2009 Elias Rankings Released

By Mike Axisa | November 9, 2009 at 2:34pm CDT

The 2009 Elias Rankings have been released, and Ed Price of AOL FanHouse has a full list of the Type-A and B free agents.

Our 2010 MLB Free Agent list has been updated, and below is a summary of differences between the official rankings, and those projected by Eddie Bajek.

  • Chone Figgins qualifies as a Type-A, not a Type-B as projected.
  • Vladimir Guerrero qualifies as a Type-B, not a Type-A as projected.
  • Gregg Zaun goes from no compensation to Type-B.
  • Jerry Hairston Jr. goes from Type-B to no compensation.
  • Hideki Matsui goes from Type-B to no compensation.
  • Aubrey Huff goes from Type-B to no compensation.

If you're not sure how free agent compensation works, or if you just forgot, make sure you check out our primer.

Elias Ranking Projections Update

By Tim Dierkes | October 11, 2009 at 11:52am CDT

Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts has reverse-engineered the Elias Rankings, and he's providing his projections exclusively here at MLB Trade Rumors.

We've cleaned up a few errors since last time; the following players changed types:  Yorvit Torrealba from no type to B, Brian Schneider from B to no type, Brian Giles from A to B, Reed Johnson from B to no type, Gary Sheffield from B to no type, Fernando Tatis from no type to B,  Mark DeRosa from A to B, and Pedro Feliz from B to no type.

There is still a chance we dig up an error involving DL days, but as of right now here are the rankings.

Elias Rankings Update

By Tim Dierkes | October 7, 2009 at 11:42am CDT

At the end of each season, The Elias Sports Bureau ranks all MLB players numerically based on a bunch of stats.  Every player is categorized in one of five position groups and by league.  The rankings cover a two-year time period.  They are used to determine whether free agents are Type A, Type B, or neither.  If you’d like a reminder on how draft pick compensation works, read up here.

Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts reverse-engineered the Elias Rankings last year.  Eddie’s incredible work was made possible in large part due to information provided by ESPN’s Keith Law.  Eddie is now providing the rankings exclusively to MLB Trade Rumors.  These projections cover the 2008-09 seasons.  Note to journalists: if you use these projections in an article, please credit Eddie Bajek and MLB Trade Rumors.
