Service Time Update: Gordon, Snider

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 18, 2009 at 3:40pm CDT

Updates on a pair of former first round picks…

  • The Royals sent Alex Gordon to the minors, according to Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star. If the demotion lasts for more than 20 days, the Royals will have delayed his free agency by a season. Gordon, who was expected to become a free agent after 2012, may not become a free agent until after the 2013 season.
  • It's no surprise to see the Jays call Travis Snider up. As we showed earlier in the month, the Jays had the chance to prevent Snider from reaching Super Two status by keeping him in the minors for a couple extra weeks. They took advantage of the opportunity and Snider will likely be a few days short of Super Two status after 2011.

Odds And Ends: Jays, White Sox, Posey

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 18, 2009 at 11:39am CDT

Some links for the morning…

  • GM J.P. Ricciardi tells Rob Bradford of WEEI.com that being good isn't enough in the AL East. The Blue Jays have to be great.
  • White Sox GM Kenny Williams told Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune that he's unhappy with his team, which trails the Tigers by 2.0 games in the AL Central. "We're underachievers," he said.
  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle hears that the Giants have no plans to call Buster Posey up this season. They just drafted the catcher last year, so GM Brian Sabean says "there's no rush."

Miscellaneous Draft Pick Signings

By Tim Dierkes | August 17, 2009 at 10:22pm CDT

With apologies to the players lumped into this post, I'm going to toss the notable non-first round signings here.

  • The Orioles signed second-rounder Mychal Givens, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.  Givens is a high school shortstop.  Baseball America's Jim Callis says he gets $800K (slot for the #54 overall pick is $663K according to BA).
  • The A's signed high school lefty and seventh-round pick Ian Krol, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus (via Twitter).  Krol missed the 2009 season due to an alcohol-related suspension, as reported by the Chicago Tribune's Matt Lynch.  He'll get $925K, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America.
  • The Mets signed second-round lefty Steven Matz for $895K, according to ESPN's Keith Law.  Slot: $507K.
  • The Blue Jays failed to sign lefty Boras client James Paxton, chosen 37th overall, reports BP's Kevin Goldstein.  That was one of the compensation picks for A.J. Burnett.

Blue Jays Sign Jake Marisnick

By Mike Axisa | August 17, 2009 at 5:34pm CDT

According to his Twitter account, Blue Jays third rounder Jake Marisnick has signed with the team. ESPN's Keith Law says he'll receive a $1MM bonus, considerably more than MLB's recommended slot of roughly $310K.

Could The Jays Increase Payroll?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 17, 2009 at 3:58pm CDT

The Jays have cut costs this month by trading away Alex Rios and Scott Rolen. Now, Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail hears that ownership may allow for more spending, but only if Paul Beeston stays on as team president and CEO. (Hat Tip: Drunk Jays Fans) The club would then allow Beeston to hire a veteran baseball person to continue grooming Blue Jays assistant GM Alex Anthopoulos.

Heyman On Red Sox, Davis, Padilla

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 17, 2009 at 12:43pm CDT

Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Red Sox are "thought to have offered a five-prospect package of [Clay] Buchholz, Michael Bowden, Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and a position player" for Roy Halladay. The club apparently offered the Mariners an even better deal for Felix Hernandez. Here are the rest of Heyman's rumors:

  • The Brewers offered nothing more than salary relief for Doug Davis, so the D'Backs held on.
  • There's a decent chance the Blue Jays will find a new GM. As one exec points out, no one gets to rebuild twice without making the playoffs.
  • The Rangers gave up on Vicente Padilla because they consider him a bad teammate.

Law On Miller, Purke, Jays

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 17, 2009 at 12:08pm CDT

ESPN.com's Keith Law wrote last night that the Cardinals seem to be on their way to signing top pick Shelby Miller, who could receive top-ten money. Signing the righty would be "a huge coup" for the Cards, Law says. Here are the rest of his rumors:

  • The Rangers and Matt Purke are still over $1MM apart so the club isn't optimistic about signing the first rounder.
  • The Blue Jays have a good shot at signing third rounder Jake Marisnick, a high schooler who had first round potential heading into the spring.
  • The Jays aren't likely to sign Canadian lefty Jake Eliopoulos.

Draft Updates: Jays, Rays, Mariners, Padres

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 17, 2009 at 11:35am CDT

Its' still quiet on the Stephen Strasburg front, but we have other draft updates with less than 12 hours remaining for teams to sign their picks.

  • Baseball America's Jim Callis says the Jays signed outfielder K.C. Hobson for $500k, more than three times what MLB recommends giving sixth rounders.
  • Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times says the Rays will have to examine Levon Washington's shoulder carefully today, since the top pick is coming off surgery.
  • Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times imagines what would happen if the Mariners and Nationals both failed to sign their top picks this year.
  • Andy Marks of the Ocala Star-Banner reports that the Padres agreed to sign fourth rounder Keyvius Sampson for second round money, though the specifics of the deal aren't yet known.

Draft Updates: Miller, Yankees, Jays

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 17, 2009 at 9:34am CDT

More updates on the final day to sign draft picks…

  • Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that top Cardinals pick Shelby Miller is in St. Louis for a physical. GM John Mozeliak says talks are "moving in a positive direction" and one official says the sides could end up agreeing on a deal worth about $3.25MM.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo hears that the Cards are making progress with Miller, but doubts they'll hand out $3.25MM.
  • Mayo reports that first rounders Tyler Matzek (Rockies) and Matt Purke (Rangers) all have substantial gaps to overcome if they're going to sign today.
  • Zack Wheeler and the Giants are now less than $1MM apart, Mayo reports.
  • Jim Callis of Baseball America reports that the Yankees signed righty Caleb Cotham for $675k, which is more than four times the recommended limit for a fifth rounder.
  • Callis reports that the Blue Jays signed 18th rounder Daniel Webb for $450k, triple the recommended ceiling for late round picks.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Deadline, Rios, Yanks

By Cork Gaines | August 14, 2009 at 1:45pm CDT

On this date two years ago, the Yankees and Padres failed to reach an agreement on a trade for Kei Igawa after San Diego claimed the pitcher on waivers. The Yankees also chose not to let Igawa go to the Padres for just the waiver claim. Since then Igawa has made two starts for the Yankees and has spent the entire '09 season in Triple-A. With several teams active in the waiver market this season, let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • Around the Majors takes a look at how the deadline deals have worked so far.
  • The Blue Jay Hunter looks at what the Alex Rios move could mean for the Jays moving forward.
  • The Sports Bank gives 11 reasons why Alex Rios was a good pick up for the White Sox.
  • A Game Of Inches argues that the White Sox would have been better off acquiring a minor league center fielder.
  • UmpBump makes the case that the Alex Rios move was good for both sides.
  • Josh's Thoughts takes a look at what the acquisition of Alex Rios by the White Sox means for the Twins and the rest of the AL Central.
  • The Pinstriper imagines what the Yankees roster would look like today had they signed Mike Lowell in '07.
  • Jorge Says No! says the Jays still need to move Vernon Wells if they ever want to move forward.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com. If you have a suggestion for this feature, Cork can be reached here, and followed on Twitter here.
