The Red Sox have had talks with the Rangers about a Corey Seager deal, reports Tim Healey and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. Seager joins a growing list of Boston trade targets that includes Ketel Marte, Isaac Paredes, and Brendan Donovan. The club has also been connected to free agentsBo Bichette, Pete Alonso, and Eugenio Suarez. WEEI’s Rob Bradford reports there isn’t any momentum regarding Boston’s pursuit of Seager.
While the club has been connected to several players in the trade market, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow admitted some discussions have been slow to progress. “In a lot of the conversations that we’ve had, a number of teams have conveyed that they’re very comfortable holding onto their players, as are we,” Breslow said. “So that does add a little bit of a layer of difficulty to try to make these things work.”
Seager delivered a typical season in 2025, providing stellar offensive production in between IL stints. The 31-year-old notched a 138 wRC+ across 102 games. Seager fell short of 30 home runs for the first time as a Ranger, largely due to missing time with a hamstring strain (twice) and an appendectomy. His 445 plate appearances were his fewest since his final year with the Dodgers in 2021.
Texas landed Seager on a massive 10-year, $325MM deal ahead of the 2022 season. He’s been an integral part of the lineup over the past four seasons and led the team to a World Series win in 2023. Seager finished second in AL MVP voting that year, but still went home with individual hardware after securing World Series MVP honors.
Seager will make $31MM in each of the next six seasons. There have been whispers that Texas would be trimming payroll this offseason. The team already chose to non-tender Adolis García and Jonah Heim instead of paying their arbitration price tags. The Rangers also traded Marcus Semien, who had three years and $72MM remaining on his contract, but the deal brought back Brandon Nimmo, who is slated to make $101.25MM through the 2030 season. The Mets did toss in $5MM as part of the trade.
Texas could use some help in the rotation and the bullpen. Linking up with Boston in a trade could help cheaply patch those holes. Breslow has said the team is willing to deal controllable starting pitching. Boston bolstered the rotation by adding Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo via trade. Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello are locked into rotation spots, which leaves little room for youngsters Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, and Hunter Dobbins. Veterans Patrick Sandoval and Kutter Crawford are also expected to be back healthy.
Trevor Story served as Boston’s primary shortstop last season. After multiple injury-riddled seasons, the former Rockie came through with a resurgent year. Story launched 25 home runs and stole a career-high 31 bases. He remains on the books for $25MM in each of the next two seasons. The contract also includes a $25MM club option for 2028. Story exclusively played second base in his first year in Boston, with Xander Bogaerts holding down shortstop. He could slide back to the keystone if the club acquires Seager, though that would require some reshuffling with Ceddanne Rafaela and potentially others. Center fielder Jarren Duran has been the subject of frequent trade talks, and his departure would clear a spot for Rafaela in the outfield.

Propaganda
Trade rumor
Dear 8 pound, 6 ounce baby Jesus. Don’t even know a word yet. I just want to thank you for this post.
I prefer the baby version, when you say grace, you can say whichever you like!
Make sure to be properly thankful for being blessed with Walker and Texas Ranger

Boston on paper has what it takes to get this done. Will be interesting to see if Texas moves on this then it’s rebuilding time
“Rebuilding time” would be odd considering their acquisition of Nimmo and the five years, ~$96 million remaining on his deal. I would think a deal like this would be more about selling high on Seager to stock the farm and cutting some salary to potentially spend elsewhere.
Selling high and stocking the farm=rebuild. Nimmo is a nice player I think he’s criminally underrated but without Seager and everyone non tendered who’s left?
Payroll space
Seager is one of my favorite players. While there isn’t a spot for him on the Dodgers, he would make any team much better. I hope it’s not true, because he moved there to be close to family.
Seager would do well at Fenway too.
Another Dodgers Fan: He moved where and why do you care?
He moved to Texas. He was a fan favorite in LA, but decided he wanted to live closer to his family. No taxes obviously was a bonus as well. It was the best of all worlds for him and no one could fault the logic and call him greedy or whatever.
