2:06pm: Vaughn has been diagnosed with a fractured hand and will miss four to six weeks due to the injury, as relayed by McCalvy. He figures to undergo hamate surgery in the coming days.
11:16am: The Brewers are set to recall catching prospect Jeferson Quero for his MLB debut, per Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extrabase. A corresponding active roster move has not been announced, though MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reports that first baseman Andrew Vaughn is headed for the injured list due to a hand injury.
Quero, 23, was signed out of Venezuela by the Brewers as an international amateur and made his pro debut in the Arizona Complex League back in 2021. Since then, he’s climbed the minor league ladder fairly steadily but enjoyed a breakout season in 2023 that put him on the map as a prospect to watch. That year, he hit a very impressive .262/.339/.440 across 90 games at the Double-A level as a 20 year old while showing the ability to handle the catcher position. That was enough to make him a consensus top-40 prospect in the sport.
Since then, Quero’s star has lost some of its shine thanks to injuries. He played in just one game during the 2024 season due to a significant shoulder injury that wound up requiring surgery. He returned to the field of play last year, but a hamstring injury helped limit him to just 68 games, only 59 of which were at the Triple-A level. In the 250 plate appearances he did receive at Triple-A, the then-22-year-old Quero hit just .255/.336/.412. His 10.0% walk rate and 14.0% strikeout rate show solid plate discipline and contact ability, but he didn’t hit for much power to speak of with just 21 extra-base hits and six homers in that time. That 101 wRC+ showing, in conjunction with injury woes and questions about his arm strength following shoulder surgery, was enough to knock Quero off most top-100 prospect lists this offseason.
Still, it’s fair to remember that Quero hasn’t really struggled much at the plate throughout his minor league career to this point and has shown the skills necessary to be a quality catcher. It would surprise no one if he becomes an impressive partner to William Contreras in the Milwaukee catching tandem in the fairly near future. With that being said, that end goal appears relatively far off given the presence of Gary Sanchez on the club’s 40-man roster. He serves as Contreras’s primary backup and, as a veteran who has been a roughly league average offensive player for several years now, he should have a considerable leash in that role.
For now, however, the Brewers are going with a three-catcher roster due to Vaughn’s injury. Though only a league average hitter for his career, Vaughn slashed a sensational .308/.375/.493 in 63 games with Milwaukee last year after being acquired from the White Sox midway through the year. That showing was enough for the Brewers to hand Vaughn the keys to the first base job, but after he left yesterday’s game due to a hand injury he’s evidently now ticketed for a trip to the shelf. It’s unclear just how long Vaughn will be out of commission at this point, and while he’s gone adding Quero to the roster should free Sanchez up for some starts at first base. Quero, as another right-handed hitter, also keeps a righty bat in the club’s bench mix.
Of course, Sanchez isn’t likely to be the only one in the first base mix while Vaughn is out. Switch-hitting Luis Rengifo could see some time there, creating an opportunity to get more playing time as he shares third base with David Hamilton. Another option would be to get lefty-swinging outfielder Jake Bauers in at first base, which would then open the door for one of Rengifo, switch-hitter Blake Perkins, or righty hitter Brandon Lockridge in the outfield mix. Bauers is the most experienced first baseman on the roster at this point, with over 2000 innings at the position in the majors throughout his career.

Excited for Quero, but now I’m wondering if something happened to Contreras or Sanchez.
Vaughn
In that case, ESPN Fantasy better update Vaughn’s IL status for my team.
Think it’s a chance to get his feet wet and at the same time make sure that other guys stay in under their service time. Like Black if stays down until June or July then he becomes more valuable in trade because he will still have 5 to 6 years of control.
I’m surprised nothing has been said about Carlos Vargas hitting the IL and Wilcox getting recalled.
It was reported on, so something has been “said.” Also, different team.
Thanks, as a Brewer fan I was wondering who those guy were.
Thanks, Daniel, that was brilliant. Your contribution is much appreciated.
Pat Murphy said he was really excited about how much depth they had, seems like that is really going to be put to the test this year.
As a red sox fan on the outside looking in..Just hope Hamilton isn’t being counted on as an everyday answer that’s what happened in Boston and as you can see by the stats he gets exposed pretty fast
Aren’t you gonna be mad when Hamilton ends up better than durbin just straight up… and we got harrison.
The Red Sox would tend to give Hamilton several starts in a row. Then he would barely play for a week. It’s like they didn’t have a plan for him. I only know because I had him on a couple of weekly-lineup fantasy teams last year. It seemed like every time he played good for a stretch he’d be back on the bench for a week.
