Brad Brach Elects Free Agency

By Connor Byrne | April 26, 2021 at 4:12pm CDT

Veteran reliever Brad Brach has cleared outright waivers and elected free agency, Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star reports. The Royals designated Brach for assignment on Saturday.

Brach had a short stay on the Royals’ roster, as the team designated him just one day after selecting his contract. The 35-year-old right-hander joined the Royals on a minor league contract over the winter, which came after the Mets designated him.

Brach has seen major league action with five teams since he debuted with the Padres in 2011, and he has enjoyed a solid career. Through 522 2/3 innings, Brach has registered a 3.39 ERA/3.78 SIERA with a 25.1 percent strikeout rate and an 11.1 percent walk rate. Unfortunately, though, Brach’s production has gone downhill dating back to 2019. Between the Cubs and Mets over the previous two seasons, he tossed 66 2/3 frames of 5.66 ERA ball (with a more palatable 4.91 SIERA) and logged a 24.7 percent strikeout rate against a 15.0 percent walk rate. While Brach has normally averaged around 94 mph on his fastball, that number dipped to a personal-worst 90.4 last year.

Being an ex Brave, I wouldn’t be shocked at another AA ex Brave reclamation project aka Biddle.

The Brad Brach/ Darren O Day rubber arm types were born 10 years too early too ever get payed anything close to their worth

Unfortunately, nowadays they hardly exist because all pitchers are going max velo/effort and cant handle as much bulk inns/appearances

Yusmeiro Petit is a modern day badazz….how 29 other teams don’t call him offering him more shocks me every year… Hes on my All Bargain List every year it seems . Chad Green will be an interesting case study after next year in the market to see if these soldiers finally get their well deserved bread at the table .

I get what you’re saying, but O’Day has had $50 million in contracts in his career. That’s a ton for a middle reliever.

True over longevity tho, which is certainly admirable.

But I can honestly say Id pay 50 mill nowadays if you gave me half his early career banked

Yeah, for sure. If O’Day were ten years younger, he could probably snag a multi year deal in the $40-50 million range alone.

Petit has been a beast and very underrated his whole career because nothing in his stats pops out except how good of an Era he has had for his career workload.

Yea kinda my further illustration too

I think if there’s one department MLB can get better at these days its bullpen evaluation. They seem a little too enamored with velo

Give me Petit 8 days a week ….I DO think their will be a correction tho shortly and the bagel boys will get their money on the market , unfortunately for Brach it was just too late. Real solid stretch in Baltimore for him.

Like they always say, there’s no better ability than availability

Give the Braves a guy that can come in and consistently throw strikes and get ground ball outs. Velo don’t mean jack if you walk a ton of batters. MLB hitters have been groomed and adjusted to high velo because almost everyone throws 95 plus theses days. A guy like Tom Glavine wouldn’t even get a long look in today’s game.

Tom Glavine ~ Minors made me think of Steve Avery’s Minor league bonanza hype

Man, for all the pressure and hype and having to take the ball after those (older HOF) dudes and being expected to contribute right out the gate (at like 20?) to pennants and playoffs?!!? ……Steve Avery did a pretty fantastic job
