Minor MLB Transactions: 5/24/2016

By Jeff Todd | May 24, 2016 at 8:45pm CDT

Here are the day’s minor moves:

  • The Angels announced tonight that right-handers A.J. Achter and Al Alburquerque, each of whom was designated for assignment recently, have cleared waivers and been sent outright to Triple-A Salt Lake. Achter was an offseason waiver claim from the Twins, whereas Alburquerque inked a one-year deal as a free agent. The 27-year-old Achter has allowed six runs on 15 hits and three walks in 11 1/3 innings while striking out just four. Alburquerque, 29, hasn’t appeared in a big league game for the Halos this season, though he was recently brought up from Triple-A. He posted a 2.40 ERA with Salt Lake and fanned 15 batters in 15 innings, though he also walked nine in that time and threw three wild pitches. Control has long been an issue for Alburquerque.
  • The Orioles announced that they’ve selected the contract of lefty Ashur Tolliver from Double-A Bowie today. The 28-year-old has seen his career slowed by injuries but has enjoyed a very strong season at Double-A thus far, recording a 2.42 ERA with a 25-to-8 K/BB ratio in 26 innings of work. Tolliver will step into the lefty relief role on the Orioles’ roster that was vacated by yesterday’s trade of Brian Matusz to the Braves.

Earlier Moves

  • First baseman/outfielder Travis Ishikawa is on the market again after being released by the White Sox Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago tweets. He scuffled to a .201/.277/.344 batting line in 175 plate appearances at Triple-A Charlotte. The eight-year MLB veteran, now 32 years of age, owns a lifetime .255/.321/.391 batting line in 1,050 trips to the plate at the major league level.
  • The Phillies have announced the signing of Cuban outfielder Osmel Aguila to a minor league deal, the club announced. The 27-year-old hasn’t played in the Serie Nacional since 2014. Overall, he owns a .280/.384/.447 batting line over 1,310 in the top Cuban domestic league.
  • Angels righty Danny Reynolds has been assigned to Triple-A after clearing outright waivers, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports on Twitter. That ends the DFA carousel for the 24-year-old, at least for the time being. He’ll need to show improved command to earn a shot in the L.A. pen.
  • The Orioles released infielder Steve Tolleson, David Hall of the Virginian-Pilot tweets. The 32-year-old has spent time with the O’s and Jays in recent years, and owns a .245/.299/.372 slash in his 363 career plate appearances at the major league level. He has dealt with injuries early in 2016 and has only appeared in eight games to date.
  • First baseman Cody Decker was released by the Rockies, per Baseball America’s Matt Eddy, who rounded up several transactions of note that have yet to appear here at MLBTR. Decker had solid power numbers, as usual, at Triple-A but he also received only 78 plate appearances and struck out in thirty of them.
  • The Tigers have cut ties with several minor league veterans, including catcher Humberto Quintero, via Eddy. Now 36, Quintero failed to crack the bigs last year after a dozen consecutive years in which he spet at least some time in the show. He was hitting .250/.297/.333 at Triple-A over 65 pate appearances.
  • The Brewers released righty Jim Miller, the Baseball America report provides. He was off to a 7.41 ERA in 17 innings at Triple-A, with 19 punch-outs but also 11 walks. Miller, 34, had a solid campaign for the A’s back in 2012 but hasn’t done much at the major league level before or since.
  • Yankees release outfielder Jared Mitchell, Eddy adds. The 27-year-old, a former first-round pick, was off to a .250/.337/.361 start in 83 plate appearances at Double-A. He’s never managed to develop any consistency at the plate in a seven-year minor league career.
  • The Phillies released outfielder Alfredo Marte, Eddy reports. Hes seen minimal action in parts of three MLB seasons, and was acquired by the Phils as the team sought to build out its outfield depth. But Marte has recorded just five hits and a single walk over 37 plate appearances on the year at the highest level of the minors.

Angels Designate Danny Reynolds For Assignment

By Jeff Todd | May 20, 2016 at 5:45pm CDT

The Angels have designated righty Danny Reynolds for assignment, per a club announcement. His 40-man spot will go to Tim Lincecum, whose deal with the club is now official.

Reynolds, 24, was claimed off waivers from the Astros in early April. He’s bounced around the waiver wire a fair bit of late, with organizations obviously intrigued by his arm but finding it difficult to continue dedicating a valuable roster position to hold onto him.

Originally a third-round pick by the Halos, Reynolds rated as L.A.’s 16th-best prospect, per Baseball America, heading into the 2015 season. BA cited his upper-90s heater and hard-to-hit, but inconsistent, slider.

