Washburn Turns Down “Small Offer” From Seattle

By Mark Polishuk | April 1, 2010 at 6:23pm CDT

THURSDAY, 6:23pm: Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star notes that Royals officials have yet to substantiate rumors of the team's interest in Washburn. Dutton adds that one club official said Kansas City's major league payroll is already $1.5MM over budget.

12:22pm: SI's Jon Heyman says the Royals are "believed to be offering significantly more money" to Washburn than the Mariners, but the lefty prefers Seattle.

WEDNESDAY, 5:16pm: AOL Fanhouse's John Hickey reports that the Mariners made a "small offer" to Jarrod Washburn that the left-hander has already turned down.  Hickey says the offer was less than the one-year, $1.5MM deal that the team made with Erik Bedard in February.

Given Seattle's need for starting pitching (especially in the wake of Cliff Lee's injury), Washburn and agent Scott Boras must feel they can get more out of the M's.  We know that Washburn turned down a $5MM offer from Minnesota over the winter, so it's likely the Mariners will have to at least offer something closer to that mark.

if the royals have learned anything from jose guillen, et al. it’s that throwing big dollars at past-their-prime veterans is basically a 100% win guarantee. take it to the bank, drayton.

having said that, if i were the royals, i would only sign this deal if washburn would agree to at least 2 years .

Does this remind anybody of Latrell Sprewell? The clown who turned down a 3 yr/$21M contract with the lowly Wolves, and never played in the NBA again.

I would love it if Washburn signed a multi-year deal with the Royals, if only to read the resulting comments on this site.

Let me quess… Washburn says thats not enough money.

Its clear he ONLY WANTS TO PLAY for the Brewers. There was no LEGITAMITE reason for him to turn down the Twins offer of 1 year for $5million.

Jarrod Washburn: Brew Crew or Bust!! (My quess is he’ll sit out this year)

Actually, it was reported that he (advised by Boras) also turned down a 5 mil offer from the Brewers.

Washburn already screwed the Mariners out of 36 million with that 4 year deal he signed back in ’06. As far as I can see, he should play for Seattle for freakin’ free to try and pay the team back for grossly overplaying his ass for 4 years.

Maybe if the Mets showed and interest other team would look at Him. But seriously maybe the Mets should try and make an offer to him. Make a 1 yr 6- 7 Million plus incentives.