I care because he was a great player for the Dodgers, and an excellent person. With an excellent family. I root for him to do well, as I do certain other former Dodgers.
Does that explain things well enough?
Another Dodgers Fan: But how would it affect you if he gets traded and moves to New England?
Also we have no income tax in Texas. California could not compete.
drprofkevin: The tradeoff being, of course, that you have to actually live in Texas. 🤣
If the Dodgers wanted him, they could always move Mookie back to the outfield or put Seager at second base.
Would be interesting if it was a story for seate swap with some young players included, it would save Texas some money and add some young talent
Due diligence probably more than anything else.
Sox need a slugger, especially one that can actually stay on the field
Seager for Yoshida and Duran.
Seager for Yoshida Hicks and Duran.
If your team wants to trim payroll, or get younger, how would this achieve either of those two things?
Seager 6 year those guys 2
I feel like they could do better than that.
But… I thought all the media rumors were that he was going to the Yankees.
I would think Trevor Story would head to Texas to offset some of the salary. It would probably cost Boston a higher value prospect, but it would be a lot better than having both Story and Seager.
I would think Story + Tolle or Early + a low level high ceiling guy like Dorian Soto could work.
Alternately, they could keep Story and move him to second or another club and instead use Yoshida to slightly offset salary and add both Tolle AND Early along with a guy like Soto.
Lots of possibilities when you have the assets and payroll of the Red Sox.
Texas could do Yoshida and Hicks instead of story and try and make Hicks the closer.
This seems rather silly. I don’t understand why the Red Sox would want to take on that contract. Seager will not get any healthier and recall his brother was out of baseball at age 32. Doesn’t make any sense to me, Boston has young players to take this position going forward.
Son – it doesnt make sense. Why do the Red Sox feel they need to continuously leak out this type of drivel. They did this same stupid thing last year. Apparently , they’re the only team that talks to every other team about every player.
Seems sketchy but it is Boston and they got the money to pay out. Guess this could mean they’re out on both Bichette and Bregman..
I like Seager, but this just feels like a typical Sox infielder trade where we give up a lot and get a recently productive player who then proceeds to go crap the bed while we owe him a ridiculous amount of money.
This is out of the blue. The Red Sox need RH bats. The Red Sox could easily sign Bregman and Alonso and then package Duran or Abreu with Early and another prospect to go get a legit #2 starter. Then fill out the pen with some quality arms and a couple of vets off the bench.
Love Seager, but he’s hurt all the time. If the Red Sox are willing to take on a large contract, I don’t think this is the one……
Corey is a legend here but if they can lose the backend of that deal Chris Young is a genius.
If the Rangers traded Semein to Dave $ and looking to move Seager for the fans reason them why aren’t they putting deGrom on the market since he’s 37 and “only” signed for 3 years? It seems like they are retooling looking beyond 2026 at least? They could easily get a boatload for him in s think market for FOR options. Just about every team would be in on him.
Is Boston not wanting Bregman back? Trading for Seager is extreme. Do they not have faith in Mayer? I’m sure Rangers would take Anthony back
They could be holding back until the SP market becomes more settled, maybe. I’d bet the interest would spike if anything comes out of that rumor about Skubal going to the Dodgers.
They have a glut of young players
Might as well pull the trigger and go for it
Acquire Seager make him your 2B
Sign Bichette
Trade for Paredes or resign Bergman
Possibly trade Mayer for Skubal and sign him to an extension. I’d also possibly move Kristian Campbell to the Royals or Pirates some of their SP.
6/189M for a 32 yr old SS that misses almost 50 games a season OR go sign ZBo Bichette who is 28.
Paging Mike Elias…
Seager is a great player that can’t stay healthy.
That doesn’t magically get better with age. Sox should not make this move.
Duran plays LF
And I would approve of most any trade package to get Seager. Game changer, still in his prime.