Reynolds hasn’t progressed as hoped since, however. He pitched to a 4.57 ERA with 10.4 K/9 against 5.8 BB/9 over 43 1/3 innings last year with the Angels’ Double-A affiliate. And Reynolds hadn’t taken a step forward in the early going this year upon returning to Arkansas. To date, he has posted a 5.62 earned run mark in 16 frames, with 15 strikeouts and a dozen walks on his ledger.

Angels Claim Danny Reynolds From Astros

By charliewilmoth | April 10, 2016 at 2:16pm CDT

The Angels have announced that they’ve claimed righty Danny Reynolds from the Astros and returned him to Double-A Arkansas, where he pitched last season. The Astros designated Reynolds for assignment on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Reynolds was previously a prospect in the Angels system, but he was claimed last December by the Dodgers and then the Astros. Last season, the 24-year-old posted a 4.57 ERA, 10.4 K/9 and 5.8 BB/9 in 43 1/3 innings of relief at Arkansas, increasing his strikeout rate but also his walk rate. Reynolds, a third-round pick of the Angels in 2009, has never pitched in the big leagues.

Astros Designate Danny Reynolds For Assignment

By Steve Adams | April 7, 2016 at 1:22pm CDT

The Astros have designated right-hander Danny Reynolds for assignment, tweets MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. Presumably, the move will clear spot on the 40-man roster for fellow right-hander Chris Devenski; earlier today, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle tweeted that Houston planned to select Devenski’s contract and option right-hander Michael Feliz to Triple-A after Feliz threw 107 pitches in relief of Collin McHugh’s disastrous start yesterday.

Reynolds, 24, went from the Angels to the Dodgers to the Astros by way of waiver claim this offseason, and now could very well be exposed to waivers once again in the wake of his most recent DFA. The former sixth-rounder made it to Triple-A in 2014 but took a step back down the ladder in 2015, spending the entire year with he Halos’ Double-A affiliate, where he worked to a 4.57 ERA with 10.4 K/9 vs. 5.8 BB/9 in 43 1/3 innings of relief. Reynolds moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen in 2014 and has seen his strikeout rate spike significantly since that time; over the past two minor league campaigns, he’s whiffed 113 batters in 105 1/3 innings. He did seem to develop some control issues in 2015, however, as evidenced by an uncharacteristically lofty 5.8 BB/9 rate.

As for the 25-year-old Devenski, who will be making his big league debut if he gets into a game with the Astros, the former White Sox 25th-rounder rated 24th among Houston farmhands, per MLB.com, which noted in its free scouting report that he sits 88-91 mph with his fastball and could sneak his way into the back of a big league rotation if everything clicks. If not, an above-average changeup and solid control could land him a spot in the bullpen. Last season, Devenski logged a 3.01 ERA with 7.8 K/9 against 2.5 BB/9 in 119 2/3 innings with Houston’s Double-A affiliate.

Astros Claim Danny Reynolds From Dodgers

By Steve Adams | December 23, 2015 at 3:42pm CDT

The Astros announced that they’ve claimed right-handed reliever Danny Reynolds off waivers from the Dodgers, who had previously designated the 24-year-old for assignment to clear room for lefty Tyler Olson.

Reynolds is making his way around the waiver wire right now, as he’s already gone from the Angels to the Dodgers via waiver claim, making Houston his third organization of the offseason. Last season, Reynolds, a former sixth-round pick of the Angels (2009), reached Triple-A in 2014 but spent the 2015 campaign back in Double-A, where he posted a 4.57 ERA with 10.4 K/9 vs. 5.8 BB/9 in 43 1/3 innings of relief. Reynolds’ strikeout rate has trended significantly upwards since he was moved from the rotation into the bullpen. The control issues he battled in 2015 were the first notable problems he’s had with walks as a professional, so the Dodgers will hope that they’re able to correct the situation in 2015 and get him back on track.

Dodgers Designate Danny Reynolds For Assignment

By charliewilmoth | December 19, 2015 at 9:54am CDT

In announcing their recent acquisition of lefty Tyler Olson from the Mariners, the Dodgers also announced that they had designated righty Danny Reynolds for assignment. Reynolds’ time in the Dodgers organization has been brief, as they claimed him from the Angels less than two weeks ago.

The 24-year-old Reynolds spent the 2015 season pitching in relief with the Angels’ Double-A Arkansas affiliate, and he struggled with his control, posting a 4.57 ERA with 10.4 K/9 and 5.8 BB/9 after earning a place on the Angels’ 40-man roster with a better campaign the previous season. Most reports indicate, however, that Reynolds’ fastball plays very well in relief, reaching into the high 90s.
