Buehrle Contract Talks At Stalemate

By Tim Dierkes | July 5, 2007 at 7:23am CDT

After Kenny Williams went public with negotiations the other day,  the only logical step for Jeff Berry (Mark Buehrle’s agent) was to do the same.  Williams had explained the gap as an 18-month period where Buehrle would lack no-trade protection.  Berry now describes that as 20 months, and says his client won’t budge on it.  Why should he?  He’s already about to sign a well below-market contract.  The White Sox can’t have their cake and eat it too.

Furthermore, Berry confirmed that if Buehrle is traded he will certainly exercise his right to free agency after the season.  He could give his new team extra consideration but he’ll still hit the open market.

Most fans would not consider Buehrle’s request unreasonable, so the White Sox will still have some ugly PR if this thing falls through over this issue.

Orlando Hudson Expects To Leave Arizona

By Tim Dierkes | July 4, 2007 at 1:51pm CDT

In a radio interview Monday afternoon, Diamondbacks second baseman Orlando Hudson indicated that he doesn’t expect to remain with the team for his career or even the next few years.  His agent has at least had extension discussions with the D’Backs’ front office though.  Hudson is eligible for free agency after the 2008 season.

2006 was a breakout season for Hudson, but he just keeps getting better.  He’s going to obliterate his career high in walks, and he’s hitting for more power than ever.  And he’s known as one of the best defensive second basemen in the game.  The only problem?  Since joining the Diamondbacks, Hudson has hit .311/.391/.495 at home but .273/.341/.421 on the road.

Hudson makes $3.9MM this year, and during this upcoming winter he can be compared to his peers in the arbitration process.  I’m not an expert on that but I think that’s how it works.  Comparing Hudson to Chase Utley – who will make $7.5MM in ’08 – is a stretch.  But I would not be shocked to see Hudson earning $5-6MM next season.  He’ll be 30 years old at that point.

Alberto Callaspo, Mark Reynolds, and maybe even Scott Hairston are potential replacement options, if the Diamondbacks are willing to take a hit on defense.  Josh Byrnes may elect to trade Hudson this offseason.  The White Sox, Braves, Mets, or Astros could be interested.  The Rockies wanted to trade for him way back in ’02.  The Yankees and Mariners apparently inquired back in ’03.  The Royals and Rangers expressed interest in ’05.

Hudson seems like an interesting character.  Funny story – he was sent to Triple A in ’01 for saying J.P. Ricciardi looked "like a pimp."  (Though to be fair, Hudson was also having a poor spring).  Regardless, his six-year old minor "makeup issue" pales in comparison to Callaspo’s.

White Sox Outfield Wide Open For 2008

By Tim Dierkes | July 4, 2007 at 9:40am CDT

The White Sox may have to hold open tryouts to find outfielders for the 2008 season.  Right now, they’ve got nothing.

  • Jermaine Dye is all but a lock to leave via free agency, unless he’s traded first.
  • Ozzie Guillen publicly dissed Scott Podsednik, calling him "unreliable."  Pods is a nontender candidate, just like last year.  I supported the decision to keep him at that time, but not to rely on him.
  • The hope is that Ryan Sweeney, who will be 23 next season, can hit enough to keep his head above water and play acceptable center field defense.  He doesn’t have the bat for a corner.  He’s only had 80 ABs in the bigs and has a .776 OPS in Triple A.  He’s anything but a sure thing, though the team’s best position player prospect.
  • The best outfield prospect aside from Sweeney was probably Aaron Cunningham, who the White Sox recently sent to Arizona for Danny Richar.  Richar is probably Tadahito Iguchi’s replacement, but Cunningham could develop more power and make the Sox look bad.  Williams already shipped off Chris Young to Arizona.
  • There’s Jerry Owens, who will be 27 and has no power.  It might be a stretch to call him a starting outfielder, and you can’t have both he and Sweeney in there at the same time.  I mean, technically you can put Sweeney in right but that’s a lousy outfield.
  • Andy Gonzalez, Rob Mackowiak, Pablo Ozuna, Luis Terrero, Brian Anderson, Darin Erstad…none of these guys have business starting in a Major League outfield for a contending team.  I can see the Sox re-signing Erstad, but he has a .652 OPS this year.

Williams needs to come up with at least one Major League quality outfielder this month via trade, because he pretty much has nothing for next year.  Nate Silver imagined a fun outfield of Josh Fields, Sweeney, and Japanese import Kosuke Fukudome for next year.  Signing a big bat like Fukudome seems almost an imperative.  The Sox will have plenty of options on the free agent market, including Eric Byrnes, Torii Hunter, Aaron Rowand, and Mike Cameron.  It’d be superb if Williams could snag one top prospect type, such as Lastings Milledge, Matt Kemp, or Carlos Quentin.

