Mets Interested In Tyler Rogers

By Mark Polishuk | December 10, 2025 at 2:29pm CDT

Acquired in a deadline deal from the Giants, Tyler Rogers performed well over his two months in a Mets uniform, posting a 2.30 ERA over 27 1/3 innings.  The Amazins are now interested in a reunion, as Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Mets are one of the interested teams within “a very strong market” for the veteran right-hander.

Rogers is entering his age-35 season, he has only a 17.6% career strikeout rate, and his fastball velocity averaged just 83.5mph in 2025.  All of these factors would seemingly make modern front offices steer clear of Rogers, yet the results don’t lie — few pitchers in all of baseball are better at limiting hard contact, inducing grounders, or limiting walks.  A unique submarine-style delivery only adds to Rogers’ old-school approach, contributing to his 2.76 ERA over 424 career innings as a bullpen workhorse.

MLB Trade Rumors ranked Rogers 42nd on our list of the offseason’s top 50 free agents, and projected a two-year, $18MM deal for the righty.  Over the weekend, ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote that Rogers looks “primed to get a three-year deal,” which speaks to the robust interest in the reliever’s services.  The Mets join the Marlins and Mariners as the only other teams publicly linked to Rogers, yet it is fair to guess that most teams in need of bullpen help have at least checked in on his market.

New York has added Devin Williams to its late-game mix, Cooper Criswell was added on waivers, and some other arms have been signed on minor league contracts.  However, the Mets are in greater need of bullpen help than when they started the offseason, since Edwin Diaz, Gregory Soto, and Ryan Helsley have all signed elsewhere.  Bringing Rogers back as an innings-eater and stabilizing force within the pen would be a huge help for the Mets as another step toward rebuilding their relief corps.

This plus adding Robert Suarez would go a long way to replacing Diaz. Take the Alonso money and spend on relievers.

I like your thinking on signing Rogers and Suarez or Fairbanks. But not in lieu of Pete’s Salary.

Vientos or McNeil at 1st won’t cut it. Okamoto is the ideal signing at 1B. He won’t hit as many HR’s as Pete but will hit for better AVG. and play better 1B D. Also cost a lot less. They have to put someone behind Soto to protect him or Soto will break the record for Walks in a year.

          KennyF’nPowers,

At this point I think Mets should just keep first base warm for first base power hitting prospect Ryan Clifford who will start the season in AAA. He also plays outfield corners so provides flexibility.

I like Clifford but he’s roughly the same D at 1st as Pete, or a little worse, and not as much Power. He’s got good Power but he’s a poor man’s version of Pete. Similar to Vientos but with a better OBP, which is odd for a power hitter as he has a good K/BB ratio. I think when he comes up he’ll be a blend of 1B/OF/DH but not a set everyday player at one position. I hope I’m wrong but we’ll see if he progresses a little more in AAA this year.
Okamoto will just cost money which is something Cohen has plenty of. They’re going to need some power bats to make up for Pete and Nimmo’s HR’s and Doubles.

\Recent scouting reports say Clifford’s now an above average first baseman and solid in outfield corners with very strong arm. Its safer for these risk averse Mets to invest in a prospect who’s improving and has 30 homer power, improved foot speed and good mental make up. He’ faster and better defensively than Vientos.

Clearly, Cohen no longer wants to spend money recklessly. That comes with a cost of locked in roster spot and 110% payroll tax.

I like Clifford and hope you’re right. He will play all, or almost all, year in AAA and hopefully improves more to be an everyday option for this Team. His Power element is something this Team lacks especially with its top Prospects. Except for maybe Benge who has 20-30 HR Power. Benge reminds me of Nimmo.

I disagree on Cohen’s spending. He has more money than God. He has a new Casino coming and a Park with mass Businesses around Citi Field for HUGE Revenue. You can expect this Dodgers Budget to stay like this for probably the next 5-10 years. I also don’t see the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Phillies to slow down spending anytime soon. To beat them you have to spend with them. Being cheap in a large Market never won anything for the Coupons. I mean Wilpons. Cohen bought this Team to change that and make us like the Dodgers and Yankees. The minute Cohen cuts back spending the Mets faithful will let him know it. Cohen is the exact opposite of the Wilpons.

Yes, let’s get him back but not at that price. Maybe more (3) years to bring the annual down.

You like everyone before him has undervalued the poor guy. His brother got more money from the giants and did far far less.

One of the few good relievers that are left in the market. He had 81 appearances and 77. He has 2 consecutive years of 75+ appearances.

Thankfully Astros already have a setup man workhorse so we don’t need to dig in FA market for bullpen.

MLBTR actually thinks that the reliever market is thinning out for the Mets because Ryan Helsley and Gregory Soto are off the board.
