The Red Sox announced today (as relayed by Chris Cotillo of MassLive, among others) that they’ve sent right-hander Patrick Galle to the Cardinals to complete their trade for veteran righty Sonny Gray from this past offseason. Galle joins right-handers Richard Fitts and Brandon Clarke to make up the complete return for Gray. The Cardinals subsequently announced that Galle has been assigned to Single-A Palm Beach.
Galle, who celebrated his 22nd birthday yesterday, joins the Cardinals organization after spending less than a year in the Red Sox organization. A 17th-round pick by the club during last year’s draft, Galle pitched just 11 innings in relief during his two years with the University of Mississippi during college. He’s spent his entire professional career to this point at the Single-A level, and he’s pitched to a 4.91 ERA in 7 1/3 innings of work. He’s posted a strikeout rate of just 11.4% with a 20% walk rate. Those are lackluster numbers to be sure, and at 22 years old it’s an open question if Galle will ever develop enough to make it to the majors. With that being said, the righty hasn’t spent much time in professional ball at this point, and it’s possible that getting into a new organization that has pivoted to have such a strong focus on player development could be just what Galle needs to take a big step forward.
The deal completes a trade for Gray that helped to patch up a Red Sox rotation that was not only losing Lucas Giolito to free agency but had too often proven inconsistent in 2025 outside of staff ace Garrett Crochet. Gray’s numbers with Boston don’t exactly jump off the page through two starts, with a 4.50 ERA and 19% strikeout rate in ten unremarkable innings. The veteran’s track record as a consistent and durable above-average arm suggests that he’ll be a productive asset for the Red Sox this year, however, as long as he remains in good health. Turning to the Cardinals, Clarke has not yet made his organizational debut but Fitts has a very impressive 1.74 ERA across two outings for Triple-A Memphis so far this season.

The trades the Sox made for guys at the end of their career is going great…
Gray has pitched 10 innings for the Red Sox and he has a 1.10 WHIP.
Why are you such a reactionary scrub?
Hope he does well but realistically, expect you to still be wrong about him and Contreras at years end
Eh feel better about Sonny than I do Ranger
Sean – Strongly disagree on this one. Ranger will have a better season, he just needs to get up to speed because of Cora’s ST mismanagement.
Oh I was only referring to these first two starts. Not seeing the elite command and control I was hoping for out of the gate. I’m not anywhere near giving up on either.
And Cora is driving me nuts wayyyy too early in the season, AGAIN! The Uberstine debacle made me want to scream into pillows (Easter, kids present). You got 2 great innings out of the kid and tied the game up!!! 😡 😤
Sean – Yeah I expected a 3rd inning unfortunately. He’s probably gonna be sent down today with Whit returning, Cora likes to lean heavily on pitchers who won’t be with the team the next day.
Hope you had a happy Easter! The Sox offense also rose from the dead, although Peralta and Buehler aren’t exactly quality pitchers. LOL
Suarez is a slightly above average major league starter. I’ve never understood the hype around him. Maybe it’s because he’s done well in the postseason. Gray is a clearly better pitcher.
Same to you good sir 🫡
I dunno. When he’s on he paints the corners like few can do. Plus being a heavy GB pitcher traditionally I thought the signing has a lot of promise. Old school pitcher in many ways
Sean – We have a serious, serious problem. That was the worst throw I’ve seen on a shallow fly to LF at Fenway in my lifetime. At this point, he HAS to DH until he gets his throwing issues resolved. Unreal.
Fever- We were supposed to win games this year with our pitching and defense. Both have been a major disappointment. When we finally score some runs and still can’t win because our area of strength is turning out to be our weakness it does not bode well for the season. Not giving up yet, but they need to get things figured out soon.
I don’t even understand what is going on in LF right now?!! His arm was never Wilyers but it also was never Damon’s… 😱
It’s like a combination of tennis elbow, the yips, and just a complete brain fart on the fundamentals of how to throw a baseball. From the ground up something is going on. Seen him air mail one, roll one thru the infield from shallow left, spike one, and look about as awkward as he can possibly look throwing a ball all in the same week.
Uncle – It’s their system. They emphasize and value the wrong things.
Think about it, what are the things they keep pushing on the players?
The hitters, it’s all about swinging as hard as you can with as high a launch angle as you can.
The pitchers, it’s all about max velo and swing & miss. The team really pushes and celebrates 100MPH or close to it.
But what happens when your hitters are always swinging as hard as they can? Less contact, more strikeouts.
What happens when your pitchers are always throwing as hard as possible instead of pitching to contact? Less command, more walks, higher pitch counts.
Bello last night is a perfect example. You got people like Merloni saying Bello pitched great because he had 17 swings & misses, but he racked up 4 walks and 86 pitches in 3 1/3 innings.
The Red Sox worst innings all season have been 4-6, because that’s when starting pitchers are losing it and the middle relievers haven’t been effective.
I’m not giving up either because other WC contenders like the Jays and O’s are playing bad too, but they really need to make changes. Abreu is not gonna stay this hot all season and injuries will happen.
They’ve got two weeks to get their act together before they start playing a ton of divisional games.
