Yankees Acquire Terrance Gore

By Jeff Todd | July 17, 2019 at 2:52pm CDT

The Yankees announced today that they have acquired speedy outfielder Terrance Gore from the Royals. The deal sends cash considerations back to Kansas City.

Gore will not land on the New York 40-man, per the announcement. It seems that the deal was struck after he cleared waivers. Gore was designated for assignment recently.

The 28-year-old will open his tenure with the Yanks at Triple-A. No doubt he’ll wait there until the club has a need for a stolen-base threat and defensive specialist.

Gore, who swiped 13 bags this year in 37 games, will make for an intriguing potential postseason roster weapon for the Yanks. The fleet-footed baserunning expert has appeared in nine playoff games, logging five steals, despite taking just 19 total regular-season MLB plate appearances before the current season.

Nice. Speed is very important and with Terrance Gore he will be able to steal a lot of bases.

If the Yankees are healthy for the playoffs, does he make the roster? Solid move with their injuries so far but if the team is healthy, are they taking Gardy’s spot? No.

        • pjc1966

In post season they carry less pitchers, so there are more bench spots. It’s common to carry a speed guy for pinch running duties. I would think Maybin would take on that role, but I guess they want to see how his leg is healed before deciding on that.

        • Cuso

Meh, Maybin still has some speed, but he’s not a prototypical pinch-runner anymore. He’s probably not even your first choice to pinch-run without Gore. He did, after all, get hurt running the bases.

Yeah but they’ll just wait until it’s close enough to the postseason, then put him on the active roster so they can utilize him in October – then it’s the off-season so they’d lose/re-sign him then anyway.

With Jeff here: this has nothing to do with anything. They just have to add him to the 40-man before September. There will be no need to option him.

Yeah but he already cleared waivers so that doesn’t matter. They will add him to the 40 man roster and call him up September 1st.

With the impending roster reduction next September I wonder if guys like Gore will have jobs at the major league level

If you happen to be referencing losing free agents to the Yankees….

Since 2000 the Yankees have been able to pry away:

      Buddy Carlyle – 12/23/2003

      Mike Kelly – 2/3/2004

      Doug Mientkiewicz – 1/8/2007

      Brian Anderson – 11/27/2010

      Billy Burns – 1/3/2019

      Sorry, try again next time.

Probably referencing the old KC A’s. Back then, a person could own multiple teams. There where many trades between the two teams that were more than lopsided. The A’s were essentially the Yankees farm team and it’s a big reason they dominated for so long.

A player has three options. Only one can be used per season, and once it’s used, the player can be optioned as frequently as needed.

Clint Frazier has been optioned by the Yankees on six different occasions, but only in two seasons, so he has one option left. Whether the Yankees leave him in AAA the rest of the year or call him up and option him back down four more times this season, he’d still have one more option left.

Not sure how a guy will literally do nothing but pinch-run and MAYBE get a plate appearance or two (if he’s ever called up at all) will end up being the “best trade deadline pickup”.

There are pitchers that have better batting averages than Billy Hamilton. There are a couple teams that have several pitchers better than him at hitting. All he brings is speed, which he can’t even use on offense.

Gore brings a .275 batting average, and relatively solid defense. Hamilton is sitting at .216, and has never shown any ability to hit. Defending is great and all, but what does it matter if you can’t help your team produce runs? I’m not saying Terrance Gore is an all-star, but if you’re comparing the two, contracts included, I would certainly pick Gore over Hamilton. Easy decision
