Rangers Sign Aaron Heilman

The Rangers have signed right-hander Aaron Heilman to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A, reports Anthony Andro of FOXSportsSouthwest.com (on Twitter). The Mariners released the Frontline Sports client over the weekend.

Heilman spent the first half of the 2011 campaign with the Diamondbacks, who released him in July after he posted a 6.88 ERA with 8.4 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 28.5% ground ball rate in 35 1/3 innings. He later signed minor league deals with the Phillies and Pirates, but didn't pitch at the Major League level after July 15th. One fifth of fly balls against him left the yard in 2011, a major reason for his unsightly ERA.

Mariners Release Aaron Heilman

The Mariners have released Aaron Heilman from their minor league camp, according to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times (on Twitter).

Heilman, 33, signed a minor league deal with the Mariners this past January after posting a 6.88 ERA, 8.4 K/9, and 2.8 BB/9 in 35 1/3 innings for the Diamondbacks last season. He struggled to keep the ball on the ground, with a 38.5% groundball rate, which resulted in a whopping eight homers allowed.

The FrontLine Sports client has a career 4.40 ERA, 7.8 K/9, 3.7 BB/9, and 43.1% groundball rate in 630 innings as both a starter and reliever for the Mets, Cubs, and Diamondbacks.

Mariners Sign Aaron Heilman

The Mariners have signed Aaron Heilman to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training, the team announced. Frontline represents the 33-year-old right-hander. ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick first reported the move on Twitter.

Though Heilman has never suited up for the Mariners in his nine-year career, he was involved in the three-way trade between the Mets, Mariners and Indians that took place three offseasons ago. The Mariners acquired him from the Mets in December of 2008 and flipped him to the Cubs for Ronny Cedeno and Garrett Olson the next month.

Safeco Field should limit the number of home runs Heilman surrenders in 2012. One fifth of fly balls against him left the yard in 2011, a major reason for his unsightly ERA. It's hard to argue with Jack Zduriencik's low-risk gamble on a durable pitcher who could see his numbers improve in Seattle.

Pirates Sign Aaron Heilman

Aaron Heilman's free agency stint didn't last long. After being released by the Phillies yesterday, the veteran right-hander inked a minor league deal with the Pirates, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch (on Twitter). He will report to the club's Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis.

Heilman struggled mightily as a member of the Diamondbacks' bullpen this year, pitching to a 6.88 ERA through 35 1/3 innings. His brief time with the Phillies didn't go any better, as he posted an 8.38 ERA through 9 2/3 innings for their Triple-A affiliate.

Heilman maintaned solid strikeout numbers (8.4 K/9) in Arizona, and was predominantly plagued by a fluky HR/FB rate of 20%. League average is around 10%, roughly Heilman's career mark entering 2010. He can still miss enough bats to contribute in the future if he can get back to keeping the ball in the park.

Phillies Release Cust, Heilman

The Phillies have released minor leaguers Jack Cust and Aaron Heilman, tweets Matt Gelb of the Philadephia Inquirer.

Cust was signed just last week and had a .250/348/.500 line in 23 Triple-A plate appearances. The Phillies are known to be looking for a left-handed bench bat, though Cust's lack of pinch-hitting success made him a less-than-ideal fit for the role. This is the veteran slugger's second release in the month after being cut loose by the Mariners on August 4.

Heilman, 32, signed with the Phils last month after being released by the D'Backs. Heilman posted a 6.88 ERA in 32 appearances coming out of the Arizona bullpen this season and his struggles continued in Philadelphia's minor league system — an 8.38 ERA in 9 1/3 innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Bad luck may have contributed to an ugly ERA that was twice Heilman's xFIP of 3.44. He allowed a career-high .360 batting average on balls in play and a career-high 20% of fly balls against him left the yard. His average fastball velocity dipped from 92.3 mph in 2010 to 90.6 mph in 2011.

D’Backs To Re-Sign Aaron Heilman

1:07pm: The Diamondbacks agreed to re-sign free agent pitcher Aaron Heilman, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Heilman declined the D'Backs offer of arbitration earlier in the offseason after making $2.15MM last year.

The right-hander will get the chance to join some combination of Joe Saunders, Ian Kennedy, Daniel Hudson, Zach Duke and Barry Enright in the team's rotation. The D'Backs expressed interest in adding rotation depth earlier in the month, though it appeared then that any newcomers would arrive on minor league deals.

Heilman posted a 4.50 ERA with 6.9 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 72 innings out of the bullpen for the D'Backs last year. The 32-year-old last started a game for the 2005 Mets, but he broke in as a starter in 2003.

Diamondbacks, Nationals Interested In Heilman

The Diamondbacks and Nationals are among several clubs that have expressed interest in free agent Aaron Heilman this winter, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN (via Twitter). After five straight years of 70-plus appearances out of the bullpen, Heilman is looking to become a starter.

Heilman, 32, posted a 4.50 ERA with 6.9 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 for the D'Backs last season. Since he declined Arizona's arbitration offer, the club will not receive compensation if they lose the Type B free agent. Last month we learned that the Rockies and Pirates were interested in the right-hander as a reliever.

Jeff Francis will decide on whether he will return to the Rockies soon, writes Jim Armstrong of The Denver Post. Colorado turned down a $7.5MM club option on the pitcher this offseason, making him a free agent. The Rockies are probably offering the left-hander a deal with about $1MM guaranteed.
The Rockies believe that the Mariners are asking too much for David Aardsma, tweets Troy Renck of The Denver Post. It was reported last night that the Rockies had interest in the veteran pitcher.
A new name to keep in mind for the Rockies is free agent reliever Aaron Heilman, Renck tweets. Colorado has tried to land the 32-year-old multiple times in recent years.
