Minor MLB Transactions: 12/3/20

By Connor Byrne | December 3, 2020 at 10:00pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around baseball…

  • The Rays have signed righty David Hess to a minors deal, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. The Orioles, who chose Hess in the fifth round of the 2014 draft, outrighted him in October. He debuted in the majors in 2018 and has since recorded a 5.86 ERA/6.41 FIP with 6.76 K/9 and 3.26 BB/9 in 190 1/3 innings.

Earlier transactions:

  • The Rockies announced that they have acquired left-hander Yoan Aybar from the Red Sox for infielder Christian Koss. Aybar, now 23, didn’t produce much as an outfielder through 2017, which led the Red Sox to move him to the mound. With a fastball that can reach triple digits, Aybar pitched to a 4.61 ERA with 11.1 K/9 and 6.5 BB/9 in 56 2/3 innings between the Single-A and High-A levels in 2019. Koss, who will turn 23 in January, was a 12th-round pick of the Rockies in 2019 who hasn’t gotten past rookie ball. He did perform very well there during his first pro season, though, as he slashed .332/.447/.605 with 11 home runs in 238 plate appearances.
  • The Brewers tweeted that they’ve signed third baseman Zach Green to a minor league contract with an invitation to big league camp. The 26-year-old was a third-round pick of the Phillies in 2012 who spent the previous two seasons in the Giants organization. Green made his MLB debut in 2020 and totaled 16 plate appearances, though he picked up just two hits. However, Green isn’t far removed from an excellent 2019 showing in Triple-A, where he slashed .282/.380/.659 with 25 home runs in 297 plate appearances.
  • Right-hander Zach Thompson announced on Twitter that he has signed with the Marlins. It’s presumably a minors deal for Thompson, who had been with the White Sox since they selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 draft. The 27-year-old topped out in Triple-A ball in 2019 with 70 1/3 innings of 5.50 ERA ball. While Thompson had difficulty preventing runs then, he did post impressive strikeout and walk numbers (10.0 K/9, 2.9 BB/9).
  • The Pirates outrighted first baseman/outfielder Will Craig to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Adam Berry of MLB.com tweets. Craig joined the Pirates as a first-rounder in 2016, but his major league impact has been minimal to this point. He collected four plate appearances in his Pittsburgh debut last season, but he went hitless in that short span and the Pirates designated him for assignment last week. In his most recent minor league action, in 2019, the 26-year-old batted .249/.326/.435 with 23 homers across 556 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.

Giants Outright, Re-Sign Zach Green & Cristhian Adames

By Jeff Todd and Connor Byrne | November 4, 2019 at 4:58pm CDT

The Giants announced that they have outrighted infielders Zach Green and Cristhian Adames. Both players will remain in the organization after agreeing to new minor-league deals.

Green, a Northern California native whom the Phillies chose in the third round of the 2012 draft, is now in line for his second season with the Giants. He signed a minors pact with San Francisco last winter and then spent the majority of the season as a member of Triple-A Sacramento, with which he torched Pacific Coast League pitching for a .282/.380/.659 line and 25 home runs in just 297 trips to the plate. The 25-year-old Green’s stellar minor league output earned him his first major league call-up during the season, though he only mustered a .143/.250/.214 line in 16 plate appearances.

Adames, 28, is an ex-Rockie who joined the Giants on a minors pact in July. The normally light-hitting Adames was effective at Sacramento, where he batted .283/.364/.517 with six HRs over 165 PA. The Giants called Adames up in September, when he collected seven hits in 24 tries.

Giants Activate Evan Longoria, Option Zach Green

By George Miller | August 4, 2019 at 12:31pm CDT

The Giants have activated third baseman Evan Longoria from the 10-day injured list, tweets Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group. In a corresponding move, Zach Green has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.

Longoria had been on the injured list since July 15 after dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. The injury came at an inopportune time for the 33-year-old, who had been enjoying perhaps his best month as a Giant before he was forced out of action. Prior to his deactivation, Longoria had muscled six home runs in just 34 plate appearances for the month of July. He managed an otherworldly 1.537 OPS in that span, but it bears mentioning that those results are the exception—not the rule—to Longoria’s history in San Francisco.

It’s notable that the team Longoria will join on Sunday is markedly different than the way he left it. While the Giants had found themselves in the midst of a hot streak when Longoria last suited up on July 15, the club was still below .500 and seemed poised to sell off Major-League pieces at the trade deadline. However, the Giants have since catapulted themselves into the hunt for playoff positioning, and a Wild Card berth, while perhaps not likely, does not seem out of the question. Longoria, a former Ray, is of course no stranger to September Wild Card races, so one hopes that the IL stint won’t halt his stretch of success that began in July.

Interestingly, Pablo Sandoval managed to force his way back into the hearts of the San Francisco faithful while Longoria was on the shelf, so the team will have to find at-bats for both players down the stretch. Bruce Bochy managed to handle the pair’s workload nicely when both were available earlier in the season, so there shouldn’t be any problems here.

Zach Green got his first taste of the Major-League game and will now have a chance to iron out some issues with more regular at-bats in Triple-A. He only made 16 plate appearances in a brief 8-game big-league stint, but a strong Triple-A track record suggests this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the 25-year-old Green. In his first crack at the game’s highest level, he batted .143/.250/.214

Giants To Select Zach Green

By Connor Byrne | July 20, 2019 at 10:14pm CDT

The Giants will select corner infielder Zach Green from Triple-A Sacramento prior to Sunday’s game, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. The team will need to make corresponding 40-man moves to create space for Green and the promotion of left-hander Conner Menez.

Green entered the professional ranks as a third-round pick of the Phillies in 2012, but the Northern California native left the organization as a free agent last offseason to sign with the Giants. Since then, the right-handed 25-year-old has slashed an outstanding .302/.402/.698 with 23 home runs in 264 plate appearances. Even in the offense-driven Pacific Coast League, Green’s production has been 55 percent better than average, according to FanGraphs’ wRC+ metric. It has also been markedly superior to the numbers Green put up in 2018, his first year at the minors’ top level, as he hit .248/.312/.412 (108 wRC+) with three HRs in 138 PA to conclude his Phillies tenure.

The promotion of Green will give a suddenly contending Giants team more corner depth in the wake of starting third baseman Evan Longoria’s placement on the injured list this week. Although Pablo Sandoval has taken the reins at the hot corner in Longoria’s absence, it’s up in the air how much longer the Kung Fu Panda will remain with the organization. After all, Sandoval’s an impending free agent on a team that might sell by the July 31 trade deadline, despite its recent success.
