Adalberto Mondesi Diagnosed With Shoulder Subluxation

By Jeff Todd | July 17, 2019 at 3:08pm CDT

The Royals announced today that budding star shortstop Adalberto Mondesi has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder subluxation. It’s not surprising to hear of the IL placement, but the diagnosis represents a potentially worrying turn to the situation.

The club has not yet given indication as to the course of treatment or anticipated timeline for Mondesi’s return. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by infielder Humberto Arteaga. Just-acquired lefty Mike Montgomery is also coming to the majors, with righty Jake Newberry optioned to make way.

We won’t know more until the team elects to disclose further information, but it is worth noting that shoulder subluxations can be rather significant injuries for position players. In recent years, players such as Marco Hernandez, Guillermo Heredia, and Jesse Winker have required surgery for injuries falling under that category. In Winker’s case, he was declared out for the remainder of the season following a late-July procedure but was able to get back to health for the start of the ensuing campaign.

Regardless of the particular outlook for Mondesi, the club’s unfavorable postseason outlook won’t be altered. But he’s one of the Royals’ chief ballpark draws and it’d certainly be preferable to keep him on the field and gaining further experience against MLB pitching. Mondesi hasn’t quite followed up on his strong output from 2018. Through 335 plate appearances this year, he’s slashing .266/.294/.433 with seven home runs but carries a suboptimal combination of 16 walks and 101 strikeouts.

If Mondesi can find a way to improve in the plate-discipline department and get that OBP heading north, he’d have even greater opportunity to put his exceptional legs to work on the basepaths. As it stands, he already leads the league with 31 swipes. This injury will limit Mondesi’s reps at the plate in 2019, robbing him of some opportunity for further development.

Was gruesome to watch live and my immediate reaction was if he plays another game in 2019, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

This means it didn’t actually dislocate. The question is whether any damage was done to the labrum/rotator cuff etc.

From my understanding, the more likely issue is with the ligaments and tendons. The labrum and rotator cuff are unlikely to have been damaged. Partially coming out of a socket means something stretched. Every time something dislocates, it becomes more likely to happen again.

Even the minor surgery required to tighten things up (if necessary in a worst case scenario) would end his season at this point.

Having gone through dislocations and subluxations a couple dozen times, I can tell you that there will be some labrum damage, as well as capsular joint damage.

Sounds like you need to stop what you are doing to keep getting so many dislocations and subluxations. How do you even move after that many?

I’ve had 7 surgeries—3 arthroscopic and 4 reconstructive. It got to the point where, if I tried raising my arm, it would dislocate. The final surgery, the surgeon cut the entire shoulder joint, turned it inwards, then put it back together with titanium clips/staples.
I have zero external motion, but at least it doesn’t dislocate anymore.

Wrong. Subluxation generally means labrum tear.

I believe it means that there’s weakness in the labrum, not necessarily a tear.
The weakness is a factor in causing subluxations.

I myself have had two shoulder reconstructions and just discovered I tore my RC a third time. Major Dislocations can occur from simple movementYou don’t have to be throwing a javelin.

My problem is with Mondesi’s judgement; why did he dive for that ball and risk injury when we were ahead 6-0?

Because he’s a professional baseball player that loves playing the game. He thought he could catch it, so he went for it. Baseball would be much better off if it had more players like him.

Because he still has his teammates to play for. A true leader does not give up on his teammates regardless of the score, even in a lost season.

Some players are more concerned about making the highlight reel than anything

Dude gets badly injured attempting to his job and it’s because “he wants to make the highlight reel”? Rrrrright.

I’d argue that no Royals “want to make the highlight reel” — doesn’t strike me as a motivating factor in that clubhouse on a Ned Yost-coached team, but hey, maybe you have a finger on the pulse.

Exactly, How many seconds did the guy have to decide if it was a highlight reel play and that he should dive for it? It is instinct. Same reason guys get hurt in preseason NFL games. or in practice. They are wired to just make the play so they try to make it.

Mondi gets his strikeouts in spurts, he’s never going to be a guy who gets a lot of walks, but when he’s hitting well he’s one of the best in the game. 2.2 WAR in half a season for a 23 y/o is nothing to shake a stick at. If he improves his consistency and improves his pitch selection, he’s going to be a superstar.

Not that I don’t like Humberto Arteaga But I don’t understand why they can’t let nicky Lopez Play shortstop, whit Merrifield play second And Then call up another outfielder to play right field. that way Jorge Soler will DH. But my idea is using common sense

Look at the lineup dude, Lopez is playing SS, Whit playing second. Arteaga is because Lopez is the only guy on the roster who can play SS. Did you have someone else you think they should’ve called up.?

I guess you do have a good point there. I just thought it made more sense bringing up an outfielder . If we can convince someone to take Billy Hamilton, then we’ll see Bonifacio or Phillips.

As much of a bummer having mondesi be out. At least they have an actual interesting young guy to step in. See what kind of back up he may be next season. Way better than the clown show the system was 15 years ago. Plus I bet 2Hit does play some 2nd base going forward.

Why don’t you like Humberto Arteaga? It looks like the Royals are making him a IF sub type player.

I think Nicky Lopez only plays shortstop a few times as they’ll probably have Arteaga play shortstop more, especially if mondesi is out for a few weeks. Humberto has already been up this year. in fact I missed his first major-league hit because I was out of town and unable to watch it because I was at a wedding when he got it .

Astros took the HBP old school style, which I admire. Eye for an eye, let’s move on.
They have a postseason to worry about too and not this thing. Their refusal to engage was probably why they got suspended. Pujols should let them chirp a little bit and move on. Should get suspended for inciting, by coming towards the dugout, If MLB followed the NBA, you leave the bench you get suspended. People would stay in the dugout/bullpen.
