Kendall Graveman Diagnosed With Bone Tumor In Cervical Spine

By Connor Byrne | August 17, 2020 at 3:18pm CDT

Mariners right-hander Kendall Graveman has been diagnosed with a bone tumor in the C6 part of his cervical spine, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

Fortunately, Graveman’s tumor is benign and won’t grow or worsen if he continues to pitch, per Divish. And while Graveman may undergo surgery to address it at some point, that procedure won’t take place “until down the road,” Divish writes. It seems Graveman will even pitch again this year, as his hope is to make one more rehab start in an intraquad game before he’s ready for a return, according to Divish.

Graveman, whom the Mariners signed to a one-year, $1.5MM contract last winter, made two appearances for the club this season before landing on the injured list Aug. 4 with what the team described as neck spasms. The 29-year-old was successful member of the A’s staff from 2015-17, but Tommy John surgery limited him in 2018 and kept him out of action entirely last season.

I have no idea what that is, but I still cringed. That is terrible news.

Since it is benign it is a straight forward procedure. It is interesting neck surgery they usually go in from the front. Most of the cervical spine is easier to access that way. I would guess this would not allow him to throw for 6 months.

My surgery I had to wear a neck brace for 4 months. First 2 could only take it off to shower or lay down for a few mins. Had to sleep with it even last 2 could take it off to sleep and shower but nothing else. After that you need to strengthen it back up.

I’m glad they found it. Be well.

This is another reason why not breaking protocol is a big deal. There are people who are vulnerable who don’t even know they are sick.

He’s not vulnerable. It’s a benign tumor on the bone….that doesn’t make him any more at risk lol

Seems to me that his point was that someone could unknowingly have something going on in their body. But hey, you’re clearly the one with an agenda.

I do have an agenda. People who are not at risk spread this to people who at risk and those people die. Also there are people at risk who don’t even know they are at risk.

          The truth is my agenda.

There is not a lot of balance on either side of this issue. I get attacked from both sides, and since there isn’t a lot of balance, I feel good where I’m at.

No. They don’t die. 170,000 may sound like a lot of deaths, but it’s been 6 months since this started. Time to look at the big picture and realize that you’ve been lied to. There’s no million death doomsday coming from coronavirus like there was with H1N1.

I had this exact same thing! He can probably get better medical care than I did but if his experience is similar it could definitely be career ending.

I have this same thing. I chose to not have it dealt with surgically, because it’s really not necessary. Painful on occasion, though.

His may be creating more pain for him than yours too (that’s only a statement, not a judgment about yours). Either way, I feel bad for anyone with back/neck pain or injuries.

Agreed. The constant movement from throwing is most likely increasing his pain.

I have a benign tumor on my right humerus. It was found during a chest x-ray looking for pneumonia. Scariest few weeks of my life as I awaited my diagnosis.
