Red Sox, Sterling Sharp Agree To Minor League Deal

The Red Sox have re-signed righty Sterling Sharp to a minor league contract, according to Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America. The 27-year-old had spent the tail end of the 2022 campaign in the Boston organization as well.

Sharp, a 22nd-round draftee of the Nationals in 2016, got to the big leagues in 2020 as a Rule 5 pick of the Marlins. He made four appearances out of the Miami bullpen, allowing seven runs through 5 1/3 innings. The Marlins designated him for assignment before season’s end, relinquishing his Rule 5 rights in the process. After clearing waivers, he was returned to the Nationals without occupying a spot on the 40-man roster.

The Michigan native remained in the Washington farm system through the middle of last year. He had a tough go with Triple-A Rochester, pitching to a 6.62 ERA across 66 2/3 innings. The Nats released him in August but he quickly caught on with Boston. The Sox sent him to Double-A Portland, where he closed out the season well. Through seven starts with the Sea Dogs, he pitched to a 3.18 ERA with a decent 22% strikeout percentage and 45.3% grounder rate.

That earned Sharp another look in the Boston organization, as he returns after a brief first trip to minor league free agency. He’ll serve as rotation depth in the upper minors and could get a look with Triple-A Worcester after his solid finish in Double-A. Sharp still has a full slate of option years remaining, meaning the Sox could move him between Boston and the upper minors for the foreseeable future if he earns a spot on the 40-man roster.

Minor MLB Transactions: Jackson, Sharp

Checking in a couple recent minor league deals:

  • The Giants signed utilityman Drew Jackson to a non-roster contract last week. He’s been assigned to Triple-A Sacramento, where he’s appeared in five games. A former Seattle draftee, Jackson has played in the Mariners, Dodgers, Orioles, Mets and A’s organizations before landing with San Francisco. He got into three big league games with Baltimore in 2019 and returned to the majors for a trio of contests with the A’s this April. Jackson was brought up as a COVID substitute but quickly landed on the virus list himself and was then returned to the minor leagues. He hit .243/.353/.297 through 173 plate appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas, drawing walks at a robust 13.3% clip but striking out at a massive 32.4% rate. Oakland released the 29-year-old late last month.
  • The Red Sox agreed to a minor league pact with right-hander Sterling Sharp on Tuesday, according to his transactions log at MLB.com. Sharp was released from a non-roster arrangement with the Nationals last week. Now 27, Sharp was regarded among the better pitching prospects in the Washington farm system during his time in the lower minors. The sinkerballer was a Rule 5 draftee of the Marlins in 2020. He broke camp and made four MLB appearances with Miami, allowing seven runs in 5 1/3 innings, before being designated for assignment and returned to Washington. Sharp has spent the past two years in the upper levels of the Nats’ system, including a 2022 campaign at Triple-A Rochester. He started 13 of his 18 appearances but was tagged for a 6.62 ERA with a below-average 19.3% strikeout rate over 66 2/3 innings for the Red Wings.

Nationals Add Sterling Sharp, Jeremy De La Rosa To Player Pool

9:45am: The Nats are adding Sharp and outfield prospect Jeremy De La Rosa to their 60-man player pool, Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post reports (via Twitter). Both will head to the team’s alternate training site in Fredricksburg. De La Rosa, 18, ranks 15th among Nats farmhands at MLB.com and at FanGraphs. He’ll be able to get some developmental reps with the club’s staff now, although being added to the 60-man pool also makes him eligible to be directly included in a trade to another club (as opposed to being shipped off as a PTBNL).

8:50am: The Marlins have returned right-hander Sterling Sharp, their pick in last year’s Rule 5 Draft, to the Nationals, per a team announcement from the Nats. Miami designated Sharp for assignment earlier this week, and the fact that he was returned indicates he went unclaimed on outright waivers.

Sharp, 25, appeared in four games with the Fish but struggled in his final two outings. Overall, he was tagged for seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, five walks and a hit batter with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 frames. Sharp’s heavy sinker helped him keep the ball on the ground at a 65 percent clip in his brief time with the Marlins. However, the Marlins were forced to make a broad-reaching series of moves in the wake of their team-wide Covid-19 outbreak, one of which was to designate Sharp for assignment. It’s eminently possible that this outcome would’ve occurred eventually anyhow, particularly in light of his struggles.

Regardless, Sharp now returns to the Nats and gives them a relatively near-term option for their pitching staff. He’s not on the 40-man roster but could emerge as a candidate for a big league call up before long. Sharp logged 49 2/3 frames in Double-A last year, pitching to a 3.99 ERA and 2.59 FIP with 8.2 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, 0.18 HR/9 and a whopping 63.3 percent ground-ball rate.

Marlins Designate Sterling Sharp For Assignment

The Marlins made a series of roster moves Monday, beginning with the announcement that right-hander Sterling Sharp has been designated for assignment. Miami also reinstated infielder Eddy Alvarez from the paternity list and optioned him to the alternate training site. Lefty Stephen Tarpley, meanwhile, has been placed on the 10-day IL due to an oblique strain, while fellow southpaw Brandon Leibrandt was optioned to the alternate site.

Up from the alternate site in place of Sharp, Tarpley and Leibrant are first baseman Lewin Diaz and right-handers Jorge Guzman and Jesus Tinoco.

Sharp, 25, joined the Marlins via the NL East-rival Nationals as a Rule 5 pick over the winter. He went on to throw 5 1/3 innings with the Marlins this year before they booted him from their roster, but Sharp struggled mightily along the way. The soft-tossing Sharp made four appearances out of Miami’s bullpen and yielded seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and five walks, striking out just three in the process. Sharp will now head to the waiver wire, and if nobody claims him there, the Marlins will have to offer him back to the Nats.

Alex Vesia, Sterling Sharp Make Marlins’ Roster

Left-handed reliever Alex Vesia and righty Sterling Sharp have made the Marlins’ Opening Day roster, per reports from Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald and Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter links). Vesia is not on the team’s 40-man roster, so his contract will be selected before the season kicks off. The Marlins’ 40-man roster is technically full, but they have a few players who appear to be on the Covid-19 injured list, and those players won’t count against the 40-man until they’re activated. A corresponding move or moves from the club may yet come, depending on other additions Miami wishes to make.

It seems safe to say that the 24-year-old Vesia has exceeded expectations set for him when he was a 17th-round pick just two summers ago. A product of Division-II Cal State East Bay, Vesia skyrocketed across three levels last year, pitching to a combined 1.76 ERA with a ridiculous 100-to-19 K/BB ratio in 66 2/3 innings of relief. He’s a pure bullpen prospect, but Vesia has a career 1.62 ERA since being drafted.

He ranks 21st among Miami prospects, per FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen, and checks in 27th at MLB.com. Vesia’s innings in 2020 will obviously be limited, given expanded rosters and the shortened season, but he’ll get his first look at MLB opponents in the near future and could potentially be a piece of the Miami bullpen for years to come.

Sharp spent the first few years of his professional career with the division-rival Nationals, who used a 22nd-round pick on him in 2016. The Marlins plucked Sharp from the Nats with the No. 3 overall selection in last December’s Rule 5 Draft after he turned in a productive season among the rookie, Low-A and Double-A levels in 2019. Sharp totaled 58 2/3 frames of 3.53 ERA pitching and 8.0 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9. FanGraphs (No. 30) and MLB.com (28th) regard the 25-year-old Sharp as a prospect of note in the Marlins’ system, with Longenhagen writing he could turn into a back-end starter in MLB.
