Barry Zito

Who Has The Goods And Need For Zito?

By Tim Dierkes | April 18, 2006 at 12:16pm CDT

Billy Beane’s nondenial coupled with Jon Heyman’s rumor from a couple of days ago got me thinking some more about Barry Zito.  Said Heyman:

"If Zito makes it to free agency, a friend of Zito’s said he believes the Mets and Yankees are co-favorites to sign him."

That’s certainly logical.  Heyman also mentioned that Beane wants three younger, cheaper players for Zito if a trade is to take place.  That’s certainly been his requirement in the past.  What I’m wondering is: which contenders meet the minimum requirement of stud prospects and young guns?

I’ll use Baseball America’s Top 50 as a guide for requirement #1: stud prospect.  See Daric Barton (#32 in 2005, #28 this year) and Dan Meyer (yes, I know Meyer didn’t pan out so far but he was ranked #43 in 2005).  Which contenders even have a top 50 type guy?

Well, there’s the Angels.  They’ve got Brandon Wood, Howie Kendrick, and Erick Aybar in the top 50.  Aybar could be a longshot, but even that is doubtful.

Then there’s Minnesota, with Francisco Liriano.  There’s no way in hell he’s traded.

The Dodgers have Chad Billingsley, Andy LaRoche, Joel Guzman, and Russell Martin.  They’re stacked.

The Tigers have Justin Verlander, Cameron Maybin, and Joel Zumaya.  Zumaya was in a Javier Vazquez rumor this winter along with Curtis Granderson…for Tigers fans’ sake I hope that discussion never even occurred.

The Tribe boasts Andy Marte and Adam Miller.  The Mets have Lastings Milledge and Mike Pelfrey.  The Giants have Matt Cain.  The BrewCrew has Prince Fielder, Mark Rogers, and Ryan Braun.

The Braves have Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  The Red Sox have Jon Lester and Jon Papelbon.  The White Sox have Bobby Jenks.  The Cubs have Felix Pie.  The Yanks have Philip Hughes.  The Cards have Anthony Reyes.  The Blue Jays have Dustin McGowan.

15 contenders with at least one top 50 prospect.  We can cross the Twins and Giants off the list – those pitchers aren’t getting traded.  That leaves 13 clubs.  Which of these have a need for a starting pitcher?  (I’m going to eliminate teams that don’t need Zito, though it’s not unprecedented for a club to trade for a starter they don’t need.)

The Dodger rotation is five-deep, and I think it’ll be fine.  Plus, Billingsley is the sixth man.  The Angels are also set right now.  The Tigers are the same way, with Zumaya ready to step in.  Cleveland doesn’t have the need, and the Brewers are fine.  The White Sox and Blue Jays appear to be covered as well.

So here are the teams that need a guy like Zito and have a top 50 prospect:  Braves, Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees, Mets, and Cardinals.  Let’s take a closer look at these six.

Braves – They’re going with Smoltz, Hudson, Davies, Sosa, and Thomson as their front five.  They have at least two backups in Horacio Ramirez and Chuck James.  Atlanta was shopping Thomson recently, so I’d take that as a sign that they’re willing to look within if their starting pitching fails them (and I think it will).  While the team has shown a willingness to trade top prospects in the past, they seem like the least likely suitor for Zito.

Cubs – The Cubs have something resembling starting pitching depth, but have learned the folly of counting on Prior and Wood to save their season.  With Pie and young arms like Rich Hill and Angel Guzman, the Cubs have the goods and perhaps the desire to acquire Zito.

Cardinals – They have a ton of impending free agents in their starting rotation, so a trade-and-sign could make sense here.  Anthony Reyes and Adam Wainwright make for an intriguing starting point.  A failure by Ponson and a strange unwillingness to turn to Reyes could mean Walt Jocketty gets involved.

Red Sox – Ah, yes.  So they want to keep Papelbon at closer and can’t get anything out of David Wells?  And they want to keep Zito off the Yankees at least until 2007?  The fit is clear.  Lester and Dustin Pedroia would spark Beane’s interest for sure.