Rosenthal: Piazza Could Be Shopped

By Tim Dierkes | July 4, 2007 at 12:13am CDT

Ken Rosenthal has another column up tonight.  The lead: the emergence of Jack Cust may cause the A’s to shop Mike Piazza.  The problem is that Piazza may be limited to DH duties.  Rosenthal names the Mariners, Twins, and Angels as teams lacking at the position, though all those clubs could be in the playoff chase with Oakland.

Billy Beane might find additional flexibility if Piazza is able to play first base.  He played 64 games there in 2004 for the Mets.  However, this might not sit well with Piazza.  It was thought that his defensive struggles at first in ’04 carried over to his offensive performance at times.  Moving Piazza to the NL probably wouldn’t work, even if he’s able to get behind the plate a couple of times each week.  Since only a contender would consider acquiring Piazza, Beane is probably stuck with him.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Buehrle, Bourn

By Tim Dierkes | July 3, 2007 at 9:11pm CDT

Just got back from watching the new Transformers movie.  I found it disappointing.  It was a bit cheesier and for-kids than I expected or the ads lead you to believe.  Shia LaBeouf was a bright spot but most of the dialogue makes you wince.  The plot was annoying and I got a little CGI’d out by the end.  I know, what do you expect from Michael Bay.  But I liked The Island.  Just read some reviews of it; 90% of them said something like "This will please fanboys, but I didn’t like it."  "Fanboy" seems a required word for reviewing the movie.  Well, I am not a fanboy of Transformers (my parents bought me Gobots* instead) but I still don’t recommend the movie.  On to baseball.

Ken Rosenthal’s latest column is a little lacking in terms of fresh trade rumors to dissect.  Instead, he’s more focused on informed speculation.

  • Rosenthal believes the White Sox and Mark Buehrle should be able to bridge the gap, which amounts to 18 months of no-trade protection.  That’s the general feeling; it will be nice to see a fan favorite stay.
  • Rosenthal says Kenny Williams has talked to roughly 20 teams about his starting pitchers in one way or another.  Interestingly, he confirms the recent radio rumor that the D-Rays inquired about Buehrle.  Williams has also discussed Jose Contreras and Javier Vazquez with Tampa Bay.  I’ll say it again: the Devil Rays should be contenders in 2008.
  • Trade speculation: Phillies outfielder Michael Bourn to the Rangers for Akinori Otsuka.  Such a move, however, would increase reliance on Pat Burrell and leave the Phillies short-staffed in the outfield for 2008.  Rosenthal believes Bourn could develop into a Juan Pierre type, sans the noodle arm.

*The Gobots’ theme song is awesome.  It’s basically "The Gobots, the Gobots" repeatedly.

Salomon Torres Requests Trade

By Tim Dierkes | July 3, 2007 at 1:11am CDT

Pirates reliever Salomon Torres believes Dave Littlefield tricked him during their contract talks in April of 2006.  Torres did not use an agent.  To hear him tell it, he had a verbal agreement with Littlefield that the Pirates would pay to rent one of Torres’s baseball academies in the Dominican Republic.  That never happened, so Torres filed a grievance.

Now Torres feels that because of the grievance, he is being punished by the Bucs by means of a longer-than-necessary rehab assignment for his elbow.  He’s fed up with the team and would like to be traded.

Torres has about $1.3MM left on his contract this year and $3.2MM for ’08.  His deal also has a $3.75MM club option for ’09 with a $300K buyout attached.  Torres can earn another $900K in incentives.

Torres is now 35, and he logged a whopping 280 relief innings during 2004-06.  He’d be a fairly risky acquisition.   However, with some of the silly reliever deals handed out this offseason, he’s still got trade value.

Omar Minaya Trade Profile (Expos)

By Tim Dierkes | July 3, 2007 at 12:58am CDT

Omar Minaya has done so much wheeling and dealing through the years that I’ve decided to break up his trade profile into two parts – Expos and Mets.  The vast difference between the two situations is another reason to separate the posts.  Click here to Download new_york_mets_minaya.xls, an Excel file with Minaya’s entire trade history.

The 2002-04 Expos were owned by the other 29 baseball teams, with Minaya at the helm.  It was a unique and bizarre situation.  Probably a conflict of interest, too – Bud Selig did not allow the playoff-contending 2003 Expos to add September call-ups that year because it was deemed too expensive.

Anyway, Minaya made 25 trades in his three years as GM of the Expos.  Let’s analyze some of the bigger deals.

