Wilfredo Ledezma

Week In Review: 8/24 – 8/30

By Steve Adams | August 31, 2008 at 5:18pm CDT

Sunday afternoon is here again… let’s have a look back at some of the moves and rumors since last time:

  • The injury-plagued Red Sox acquired Mark Kotsay to help compensate for their injuries. In exchange, the Braves received minor league outfielder Luis Sumoza. Nice acquisition by the Red Sox; Kotsay has been swinging a solid bat this season.
  • The Twins acquired Eddie Guardado from Texas in exchange for minor league pitcher Mark Hamburger. Guardado has spent the majority of his career with Minnesota and provides a solid arm to the bullpen. To make room for him, they DFA’d Mike Lamb. Nice move by the Twins, with the added benefit of being able to see "Rangers trade Guardado for Hamburger" in the news. Now that’s a headline!
  • The Phillies added a veteran player as well, when they acquired Matt Stairs from Toronto in exchange for minor league lefty Fabio Castro. Stairs should be a decent option off the bench, and he’s still perfectly capable of hitting the ball out of the park.
  • Scott Boras continues to find ways to create controversy. He’s now claiming that Pittsburgh’s top pick Pedro Alvarez verbally agreed to his $6MM signing bonus after the midnight deadline, and is trying to demand that the contract be renegotiated for a higher number. The Players Association has filed a grievance on his behalf. Alvarez could wind up back in the 2009 draft pool. Here’s a look at some baseball blogs’ opinions on the matter.
  • Minor moves: The Diamondbacks claimed Wil Ledezma off waivers from San Diego, the Braves signed Elmer Dessens to a minor-league contract, and the Astros gave one-year extensions to both Brian Moehler and Darin Erstad.

D’Backs Claim Ledezma

By Tim Dierkes | August 29, 2008 at 4:19pm CDT

According to the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks claimed lefty Wil Ledezma off waivers from the Padres.  Ledezma, 27, posted a 4.47 ERA in 54.1 innings.  Walks have been a problem for him.  He’s under team control through 2010, if the D’Backs want to go to arbitration with him.

Odds and Ends: Broussard, Ledezma, Cooper

By Tim Dierkes | June 10, 2008 at 10:58pm CDT

More random linkage.

  • The Yankees have released first baseman Ben Broussard.
  • The Padres designated Wil Ledezma for assignment.  The 27 year-old could help someone as a reliever.
  • The first first-rounder of ’08 has signed: David Cooper of the Blue Jays.  He could be in High-A ball by year’s end.  Last year’s 17th pick, Blake Beavan, got about $1.5MM.  By the way, only 26% of readers thought the Jays made the right choice with Cooper (according to our in-draft poll).
  • Funny Mike Mussina quote from John Feinstein’s new book.

Braves Acquire Royce Ring

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2007 at 5:05pm CDT

Alright, blog service is back up.  Booyah.  As you may know, a bunch of southpaws were swapped today: the Braves got Royce Ring from the Padres for Will Startup and Wil Ledezma.

Should be nice to have Ring around in case things don’t work out with Ron Mahay. Still, it would’ve been nice to see John Schuerholz come up with some kind of starter for the back end of the rotation.  Maybe in August.

Startup’s been solid in Triple A, and the Padres might be able to coax some goodness out of the twice-traded Ledezma.

With so many decent lefties floating around at minimal cost, you have to wonder why a team would ever sign Mike Stanton.  But that’s why they’re GMs and I’m just a guy who blogs until he gets carpal tunnel.

Braves/Tigers Reliever Swap

By Tim Dierkes | June 20, 2007 at 4:03pm CDT

The Braves and Tigers swapped relievers today, with the Braves sending Macay McBride over to Detroit for Wilfredo Ledezma.

McBride, a 24 year-old left-handed reliever, has experienced control problems for most of his Braves’ career.  The Braves drafted the little lefty 24th overall in 2001, and he was converted to relief in ’04.  He did have a solid second half year, crediting a change in his delivery.  His control was again terrible in April of this year but he seems to have corrected that.

Ledezma, 26, is also a southpaw.  He was a Rule V pick out of the Boston system, which caused him to jump from A ball to the Majors.  It’s been an odd development path for him.  A sore elbow surfaced in ’05, but he’s been OK since. Ledezma can be used as a starter if necessary; he’s got a good curveball.