Yankees – They’re going to trade for a starting pitcher; it’s only a matter of how soon.  I outlined the four trade candidates in my Torii Hunter post.

Mets – As you know, it’s all about Milledge.  Why would Beane do this for anything less?  He holds the cards.  If there’s no Milledge, I have to think there’s no deal.  You can only pump up Brian Bannister’s value so much.

My prediction: Zito goes to the Yankees at the deadline.  But it’s got to be one of these six teams, right?

Thoughts On Zito

By Tim Dierkes | April 5, 2006 at 9:28am CDT

Just read the latest Barry Zito article, wherein Zito agreed with former teammates Johnny Damon and Jason Giambi that he would thrive in New York.  He declined to pick a favorite NY team, however.  At this point, it’s pretty clear that Minaya and Cashman are going to go toe to toe for his services this winter, and it’ll be pretty entertaining.  The rumormongering will be ridiculous.

The losing team will probably end up with Jason Schmidt, Kerry Wood, Kelvim Escobar, Andy Pettitte, or Mark Mulder.  I think the first four will have fine seasons, but I’m not so sure about Mulder.

I know this has been said before, probably by many of our friends at Athletics Nation.  But now I’m on board: I do not think Zito will be dealt this season.  Don’t worry, I’ll still pass along any decent rumor that comes my way.

The A’s were in a semi-rebuilding mode when they traded Hudson and Mulder.  They stayed in the playoff hunt, but they weren’t the team they are now.  The 2006 A’s are built to win and not rebuild at all.  Hence, the Thomas and Loaiza signings.  In my mind, the chances that Beane finds another Dan Haren available this July are slim.  It would be like the Phils trading Ryan Madson plus a top prospect, or the Twins giving up Scott Baker and a top prospect.  The White Sox giving up Brandon McCarthy.  Jocketty sending Anthony Reyes over.  None of these "young stud with Major League experience" scenarios sound feasible.  The A’s will just let Zito play out his last season as they have with many impending free agents in the past.

Gotham Baseball’s Zito Rumor

By Tim Dierkes | March 30, 2006 at 3:11pm CDT

Gotham Baseball’s Executive Editor, Mark Healey, had some informed speculation on Monday about a possible trade of Barry Zito to the Mets for Lastings Milledge and Brian Bannister.  I figured I’d pass it along, as these guys seem to have some good front office type sources.

Here are some highlights quoted from Healey from the thread:

"Call me nuts…but I still think something is happening here and will in the next couple of days…

Mike and I talk to scouts, front office people every week, sometimes daily….mostly to check on things, etc…

Before and after our respective trips to ST…we both did pre-work and post-work…

When people start getting tight-lipped, and strange things like Milledge and Bannister staying in Major League camp longer than they were supposed to be — my antenna goes up.

However, be that as it may, this thread was specualtion…if I had any corroboration, it’d be in the Rumor Mill.

[posted today] About five minutes after I posted the above I got a phone call from my West Coast guy saying that My speculation "might not be far off the mark" but wouldn’t elaborate…saying to check on what Oakland GM Billy Beane has been up to…

Hmmm…seems Billy traded the immortal Juan Cruz to the D’Backs for Brad Halsey (a 25 year old left-hander)…

Another starter, one less reliever for the Oaks?

The plot thickens…"

Astros Could Pursue Zito

By Tim Dierkes | March 13, 2006 at 11:05pm CDT

For months (seems like years) both New York teams have been claiming ownership of Barry Zito.  We know that he kind of likes the city and won’t re-sign with Oakland.  Both the Mets and Yankees sorely need a dependable #2 like Zito.

But Ken Rosenthal reminded us recently that the Astros will have a ton of free cash after 2006 for a player like Zito.  Jeff Bagwell and Andy Pettitte make a combined $34.5MM this year, and there’s little chance Roger Clemens is still around.  That will leave a lot of money and a huge void in the starting rotation behind Roy Oswalt.  Zito’s estimated worth according to Baseball Prospectus for 2007-2010? Just $22MM.  Not that the Yankees care.