  • 3/23/02: Sent Guillermo Mota to the Dodgers for Matt Herges.  Since Mota went on to have a couple of dominant seasons for L.A., we’ll give the advantage here to Dan Evans, then the Dodgers’ GM.  Herges was later spun by Minaya to the Pirates for Chris Young.  I still can’t credit Minaya though as he subsequently gave Young to John Hart and the Rangers for junk in April of ’04.
  • 3/25/02: Sent Jason Bay and Jim Serrano to the Mets for Lou Collier.  I’d dock some points from Minaya for this one or give Steve Phillips props, but no one respected Jason Bay in 2002.  He was traded two more times before ending up a Pirate.
  • 7/11/02: Sent Carl Pavano, Graeme Lloyd, and others to the Marlins for Cliff Floyd, Wilton Guerrero, Claudio Vargas, and cash.  Floyd was quickly spun to Boston for Sun Woo Kim and Seung Song.  Essentially Minaya gave up Pavano and Floyd for Vargas.  Vargas never did much in Montreal, so I’ll give this one to Larry Beinfest and Mike Port (Red Sox GM at that time).
  • 7/28/02: The big one: Acquired RHP Bartolo Colon and minor league RHP Tim Drew from Cleveland in exchange for 1B Lee Stevens, minor league SS Brandon Phillips, minor league LHP Cliff Lee and minor league OF Grady Sizemore.  Even with the future of the franchise in question and a desire to win now, this was just too much to give up for Colon.  You have to give this one to Mark Shapiro.
  • 1/15/03: Big three-team deal: Acquired RHP Orlando Hernandez and RHP Rocky Biddle, INF/OF Jeff Liefer and an undisclosed amount of cash from the Chicago White Sox in a three-team trade involving the New York Yankees, while sending RHP Bartolo Colon and INF Jorge Nunez to the White Sox.  I lack the full context of this deal, but it appears that MLB wanted Minaya to trade Colon because of his $6MM salary.  I’m a little skeptical of that though because El Duque was paid $4.1MM in ’03.  Biddle and Liefer were already looking like failed prospects at the time, so Kenny Williams won there.  The Expos also missed the boat on El Duque, as he soon developed shoulder problems and needed rotator cuff surgery.  He never pitched a game for Montreal and was non-tendered the following winter.
  • 3/24/03: Traded RHP Jim Brower and a player to be named for RHP Livan Hernandez, catcher Edwards Guzman and cash.  This is clear ownage of Brian Sabean, as Hernandez became the team’s ace and the premiere innings-eater in baseball for a three-year span.
  • 12/4/03: Traded RHP Javier Vazquez for the Yankees’ 1B Nick Johnson, OF Juan Rivera and LHP Randy Choate.  Just an awesome deal for Omar, maximizing the return for Vazquez.  A huge bounty was expected though as Vazquez was 27 and coming off his career year.  As you’ll later see, Choate became John Patterson.  So that’s three bona fide solid big leaguers for Vazquez.
  • 12/15/03: Traded C Michael Barrett to the A’s for minor league pitcher Jonathan Brett and a player to be named.  You can dog Omar for this one, though Billy Beane turned around and sent Barrett to the Cubs  for junk.  Plus, Barrett had been terrible in ’03.  Credit goes to Jim Hendry for recognizing his talent.
  • 1/5/04: Minaya acquired two still-useful players from the Indians in Ryan Church and Maicer Izturis for reliever Scott Stewart.  Stewart, a 28 year-old southpaw, had posted two fine seasons for the Expos but flamed out shortly thereafter.  Perhaps not full revenge on Mark Shapiro for the Colon deal but it was a start.
  • 3/25/04: Snagged John Patterson for Randy Choate.  Patterson’s pretty messed up these days but you can’t deny the value of 198 innings of 3.13 ball in 2005.  That’s more than Choate ever game the Diamondbacks; advantage Minaya.
  • 7/18/04: Acquired RHP Jon Rauch and RHP Gary Majewski from the White Sox for OF Carl Everett and cash.  Jurassic Carl was always pretty average for the White Sox, while the Nats’ are still enjoying the fine work of Rauch.  Doesn’t top Kenny Williams’ Colon fleecing (ewww, gross) but it’s a start.  And Majewski?  Jim Bowden later used him as a major piece in order to acquire Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez, and Ryan Wagner.  Another fine move by Omar.
  • 7/31/04: Another three-team blockbuster: Traded SS Orlando Cabrera to the Red Sox. Acquired SS Alex Gonzalez, minor league RHP Francis Beltran and minor league 3B Brendan Harris from the Cubs.  Beltran never panned out, but Minaya saw something in Harris that many GMs missed.  Harris found his way to Tampa Bay and is currently sixth in VORP among rookies this year.

Looking at this progression of trades, you can see Minaya kind of learning his way.  He got burned quite a bit on his trades from 2002 through the Colon to the White Sox deal.  But then Minaya went on a major winning streak and managed to acquire some talent for the Montreal/Washington franchise on his way out.  Your thoughts, and did I misinterpret any of these trades?  We’ll cover Omar’s Mets deals next time.

