hicks, Password and Criswell.
Neither is that good defensively it seems so part time catcher, position switch might be expected.
Red Sox should give this a look 😂
It’s highly unlikely that Teel is traded.
Yep. There’s no way they are moving him.
Teel: 125 wRC+, 105 wRC+ and 2.1/473 fWAR/PA fangraphs projection
Quero: 95 wRC+, 103 and 1.2/487 projection
Do not trade either, these guys are good building blocks. It would have to be a mind-blowing package for either to be moved. We don’t need a perpetual rebuild like other teams…
Especially since there is a path to playing both every day in what is going to be another non-competitive season. Carry a third catcher and play them both at either C or DH daily. They don’t have to figure out the surplus now. They can sort it out next off-season if they want.
They could choose not to trade either of them or they choose not to employ a full time DH down the line while carrying a 3rd catcher. Let Teel and Quero develop for a couple seasons at minimum.
Yeah, I didn’t say otherwise
The A’s traded Murphy faster than many of their other players but these two have just begun to play for White Sox.
I saw Tell in 5 games at AAA. He can hit and has a cannon for an arm. He doesn’t move that well behind the plate. It as tough to tell how good a came he calls because the Charlotte Knights pitching was horrible at AAA.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they think he will be a 1B sooner rather than later. This may be an attempt to score even more talent for a young, controllable player who other teams thinks will stay at catcher.
He has unique roster flexibility down the line if he flames out as a catcher with 1B/LF
Market seems to think the White Sox will trade one and not the other.
I’d stick with Kyle Teel if one has to be traded, but we will see.
This is where I’m at. If you are blown away or can trade Quero for a similar valued player at another position (another SP, an outfielder, etc), I think I would deal him.
Agreed. Trading both would be foolish, but Quero for someone like a power-hitting outfielder would be productive (or for 2 lower level prospects with upside).
Surprised that they included Teel in the Crochet trade , considering they already had Quero. Did they demand Teel over a different prospect? Would they have made the trade without him in the deal?
They really liked Teel the year he was drafted and probably would have drafted him had he made it to them.
The White Sox aren’t going to trade either of them. Not unless they get some massive package
Teams generally need two catchers to survive a season. They should be able to build around both of these guys, given they both have decent bats for a catcher. Maybe get some work in at 1B to increase the roster flexibility, but no reason to rush to trade either of these young catchers.
Quero being traded for a good cost controlled OF that can hit may happen, but dealing Teel would defeat the purpose of trying to rebuild to mere relevance. Lee would be the backup C or even main temporary backstop if they want Teel to play another position.
There is no scenario where they are trading both
Didn’t say that. Just that Lee could be doing lot of catching for now if they want to experiment Teel in OF while trading away Quero. They would have to really not like Teel’s catching to switch his position that fast.
Teel played OF for one inning last year, Venable said they’ll only use Teel in the outfield in an emergency type situation. Ditto for Lee.
Ken Rosenthal trying to will things into existence again. It would make zero sense for the Sox to trade either of them. Rosenthal and his gossip rag (The Athletic) thinks only like 2-3 teams should even exist in MLB.
Trade Teel for Jose Rameriz and Gavin Williams
Lmao
Rather trade you for a sack of potatoes.
In your dreams lol
Please Red Sox… trade for him!!!
I can’t endure watching Wong play anymore.
3 straight 100 loss seasons. No one should be untradable. Terrible brand of baseball from ownership to low minors. Ask the Southside.
This guy would make any team better wish my halos would reach out
