Offseason Outlook: Houston Astros

By Tim Dierkes | October 10, 2008 at 11:24am CDT

Next up in the Offseason Outlook series, the Astros.  Their likely 2009 commitments:

C – J.R. Towles – $400K
C – Humberto Quintero – $405K+
1B – Lance Berkman – $14.5MM
2B – Kaz Matsui – $5MM
SS – Miguel Tejada – $13MM
3B – Ty Wigginton – $4.35MM+
IF – Geoff Blum – $1.25MM
IF – David Newhan – $575K+
LF – Carlos Lee – $18.5MM
CF – Michael Bourn – $400K
RF – Hunter Pence – $400K
OF – Darin Erstad – $1.75MM
OF – Reggie Abercrombie – $400K

SP – Roy Oswalt – $14MM
SP – Wandy Rodriguez – $451K+
SP – Brian Moehler – $2.3MM
SP – Brandon Backe – $800K+
SP – Alberto Arias – $400K

RP – Jose Valverde – $4.7MM+
RP – Geoff Geary – $1.125MM+
RP – Tim Byrdak – $400K+
RP – Wesley Wright – $400K
RP – Fernando Nieve – $400K
RP – Chris Sampson – $401K
RP –

That’s roughly $86MM committed, plus arbitration raises to Wigginton, Rodriguez, Backe, Valverde, Geary, and others.  Those raises could put the team past $95MM.  The Astros began the season at $88.9MM.  Fortunately, GM Ed Wade has payroll flexibility this winter.

Wade will begin the offseason by attempting to re-sign Randy Wolf, Doug Brocail, and LaTroy Hawkins.  That alone could result in ’09 salaries of $15MM+.  Then Wade might replace Quintero with a more established backup catcher, which could cost another million bucks.  So we’re looking at something around $110MM to keep the current group intact.  It’s hard to see the ’Stros plunking down an additional $10MM+ on another veteran starter.

It’s possible to envision the pitching staff working out, but the offense is a question mark.  Several factors needed for improvement: second-year success for Towles, more Matsui, Lee and Wigginton, and a higher batting average from Pence.  Center field seems likely to remain an offensive void.

Mike Cameron’s Option

By Tim Dierkes | October 10, 2008 at 10:17am CDT

From ESPN’s Buster Olney:

The Brewers have five days after the World Series to tell Mike Cameron whether they’re picking up the option; to date, there has been no official conversation between the team and the player, and it figures there won’t be until Doug Melvin’s situation is resolved.

Melvin has one year left on his contract, and the Brewers plan to offer him an extension.

Cameron has a $10MM option with a $750K buyout.  At the time of the signing (January), it seemed likely to stand as a one-year deal.  Cameron began the season with a 25-game suspension for using a banned stimulant.  The Yankees might have passed due to concerns over paying both Cameron and Johan Santana, according to Ken Rosenthal.

Cameron, 36 in January, hit .243/.331/.477 in 508 plate appearances.  He also saved eight bases defensively compared to the average center fielder.  After such a fine year, he’s an easy choice at one-year, $9.25MM.

Burnett’s Opt-Out Decision Comes First

By Tim Dierkes | October 10, 2008 at 9:36am CDT

Cathal Kelly of the Toronto Star talked to A.J. Burnett’s agent, Darek Braunecker.  Braunecker says Burnett has until fifteen days after the World Series to decide whether to opt out, and there will be no contract discussions with the Blue Jays until that decision is made.  So now the Jays play the waiting game…even though it’s obvious Burnett will opt out.

Kelly says Toronto is preparing an offer that would equate to four years, $54MM.  That’s unlikely to get it done, though Braunecker says years are more important than dollars.  His words:

"The primary issue would be how many years they would be willing to go.  It’s difficult to get five years on a pitcher…but if indeed he says he wants another five-year deal, we may have to go out on the market to get that."

Burnett expects Braunecker to tell him what he’s worth, and it’s probably five years and more than $80MM.

Free Agent Home Run Leaders

By Tim Dierkes | October 9, 2008 at 4:03pm CDT

12 free agents had 20+ home runs in 2008.  Here’s the leaderboard:

1. Adam Dunn – 40
2. Manny Ramirez – 37
3. Pat Burrell – 33
3. Mark Teixeira – 33
5. Jason Giambi – 32
6. Raul Ibanez – 23
7. Milton Bradley – 22
8. Casey Blake – 21
9. Jim Edmonds – 20
9. Bobby Abreu – 20
9. Kevin Millar – 20
9. Eric Hinske – 20

Honorable mentions: Jerry Hairston Jr. (.487 SLG), Fernando Tatis (.484), Joe Crede (.460), and Orlando Hudson (.450).  The trade market features twelve 20 home run bats in my estimation: Prince Fielder, Aubrey Huff, Mike Jacobs, Dan Uggla, Edwin Encarnacion, Adrian Beltre, Adam LaRoche, Matt Holliday, J.J. Hardy, Melvin Mora, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Garrett Atkins.