Could Jays Shop Burnett?

By Tim Dierkes | July 2, 2007 at 11:35pm CDT

A.J. Burnett timed his contract year perfectly, reaching career highs with 32 starts and 209 innings in 2005 for the Marlins.  He even would’ve made another start that year, but he ripped the team publicly in September and the Marlins asked him to leave.

The outburst didn’t diminish interest in Burnett during the 2005-06 offseason; reportedly 22 teams expressed interest.  The Cardinals and Nationals submitted offers, but Toronto won with five years and $55MM.  The deal was panned at the time, but the money looks reasonable now that the pitching market has shifted upward.

Burnett’s stay in Toronto over the past 1.5 years has been laden with DL trips.  This time he got a cortisone shot in his sore shoulder and hopes to return shortly before the July 31st trade deadline.  Jeff Blair of The Globe and Mail believes J.P. Ricciardi might try to cut ties with Burnett this month, if he can convince some team to gamble on his nasty stuff.

Here’s the contract situation.  He has about $6MM left this year, and $12MM in ’08.  At that point, Burnett can opt out of the contract.  Prior to 2009 season, Burnett must decide whether he can top a two-year, $24MM deal on the open market.  That will depend mainly on his health in 2008.

Could Ricciardi really convince a GM to gamble on Burnett’s health and also bear the risk of being stuck with him through 2010?  Not likely.  Not even if Burnett comes back and tosses a no-hitter on July 30th.  The money would be tricky – perhaps Ricciardi would agree to shoulder some of the load if Burnett chooses to honor his contract for 2009-10 (for that would imply that he’s not really worth $24MM over that span).

Billy Beane is definitely Ricciardi’s favorite trading partner, but Beane has his own Burnett to deal with in Rich Harden.

Buehrle Extension Lives

By Tim Dierkes | July 2, 2007 at 9:20pm CDT

UPDATE: Kenny Williams spoke to the press tonight; the White Sox have offered Buehrle no-trade protection except for an 18-month span.  It seems likely that the two sides reach an agreement.

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times believes tonight could be Mark Buehrle’s last start as a member of the White Sox.  His teammates have been collecting memorabilia, and extra support is expected tonight at U.S. Cellular.  Hard to believe that this thing died over a no-trade clause.  Perhaps Buehrle wanted a full and the Sox would only give a partial.  But how can they justify passing on a well below-market commitment of 4/54?  The Sox are definitely built to win in 2008.  Everyone Buster Olney talked to is stunned as well.

Dylan Hernandez and Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times reported this morning on discussions between the Dodgers and White Sox about Buehrle.  The Sox want outfielder Matt Kemp in a trade.  They may even be asking for more, perhaps Chad Billingsley or Jonathan Broxton.  We know that Kenny Williams’ starting point was each team’s two best prospects.  If the clubs ultimately settle on Kemp for Buehrle straight up – something the Dodgers hope to avoid – Williams will have done well.  He needs an outfielder he can build around.  The L.A. Daily News, however, says no deal is close and the Dodgers haven’t even talked to the White Sox since before extension negotiations died.

Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune believes the Mets, Braves, Red Sox, Brewers, and Dodgers will all now increase their interest in Buehrle.  And Lance Berkman of the Astros is now campaigning for him too.  Cowley mentions in his article that the Mets’ interest is now heating up.  And if you’re wondering what the Mariners might be able to offer, check out Dave Cameron’s take.

One long shot possibility: this is all just a noise by the White Sox and they’ll make an extension announcement before Buehrle takes the mound.  That’s the scenario Sox fans are hoping for at this point.

MetsBlog On Cordero, Rauch, Milledge

By Tim Dierkes | July 2, 2007 at 5:50pm CDT

Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog says recent buzz in Washington, D.C. has linked the Mets to relievers Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch.  He also adds that Nationals manager and former Mets’ third base coach Manny Acta is a fan of Lastings Milledge.

Milledge suffered from a sprained foot ligament for most of the season, but finally returned to the Triple A lineup on Friday. [Correction: Milledge is still on rehab and won’t return to the Triple A New Orleans club for another week or two.]  It figures that many GMs will try to pry away the 22 year-old this month.  It’s been said that Minaya wouldn’t trade him for a rental, but Cordero and Rauch are both under contract for a while.  Both relievers have strikeout rates around seven per nine innings; the Mets might prefer someone more dominant.

Has Omar Minaya ever struck a deal with Jim Bowden?  Sure.  Back in June of ’02, when Minaya was GM of the Expos and Bowden was in charge of the Reds.  Minaya sent lefty Bruce Chen to the Reds for reliever Jim Brower.
