MacKenzie Gore Tentatively Slated For September Return

By Mark Polishuk | July 31, 2022 at 8:44am CDT

Padres left-hander MacKenzie Gore was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to inflammation in his throwing elbow, and as a result he “won’t throw…for a couple of weeks,” manager Bob Melvin told Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune and other reporters.  “Structurally, everything looked pretty good in there compared to the past.  Low-grade strain, and I think we caught a break as far as that goes.”

However, it is also possible we’ve seen the last of Gore in 2022, as Acee hears from two sources that the Padres could shut Gore down entirely, rather than risk more serious injury by bringing him back too early.  Melvin acknowledged the uncertainty of Gore’s status, saying “I don’t know what the reality is as far as him pitching….If everything went smoothly, there’s a chance he could show up at some point in time in September.”

Though Gore has been considered one of baseball’s best pitching prospects basically ever since the Padres drafted him third overall in 2017, questions began to surface when Gore ran into some major mechanics issues in 2020, necessitating a big overhaul and a trip back down the minor league ladder in 2021.  He got back on track enough to make his MLB debut this season, with Gore posting a 4.50 ERA and 23.3% strikeout rate over 70 innings, starting 13 of 16 games.

The Statcast numbers weren’t too favorable to Gore’s work, as his walk and hard-contact rates were among the league’s worst.  Much of that damage came over his last seven outings — Gore has an 11.05 ERA in his last 22 innings, as opposed to a sterling 1.50 mark in his first 48 frames of work.  Due to both his recent struggles and as a way of conserving his innings, Gore had been working out of the bullpen for his last two appearances, without much success.

With this in mind, it wasn’t clear how big of a role Gore would have for the Padres down the stretch, though losing part of their pitching depth entirely to the IL obviously isn’t an ideal situation.  San Diego can only hope that Gore recovers well and is able to make it back and put himself in the conversation for the postseason roster.

On paper, San Diego has more depth than most teams, as the Padres were operating with a six-man rotation for a good chunk of the season, and Nick Martinez could possibly be stretched back out as a starter.  But, with Gore a question mark, it is also easy to see why the Padres have been linked to starting pitching in deadline rumors, with San Diego reportedly checking in on such names as Frankie Montas, Shohei Ohtani, and (before he was traded to the Mariners) Luis Castillo.

Gore is pure hype, with potential. Tough call putting him in the September fire, if he’s unable to go now.

The bullpen let yet another game slip away yesterday. The adage is “you can never have enough pitching “ , that includes RP, and right now the Padres have no one to hold down the late innings. Unless Montas and Ohtani can convert to RP for rest of 2022, I’d lay off.

Yeah padres definitely need relief pitching

Andrew Chafin or Matt Moore would be good gets for some LHP depth

From the right side Mychal Givens Jorge Lopez Anthony Bass would be good gets.

In an ideal world Padres would
Make a trade for the cubs for Ian Happ and Mychal Givens. Soto would be amazing but price is steep. Happ would be a good fall back option plus get some RP.

      Bring in Chafin or Moore

Bring in Michael A Taylor for a RH platoon OF bat

Tigers Soto + Fullmer would be just what the doctor ordered for my Pads Bullpen

I know we get Pomz/Johnson/Suarez and Adams back at some point ..but with 60 left need relief pitching NOW!

Pomz/Johnson/Suarez/Adams were due back in June but the waiting continues. Frustrating. If Manaea gets bombed again today (teams are hitting 340 against him in last 5 starts), word has it he might get a Taylor Rogers-like time-out, meaning we lose Martinez from RP as he goes back to temporary SP role.

And who knows if Pomz/Johnson/Suarez/Adams can be effective when/if they return from long layoffs.

He looks like a basic case of startling hot then the league figured him out. His injury has all the indications of a TJ candidate. Mostly the front office pussyfooting around and acting like if they say he doesn’t need surgery enough times he will be healed.