Sean – With Damon and Ellsbury they just didn’t have arm strength, but at least their throws were relatively accurate.
I think with Roman he’s basically become the outfield version of Chuck Knoblauch, it’s probably more mental and mechanical than anything.
But he cannot play in the field every day, teams are gonna continue to run on him if he does. When facing RHP, they have to play Yoshida in LF and Roman at DH.
What a crazy, crazy situation that has developed.
Sean – He’s not only getting the ball to the plate, he can’t even hit the cutoff guy.
Concerning to say the least.
Cora didn’t have full control over Ranger’s spring training as he was away at the the World Baseball Classic.
True. WBC hangovers across the league as well
All- Ranger’s performance in the WBC was not impressive either. You wonder if something like the turmoil going on in his home country impacted his offseason workouts or if he has a minor injury he is playing through. I was not familiar with him at all before the Sox signed him, but his stats would indicate he should be a solid addition to the rotation. Hopefully he gets it figured out soon, we really need him to do well if we are going to get back into the pennant race.
Uncle: Bello left the WBC and returned to spring training because he wasn’t getting enough work in. I am guessing the same was true for Ranger. I think he did look better in his last start.
Gray has been great so far
Shouldve gone for Pat Strait
Gray is off to a slow start as usual. He is going to be a good addition to the team. Watch and see.
Not slow at all. Pitching great
Unmitigated.
Can they send the Cardinals Sonny Gray at the PTBNL in the Sonny Gray trade?
winos – I like your thinking!
Yeah, send back their second best starter.
Hank – Nobody mentioned Bello.
Some how I believe Greg Weissert is the new… hurts to much to say….
olm – Please don’t bring up John Way Back Wasdin ….. I’m still scarred from those days …..
Lol!!! I wonder in my full figure friend’ EL Guapo is on ozempic too🤔
The Sox are getting cooked thus far, Sonny-side up
Fried – Sonny is definitely NOT a Delight.
What do you want from the guy? He beat a good Padres team and only allowed 2 runs.
Hank – It was a pun, there’s a hugely popular beverage called Sunny Delight ;O)
But to answer your question, I want better than a 4.50 ERA for a guy making $40M this year.
And the Padres offense was among the worst in MLB when they came to Boston.
Fair enough
The fact this article is comparing the minor league stats of Fitts and Gray is hilarious.
They’ve both pitched 10 innings. Gray’s WHIP is lower than Fitts in those 10 innings. Yet Fitts has been “very impressive” while Grey has been “unremarkable”
Top notch research and reporting.
Nick Deeds special
Hey, at least they’re not Carlos Santana. His slash line after 26 plate appearances was called “dismal” yesterday. Don’t have a bad week, apparently.
Ghost- I took it more as an update on the players involved in the trade. He also talked about Gray’s track record and expectations that he will be an asset to the club. Fitts does have an impressive ERA in the minors, but Deeds knows that is meaningless if it doesn’t transfer to the majors. I did not take it as saying they did better in the trade or being a direct comparison of the players. I am hoping that both Sonny and Ranger will improve, but the season is certainly off to a disappointing start.
The guy with the lower WHIP is in the majors, and he’s pitching is “unremarkable”
The guy in the minors has a higher WHIP and his pitching is “very impressive”
It’s lazy and hyperbolic.
He was likely just focusing on the ERA. A 4.50 ERA and 19% strikeout rate is unremarkable. Most pitching performances are unremarkable. Probably not the right word because to be remarkable you need to be doing something like pitching a complete game shutout. Fitts ERA of 1.72 was very impressive that doesn’t mean everything about his performance was. I understand what you are saying, I just did not take the description the same way.
P. Galle, P. Galle das ist die grosse Mausefalle

That trade was over four months ago. The Cardinals forgot they were supposed to get another player and the Red Sox just weren’t gonna say anything.
you know who the red sox could use? kyle harrison and james tibbs
Babe Ruth too?
I never seen fans so excited they traded a #3 starter for another teams leftover utility player scraps. Sox fans wanted absolutely nothing to do with Harrison.
Jay Tibbs would also be an improvement.
they call him mister tibbs!
I’m not completely panicked yet. The talent on the team should be enough for a wild card team. Which I hate to say because that shouldn’t be the goal, but this is the world we live in.
The SP will round into form, and the backend of the bullpen is solid.
My problem is with Kennedy, Breslow and Cora’s analytical lineup mismanagement, poor defense (STILL!) and an overall lack of baseball acumen which leaves the team looking uninspired.
Its five years of this! Whats the constant during that time?
Sad- On paper our defense looks like it should be a strength. I don’t know what is going on with Story, he is becoming an error machine. It is probably time to question whether he is capable of fielding that position, maybe he needs to move to second.
Uncle – I agree, it should be. But, watching Durbin and Story on the left side of the infield is painful. Team total 11 errors, 2nd most in mlb.
I will say that Contreras has been better than I thought.
Gosh darn! Thought we were going to send a reliever named Craig Breslow as PTBNL. Oh well…one can dream
Someone please fire Breslow and have John Henry sell the team
Breslow is awesome. Not only did he build the Sox rotation but the Braves and Brewers as well.
