Walter Silva

Padres DFA Walter Silva

By Eddie Schmid | July 7, 2009 at 6:46pm CDT

According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, the Padres have designated RHP Walter Silva for assignment. Infielder Craig Stansberry has been recalled to replace Silva on the roster.

The Padres had inked the 32-year-old Silva to a minor league deal in February out of the Mexican Winter League. Silva started six games for the Padres and put up an ugly 8.76 ERA and 11/15 K/BB ratio in 24.2 innings. Brock notes the Padres don't have to make up Silva's rotation spot until Saturday, so it's unclear who will replace him for now.

Padres Will Solve Pitching Problem From Within

By Brian Shephard | April 26, 2009 at 4:23pm CDT

Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the Padres will promote right-hander Chad Gaudin before Monday's game for a start on Tuesday against the Rockies.

According to Brock, Padres GM Kevin Towers said Sunday that he will not seek to acquire pitching help in a trade.

The Padres have been hit hard by injuries to their rotation, placing three starters on the disabled list in the last month. Cha Seung Baek and Walter Silva have strained forearms, and Shawn Hill was moved to the DL after leaving a game with inflammation in his elbow.

Padres Invite Walter Silva to Spring Training

By Brian Shephard | February 21, 2009 at 5:41pm CDT

According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, the Padres will give right-handed pitcher Walter Silva a shot to earn a spot in the rotation out of Spring Training. He will be on loan from Monterrey of the Mexican League.

Tom Krasovic of The Sand Diego Union-Tribune reported yesterday that the teams had "reached terms on what basically amounts to a six-week tryout for Silva." Krasovic said that Monterrey stands to get about $400,000 if the Padres keep Silva.

Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, a teammate of Silva’s in the Caribbean World Series, first recommended Silva to the Padres. Silva went 7-8 with a 4.21 ERA for Monterrey last season. He pitched well in the Caribbean World Series, going 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts for Mazatlan.