His velo dropped 3 mph, so it wasn’t just the league catching up.

Seems like fatigue more than anything. He’s only ever pitched more than 100 innings once. 70 plus 5 down in aaa innings is third highest total in his career.

Although, with AJ Preller, he likes to acquire already-injured players. Gore is an enigma… It is highly likely that, before Gore recovers, AJ will sign him to a 10-year, $550M extension with player options on the 9th and 10th years. That’s the AJ way!

I remember years ago I watched Gore in spring training for a batter or so and said he wasn’t that great a prospect and that he would just get shelled. Casuals went bananas on me

Here he sits with an 84 ERA+. If his astronomical 4.8 BB\9 ever goes down then it just means H/9 and HR/9 will skyrocket

Pulling up a few random videos on baseballsavant from this year it looks just as bad. Really flat stuff, low perceived velo, easy to barrel up and tee off on

It’s just that we’re so tired of hearing it….

Hunter Renfroe, Austin Hedges, Taylor Trammell, Logan Allen, Manuel Margot, Michel Baez, Franmil Reyes, Franchy Cordero, Luis Patiño, Austin Allen, Josh Naylor, Luis Campusano, Chris Paddack, Cal Quantrill, Luis Urias, Joey Lucchesi, MacKenzie Gore, etc. – all can’t miss stars and superstars….

And now who wouldn’t give up their best players if only the Padres would agree to trade imminent superstars: MacKenzie Gore, Luis Campusano, Robert Hassell III, C.J. Abrams, James Wood, Jackson Merrill, Eguy Rosario, etc.

Maybe they can trade for Jarred Kelenic – none of their OF’s can hit, he’ll fit right in.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Could add Tatis to the list too, considering he has spent about the same time on the IL than he has on the field.

Pitchers are injury risks and get injured all the time. No reason for any team to proactively trade for an injured pitcher like Gore. All this hype about the Padres and Gore has been mediocre to bad or injured. Abrams has been overmatched to date. Morejon’s numbers are bad. It seems like any Padres package comes with way too much risk to surrender a top tier talent for him…

@ Jersey. It’s true 21 year-old Abrams was a bit overmatched when first brought up, couldn’t buy a hit. The last month however he’s hitting .333 and with a BABIP of 350, so he seems to be catching on quickly. He’s hit at every level and nothing has changed in his projectory to become a fine MLB middle IF, maybe a star. Every GM would covet him.

As for Morejon. You say his numbers are bad, but he’s only pitched 9 innings this year in relief and has looked unhittable in every outing but one. He’s 23 and recovering from TJS. Hardly time to write him off.

All his statcast data is rock bottom right now. Nothing is ever going to magically change with Gore

And spare me the “he’s only 23 he’s still young and figuring it out” takes. He’s never going to be good

Obviously the Padres are giving Nats fans the chance to say goodbye to Soto today since he’s in the starting line up today for the final time in his Washington career.

Gore has an 8th percentile chase rate. That tells you all you need to know. The ball is easy to pick up and easy to lay off

Hard Hit% and Avg Exit Velo is 7th percentile. Not just bad, but near rock bottom in the entire league. They’re teeing off on everything like it’s batting practice

And all this result is easily abducted just from watching him pitch to a couple batters in spring training years ago

I remember when Max Freid got traded for Justin Upton while recouping from TJ when new ownership told rookie GM AJP to go All in (ill adviced) in 2015… please don’t trade Gore..Lauer/Freid/Quantrill/Eflin say hello

Gore will get someone fired. It would be difficult to have pitched any better in his first 8 starts, and difficult to have pitched much worse in his last 7 games. Was the discrepancy due to injury or scouting?

That said, when someone pitches as badly as he did in his last 4 starts, the move should be to the minors and not the BP.

@ JoeBrady. Great take. They should have dropped him back to minors (he’s still very young after all) to work on his mechanics and get some rest, but the lure to solve the bullpen woes was too great apparently.