If Houston doesn’t snag Zito, I see them signing or trading for Jose Contreras, Jason Schmidt, Kerry Wood, Kelvim Escobar, Adam Eaton, Mark Mulder, or Doug Davis instead.  Wood, of course, is from Irving, Texas – but does that really matter?  A topic for another time: with the impending free agency of Davis and Carlos Lee, should the Brewers go for broke in 2006?

Dodgers Looking At Hidalgo?

By Tim Dierkes | March 7, 2006 at 7:51pm CDT

With Jayson Werth possibly out til May, the Dodgers are in the market for a good fourth outfielder.  Word is that Los Angeles is considering signing Richard Hidalgo to fill the role.  The source is an emailer citing 1540 The Ticket, a radio station in California.  Hidalgo was last seen entertaining offers to play in Japan.

Reportedly, the station’s related rumor is that the Dodgers could ship Joel Guzman and Greg Miller to the A’s for Barry Zito before picking up Hidalgo.  Despite what Billy Beane has said, a source of mine tells me that at least twelve teams have inquired about the southpaw.  Guzman is the Dodgers’ third best prospect according to Baseball America and ranks anywhere from 12th to 29th among all prospects.

Is Billy Beane Messing With Us?

By Tim Dierkes | March 2, 2006 at 2:05pm CDT

I hate to keep plucking info from ESPN, but I can’t ignore some good stuff from Peter Gammons’s blog this morning.  Gammons quotes Billy Beane as saying this about Barry Zito:

"I have not had one call on Barry, nor have I made any inquiring about interest."

I find it hard to believe that Omar Minaya and Jim Hendry didn’t do so much as place a single phone call about Zito’s availability.  Were a dozen different sources misinformed about Zito trade rumors, or is Beane using Gammons to transmit a message?  We know Beane rarely talks to reporters other than Gammons.  The two have a quid pro quo type of relationship, according to Moneyball.

Gammons also mentions that MLB may already have a plan in place to contract four teams.  In addition, the Joey Gathright for Scott Olsen trade is still under consideration.  A no-brainer for the D-Rays in my opinion.

Benson Dealt To Orioles; Zito Implications?

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2006 at 1:28pm CDT

Many of you have already noticed by now that Newsday is reporting that the Mets traded Kris Benson to the Orioles for Jorge Julio and John Maine.  A tip of the cap to Orioles Hangout; I’m pretty sure they confirmation first.

The question on most people’s minds is this: is the Benson swap the initial movement indicating a trade of Barry Zito to the Mets?  If you recall, my Mets source indicated yesterday that Benson would be traded to Baltimore to acquire a prospect to Billy Beane’s liking.  I’ve got word out to a couple of sources to see if anything has changed.  In the meantime, let’s see what we can deduce.

First off, would the A’s have use for John Maine?  The 24 year-old righty starter was ranked 6th in the Orioles’ organization by Baseball America entering the 2005 season.  According to BA back then, Maine needed to refine his command and had a ceiling as a #3 starter.  They also mentioned that he was "probably a #4 or 5 guy on a first-division club."  Maine pitched kind of like a #4 starter in 128 innings at Triple A Ottawa in ’05.  He posted a 4.56 ERA with improved control while maintaining a solid K rate.

I haven’t projected Maine myself yet, but ZiPS thought he’d throw 153 innings of 4.41 ball in his first extended trial with the Orioles.  I think that’s great value for the price.  For basis of comparison, Maine’s 2005 doesn’t look terribly different from Danny Haren’s 2004.  Haren was certainly better, but it’s a fair comparison.  Interestingly, Baseball Prospectus lists these comparables for Maine: Joel Pineiro (2002), A.J. Burnett (2001), Juan Marichal (1961), Bob Gibson (1960), and strangely, Jorge Julio (2003).  I know the A’s already have a stable of starters, but Maine probably needs a little more time and a team can never have too much starting pitching depth.