Odds and Ends: Moore, Manny, Hudson

By Tim Dierkes | October 9, 2008 at 11:06am CDT

Reading material for Thursday…

  • NBC San Diego reports that John Moores plans to sell his 49% of the Padres as part of his divorce settlement.
  • Derrick Goold looks at the many teams that might consider Rafael Furcal, including the Cardinals.  Imagine the kind of contract he’d be looking at if he’d been healthy all year.
  • I did a Q&A with Sox and Pinstripes recently.
  • According to Mariners president Chuck Armstrong, the new GM will have less power and a smaller payroll than Bill Bavasi.  The list of candidates is down to ten.
  • MLB.com’s Dick Kaegel talked to Royals GM Dayton Moore, who wants to add an offensive player (a hitter, not a guy who offends).  Moore won’t be moving Joakim Soria to the rotation, though some in the organization support it.  Also, MLB Interviews chatted Royals with Joe Posnanski of the Kansas City Star.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post sees a parallel between Mike Mussina and Jimmy Key.  Some Yankees officials expect Mussina to file for free agency to keep his options open.
  • In another article, Sherman warns suitors that Manny Ramirez is a "con man."
  • ESPN’s Buster Olney runs through possible destinations for Orlando Hudson, including the Mets, White Sox, Indians, and Angels.
  • Anthony Marenna of DC Metroblog provides an offseason plan for the Nationals, while Jacob Jackson takes on the A’s at Athletics Nation.

By Tim Dierkes | October 9, 2008 at 10:50am CDT

According to a press release at MLB.com, the Twins exercised backup catcher Mike Redmond’s $950K option as expected.  Redmond, 37, hit .287/.321/.333 in 137 plate appearances.

Here is a look at the remaining free agent catchers.

Offseason Outlook: Chicago White Sox

By Tim Dierkes | October 9, 2008 at 9:41am CDT

Next up in our Offseason Outlook series, the White Sox.  Their likely commitments for 2009:

C – A.J. Pierzynski – $6.25MM
C – Toby Hall – $2.25MM (club option, $150K buyout)
1B – Paul Konerko – $12MM
2B – Chris Getz – $400K
SS – Alexei Ramirez – $1.1MM
3B – Josh Fields – $400K
IF –
LF – Carlos Quentin – $400K
CF – Brian Anderson – $400K
RF – Jermaine Dye – $11.5MM
OF – DeWayne Wise – $400K+
OF/1B – Nick Swisher – $5.3MM
DH – Jim Thome – $13MM

SP – Mark Buehrle – $14MM
SP – Javier Vazquez – $11.5MM
SP – John Danks – $400K
SP – Gavin Floyd – $400K
SP – Clayton Richard – $400K

RP – Bobby Jenks – $550K+
RP – Scott Linebrink – $4.5MM
RP – Octavio Dotel – $6MM
RP – Matt Thornton – $1.325MM
RP – Boone Logan – $405K
RP – D.J. Carrasco – $400K+
RP – Ehren Wassermann – $400K

Buyouts: Ken Griffey Jr. – $2MM

Other commitments: Jose Contreras – $10MM, Mike MacDougal – $2.65MM

I’m not sure if any of the $22MM received from the Phillies will go toward Thome’s 2009 salary.  I’m also unsure if Chicago’s portion of Junior’s buyout goes toward ’09 payroll.  To play it safe I will include all of that.  That brings us to $108MM plus arbitration raises, notably to Jenks.  So figure a little north of $110MM committed.  The Sox began the year with a $121MM payroll, though GM Ken Williams will not necessarily use every last dollar.  It seems that the Sox can afford one decent free agent if that’s Williams’ preference.

The Sox have talked about wanting to add speed at the top and bottom of the lineup.  A guy with a strong OBP would surely be preferable.  Willy Taveras, Juan Pierre, Ichiro Suzuki, Brian Roberts, Orlando Hudson, Chone Figgins, Randy Winn, Cesar Izturis, Bobby Abreu, and Coco Crisp may be available to varying degrees.  Roberts would be perfect, but the Orioles may still want young pitching or a shortstop.  Winn or Crisp could be easier to acquire.  The Angels may prefer to keep Figgins.

There’s talk of moving one of the pricier vets, maneuvering past no-trade clauses.  Dye would be appealing to many clubs; Abreu could be signed as a replacement.  Another option: shop Jenks.  Three years of Jenks is quite valuable, and he’d make an appealing alternative to signing Francisco Rodriguez or Brian Fuentes.

At this point we have learned to just sit back and watch Williams work…he has proven he’s unpredictable and very good at his job.

Players Elect Free Agency

By Tim Dierkes | October 9, 2008 at 8:54am CDT

Several players refused outright assignments to Triple A recently, electing free agency.  Let me know if I missed anyone of note.

  • Jolbert Cabrera played second base, shortstop, third base, left field, and right field for the Reds this year.  He’ll be 36 in December; he hit .252/.310/.400 in 126 plate appearances.  He spent time in Japan a few years back.
  • Dave Borkowski, 31, tossed 36 innings of relief for the Astros with a 7.50 ERA.  Home runs were a problem this year.
  • Jose Castillo, 27, hit .246/.292/.376 in 455 plate appearances with the Giants and Astros.  He played second base, shortstop, third base, and right field this year.

Shapiro Outlines Indians’ Needs

By Tim Dierkes | October 8, 2008 at 2:02pm CDT

Indians GM Mark Shapiro spoke to the press today.  A few notes:

  • Shapiro does not feel comfortable with his team’s upper-level starting pitching, which consists of Cliff Lee and Fausto Carmona (and maybe Jake Westbrook when he’s ready).  The Indians may have $15MM or so to work with, but Shapiro wouldn’t say whether he’d lean more toward free agency or trades.
  • Other needs: closer and infield help.  We ran through most of the candidates in the Offseason Outlook.  Given the flexibility of Jhonny Peralta and Asdrubal Cabrera, Shapiro could look for help at second or third base.
  • Shapiro hinted that Casey Blake could be a good fit back with the Tribe.  He won’t be pursuing Manny Ramirez.
