Rosenthal’s Latest: Gross, Weaver, Encarnacion

By Tim Dierkes | February 23, 2008 at 3:00pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal is on the scene with some new rumors.

  • Astros president Tal Smith arguing other teams’ arbitration cases.   Rosenthal finds it a bit awkward, while Keith Law finds it to be a hilarious conflict of interest.
  • Possible trades of Matt Murton to the Padres or Rangers seem to have fizzled.  The Padres may turn to the Brewers’ Gabe Gross, a player who previously caught the eye of the A’s, Indians, and Braves.  Our good friend PECOTA sees a .267/.366/.467 line from Gross this year.  With Gross and various veteran starters, the Brewers have some surpluses to work with.
  • Rosenthal believes the Cardinals’ interest in Jeff Weaver to be not especially serious.  They’ve got in-house candidates to start, and Matt Clement needing some time is not a revelation.
  • We’ve read about extension possibilities for Matt Capps and Alex Rios.  To that mix, Rosenthal adds Edwin Encarnacion.  The Reds might want to do it now; he seems primed for a big year.

Pirates Rumors: Bay, Nady, Capps

By Tim Dierkes | January 26, 2008 at 10:56am CDT

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a few new Pirates tidbits today.

  • Jason Bay expressed displeasure with the Pirates’ lack of activity, but his comments were respectful.  He hopes to stay with the Bucs and win. Bay says he "found a whole different level of being in shape" this winter, which bodes well for a bounceback.
  • Kovacevic says Neal Huntington and Kevin Towers have been in touch this week regarding Xavier Nady but nothing is close.  Towers admitted publicly that he was looking at Nady and Matt Murton.
  • There’s been "little progress" on a multiyear deal for Matt Capps. The Pirates approached Capps earlier this month with three or four-year scenarios in mind.

Bucs May Extend Capps, But Not Sanchez

By Tim Dierkes | January 7, 2008 at 7:29am CDT

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the latest regarding new GM Neal Huntington’s plans for closer Matt Capps and second baseman Freddy Sanchez.

Capps, 24, posted a fine 2007 (2.28 ERA) in his first year as the Pirates’ closer.  He’d be under team control through 2011 anyway if the Pirates went year-to-year with him.  But Huntington has an offer to Capps out for three or four years, buying out most or all of his arbitration years.  Kovacevic notes that this is a strategy Huntington observed under Mark Shapiro in Cleveland.

Huntington appears to have less faith in 30 year-old second baseman Sanchez.  He seems to have developed into a solid .800 OPS guy, and his second half in ’07 showed further upside.  Sanchez has two more years under team control; if the Pirates gave him an extension they’d want it to buy out his first year of free agency in 2010.  Sanchez would probably not be amenable to that, but even going two years would give the Pirates more cost certainty. At any rate, it would make sense for Huntington to entertain offers on Sanchez.

Odds and Ends: Rolen, Silva, Capps

By Tim Dierkes | November 11, 2007 at 10:54pm CDT

Here are some hot stove links to digest this evening.

  • The New York Post’s Joel Sherman runs down some third base options for the Yankees.  He feels that Scott Rolen, Bill Hall, Freddy Sanchez, and a few others might be reasonable options.  Bernie Miklasz says there’s no indication any team is truly interested in Rolen, though Randy Youngman suggests the Angels may look at him.
  • Youngman also believes the Halos have slight interest in Carlos Silva, if he can be had at less than $10MM annually.  Not bloody likely.
  • Jon Paul Morosi thinks the Tigers could go after the Pirates’ Damaso Marte, Salomon Torres, or even Matt Capps.
  • Hat tip to Bucco Blog on the Sherman and Morosi links above.  Check out Jake’s latest post, where he uncovers some interesting minor league free agents.
  • Rob Biertempfel names David Riske, Doug Brocail, Shawn Camp, and Scott Linebrink as some relievers the Pirates might consider.  I imagine Riske and Linebrink will be too pricey.
  • Troy E. Renck believes the Rockies might inquire about Cliff Lee.
  • RotoAuthority assesses the health risks within the Nationals’ rotation.

Pirates Aim To Extend Capps, Sanchez

By Tim Dierkes | September 16, 2007 at 6:07pm CDT

According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the next Pirates GM will approach closer Matt Capps and second baseman Freddy Sanchez about multiyear contracts.

It certainly makes sense to lock up Capps.  The 24 year-old is having a spectacular season, his first as the Bucs’ closer.  He’s got a 2.04 ERA and 3.9 K/BB.  Kovacevic says the plan appears to be to throw him some extra bucks in ’08 in return for a discount covering his three arbitration years.  I wonder whether the Red Sox will consider a similar contract offer for Jonathan Papelbon, who has the same amount of service time.

Sanchez turns 30 in December.  He’s hitting .312/.352/.454 this year in 570 ABs.  Kovacevic believes the goal for him is to cover his final two years before free agency (2008-09).  However it’s not out of the question that the Bucs try to tack on 2010 as well.  His current $2.75MM salary will definitely increase next year through arbitration if a multiyear pact isn’t reached.  I could see an offer something like two years, $10MM or three years, $18MM.