Why would that make me mad? I really hope both harrison and Hamilton turn into all stars for you..the fact you think one or both will be better than durbin straight up just tells me you or the brewers hope to swindle other teams at every turn and maybe your players are not as good as you make them out to be when selling…let me tell you if you sell people enough lemons soon enough they stop buying your bs
From the Brewers’ end, they appreciate what Durbin and Isaac Collins contributed to their 97-win season as rookies, but they wanted to move both to make room for Garrett Mitchell in the outfield and more of a slugger at third base. Durbin had little chance of surviving the wave of elite infield talent in the high minors, so Matt Arnold found him a more permanent home while improving the pitching staff.
Straight up.. Hamilton will be way better than Durbin at third.
Nobody ever questioned Hamilton’s defense..its the sub 200 batting average and well below league avg obp that were troubling And made him a pinch runner and defensive replacement in boston.
Also let’s not forget the brewers traded him for Travis shaw to begin with..if he was so great why deal him in the first place?..btw how’s shaw doing ?
Think Durbin is gonna be a stud, especially with so many games at Fenway, so definitely not on board with Hamilton>Durbin. The Shaw trade was a different era/GM though, and they definitely value the speed and defense Hamilton provides more highly than they did in the pre shift ban days when they were rolling Shaw out at 2nd.
Id be beyond shocked if Hamilton is ever even just regular bad against lefties, AMFAM does fit him better though, and the Brewers are very good at improving swing decisions, so I could see him improving his wrc+ against RH 15ish points. That version of Hamilton platooning with Rengifo gets them to around the production Durbin gave em last year.
Also most Brewer fans love Durbin, and are rooting for him to do well.
Hamilton said the Brewers’ style of baseball is a better fit for him, and he responded well to Pat Murphy’s directive to get on base any way you can. He made an immediate impact in the season opener by getting on base via catcher’s interference. He won’t be playing every day but certainly more than Andruw Monasterio did.
Any chance William sees time at 1B? As a way to keep the bat in the lineup and give him a break from catching?
One of the Catchers is playing 1B against lefties. Im excited to see if the new and improved Bauers is real, but they arent letting him face many LH regardless.
The only reason to call up Quero that I can see is because either Bil or Gary is forming a weak side platoon at 1B w Bauers.
White Sox have a lefty on the mound today, so guess well find out shortly.
Jake Bauers is rake’n.
Brewers have made a lot of good trades.
Bauers, Vaughn, Contreras, Hamilton, Ortiz — all in the starting lineup.
Patrick, Harrison, Sproat in the opening day rotation. Got Priester on the IR.
MeGill, Zerpa, Hall, Anderson, Woodford in the bullpen. Half of their active roster acquired in trades.
Drohan a good prospect. Got Jett Williams too.
135M luxury tax payroll. Stacked farm. Chourio deal looks like a super bargain. Brewers have been baseball’s best.
best at what exactly?
I got one thumb’s up and an inquisition. Not so bad for a Saturday.
Baseball’s best FO.
No ABS in ’27 has Homervision.
It’s already been 1 whole game and 2 brewer starters are out for at least a few weeks! I can’t wait to see what April and May brings for other brewer starters!!
Waste. Dude needs to play everyday and won’t get the playing time in the majors needed.
I’m not seeing how those hitting numbers made him a top 40 prospect, so he must have a good glove.
He had an elite level arm, but that was before he hurt his throwing shoulder two years ago.
Hes an elite defender for his age, though there are questions about his arm due to surgery now. His 262/339/440 in 2023 may not seem overly impressive, but it was actually 5% better than league average because the Southern League isnt a great hitting environment.
A 20 year old catcher in AA, with a 60 on his defense hitting 5% better than league average with solid pop, and top tier contact numbers(85% in zone contact then, and has still never ran a K% over 20%) is pretty easy to defend in the top 40 imo.
In 2023, before he hurt his shoulder, in 74 games he threw out 35% of attempted stolen bases. Last year in the majors, only 2 catchers who played more than 40 games had a better rate. In 2025, in 42 games, he threw out 17%, which is below the 22% MLB average. He was 8% in winter league. He’s 0 for 2 this season.
That arm is a MAJOR red flag.
Hence my “there are questions about his arm now” He also isnt 20, my last paragraph is about when he was 20, and a top 40 prospect, hes slid down to the back end of most top 100 lists now
“Questions about his arm now.” There’s no question that without that elite arm, he doesn’t hit enough to be a major league level catcher. A glove first backup? Maybe. But not a starter.
Thats delusional, hes still towards the back end of top 100’s. You may not think hell hit, but thats far from consensus.
If you are that sure about your opinions on guys, especially guys that the industry is higher on, you clearly dont know enough for your opinion to be worth anything.
At least I’m not such a total dillhole that I think anyone that doesn’t agree with me “doesn’t know enough for (their) opinion to be worth anything.” That’s the kind of thinking only a complete POS has. Congrats! You’re a complete douchebag.
