Reds Sign Jose Arredondo To Minor League Deal

By Mike Axisa | January 22, 2010 at 5:05pm CDT

The Reds have signed righthander Jose Arredondo to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, tweets MLB.com's Matthew Leach. The invite to camp is nothing more than a formality, because Arredondo is due to have Tommy John surgery soon and won't be able to pitch at all in 2010.

Arredondo, 26 in March, has a 3.48 ERA with an impressive 8.7 K/9 in 106 big league relief innings. The Angels non-tendered him back in December after we learned that he would need surgery. Because he's going to miss the entire season, Cincinnati made the move with an eye towards 2011 and beyond.

why didnt the Angels do this? I know he was due a raise, even with surgery coming, but resigning him on a minor league deal? Instead, they lose one of their most talented arms… Im not even an Angels fan and Im a little angry. Just a dumb move from the FO

Go to his wiki page, apparently there was a discord between the team and the player.

        ah, that makes more sense.

Still, I would think a professional franchise would try to put a discord aside when dealing with a very talented young pitcher..

Not an Angels fan? Why not? They must not be trendy enough for you.

At least I’m from Massachusetts and I don’t root for 2 teams that are 3000 miles apart.

Cheap salary, practically no risk all reward.
    Bravo.

I’m generally not very high on most of the moves the Reds make, they don’t usually make a lot of sense, but this seems to be a pretty good move on their part. Every team needs to add talent via every possible channel and picking up a guy like Arredondo, behavioral issues and TJ surgery or not, seems like a decent gamble. I will say that if Dusty doesn’t slash and burn half the arms in the organization they could have a pretty talented staff in a couple years. As with everything Cincinnati though, I’ll believe it when I see it. Things seem to have a way of not working out there.

Yeah dude…You have room to criticize the Reds when the Cubs are just awesome year in and year out. When’s the last time the Cubs won the World Series?

Good move by the Reds, I liked him a lot and he does have a ton of talent, I didn’t like that the non tendered him after 1 bad season, but they must have their reasons. Any who good luck to him and the Reds

Hes a beast no doubt, but that splitter and the way he throws is not friendly.

Jose was great as a halo two years ago (looked poised to become the closer with Franky Rodriguez leaving), but became too much of a risk last season. I wish him luck in Cincinnati.