I would speculate that the Mets would hang onto Jorge Julio to serve as Aaron Heilman’s replacement.  While most analysis today indicates that the Benson trade simply means Heilman starts for the Mets, I am skeptical.  According to MetsBlog earlier this month:

"The problem is that the only person who seems to see Heilman as a starter is Heilman.  Nearly all scouts and experts that I talked with all explained the same thing: Heilman’s repertoire is too hittable during his second time through a lineup."

Should Minaya package up Victor Diaz with someone to acquire a top flight prospect suitable to the A’s, I could really see this Zito deal coming to fruition.

New Possible Zito Scenario

By Tim Dierkes | January 20, 2006 at 3:50pm CDT

Just got a note from my Mets source on a possible Barry Zito trade scenario.  Here’s how this could play out:

The Orioles still have some interest in Kris Benson; VP Jim Duquette likes him.  Benson would be dealt to the O’s for young players of Billy Beane’s choice.

Victor Diaz would be shipped off by the Mets as well, but again for prospects coveted by Oakland.  The A’s don’t have room for Diaz given their glut of 1B/DH/OF types.  The prospects from both deals would then be packaged with Aaron Heilman and the Mets would receive Zito.

The Mets would likely sign Jeff DaVanon to platoon in right field with Xavier Nady to complement this trade.  The switch-hitting DaVanon didn’t do much with righties this year, but posted an .824 OPS against them in 2004.  Nady has a career line of .323/.400/.452 in 124 at-bats versus southpaws.   So keep an eye out for a DaVanon signing and Benson trade, because that could spell a Zito deal.

Latest Mets Rumblings

By Tim Dierkes | January 16, 2006 at 11:05am CDT

I spoke with my Mets source recently, and here’s what I came away with.

With Danys Baez out of the picture, the club will just focus on minor league invites and doesn’t plan on making any major acquisitions.  However, there is still an outside shot the Mets trade for Barry Zito; they are currently monitoring the situation.  Such a deal would be preceded by a trade of Kris Benson.  Zito is certainly someone the Mets will revisit during the season if nothing is worked out this winter.

According to my source, the Mets feel "very good" about their starting pitching depth.  Personally, as an unbiased observer, the rotation is not impressive at all.  Anyway, here’s the starting pitcher rankings from their depth chart:

Pedro Martinez
Tom Glavine

Kris Benson
Steve Trachsel
Victor Zambrano
Aaron Heilman
Brian Bannister

Alay Soler
Mike Pelfrey
(possible September call-up)

Basically you’re hoping Pedro holds up in his age 34 season and following that with a bunch of #3’s or worse.  Do you really want Benson starting Game 3 of a playoff series?

Cubs Still Discussing Zito, Tejada

By Tim Dierkes | January 2, 2006 at 5:29pm CDT

Just got off the phone with Dave Kaplan, host of Sports Central on WGN Radio 720 out of Chicago.  He gave me the latest on where the Cubs stand with Barry Zito.

Billy Beane is not sure whether he’ll deal Zito now or in July.  However, the teams have had discussions recently, and the A’s like the Cubs’ farm system quite a bit.  A deal for several of the Cubs’ young arms is a distinct possibility.  The A’s aren’t looking for Matt Murton in the trade, but rather pitchers like Rich Hill, Angel Guzman, and Sean Marshall.  There’s been plenty of debate on this site about Rich Hill’s future in the Major Leagues, but it’s a fact that many teams absolutely love him and are trying to pry him away from the Cubs.  Hill has a ton of trade value.  Anyway, sit tight on the Zito idea; nothing’s going down today.

Kaplan also mentioned that the Tejada trade is "not dead" for the Cubs.  I don’t know which names are currently being tossed around, but rest assured the Cubs still have a chance at acquiring him.
