Yesterday, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reported that the Mets have interest in Brett Myers. Today, Olney explains part of the reason the Mets are considering him over the many other options available. Here are the details and the rest of Olney’s rumors:
- The Mets don’t anticipate having much financial flexibility, so Myers’ $3MM salary has appeal.
- Myers’ former team, the Phillies, would like to add a starter, and they have discussed pursuing difference-making pitchers.
- Executives are divided on whether the Brewers will trade Prince Fielder this July. A team that acquires Prince now would have him for two pennant races before he hits free agency at the end of the 2011 season. GM Doug Melvin won’t find many bidders for his first baseman now, but could attempt to engage more teams by marketing Fielder this winter. No matter what you think of Prince's value, we can safely say that the Brewers will have a hard time keeping him after 2011.
- The White Sox, Rays and Angels could be fits, but rival officials doubt the White Sox would have enough to offer the Brewers unless they offer Daniel Hudson and Gordon Beckham. As MLBTR’s Mark Polishuk pointed out last night, the Angels find themselves in a similar situation.
Getting rid of beckham is fine with me if and only if we extend prince. I would rather trade him for adrian gonzoles. But if we could get a 72 hour window to get an extension worked, even if its olny a 2-3 year extension after the 2011 season then do it. Lilibridge is playing very well right now and just may have figured something out in the minors, omar is playing good right now and might be a good stop gap untill free agency or untill short is ready to come up and play the infield.I dont quite know about hudson simply because we need him to fill that 5th spot right now
I would say Beckham, flowers, marquez, torres, and one other minor leaguer possibly jordan danks or jared mitchell(one of the two simply because only one of them will ever make this team with rios and carlos locked into the out field rotation) and a 72 hr window to sign prince. Considering the an AL team is the only way prince is going to get a big contract it might be the best idea for the whitesox to trade for him, no more andruw “i get hot for 2 series then quit” Jones and Mark “Why am i still on this team” Kotsay as out DH give prince a 3-4 60-80 million dollar extension with lets say 2-3 years worth of club options. that is probably an above market deal for him. And there is probably only 2-3 teams out there that would be dumb enough to over pay him
I dont see this as a match. The Brewers should be going after a young pitcher as the center-peice of the trade. GB is a good young player but all the brewers do is crank out young corner guys. Why would they need a young second/third basemen when their top two prospects play those two positions? If the Sox had another high celling minor leaguer to throw in than maybe.
thats why i was talking about throwing in flowers, and jordan danks or jarred mitchell. all three of them show promise, flowers has huge power potential and can catch and play 1st. danks has great speed and a mlb caliber great glove, mitchell has huge speed and good offensive skills(hopefully the broken ankle does not hurt him too much)….the sox farm system does not get alot of love becuase they are not stacked and not in the yankees/bosox/ or angles but they have a few guys that could do some serious damage
Theres no way that the sox should or would trade Bacon. And the package you offered is to much, we have to stop trading players, because we covet one that someone else developed, instead lets develop our own for a change.
but if you can keep lilibridge hitting like he is and add prince fielder, who is still very young and on oath for an AL team. Its worth it to trade bacon. We dont know if gordon is the hitter he is now or the hitter he was last year. If vicedio can play medicore D at 3rd and lilibe stays hittig around .270 with his recent power and speed its a plus to move bacon and add prince

Let’s be real for one second about Gordon Beckham: this is a kid that probably the first twenty years of his baseball playing life was head and shoulders above everyone else on the field with him. So yes, his slump earlier this year was terrible but it was bound to happen. He’s started to re-adjust and hopefully he’ll have his numbers up to where they were at the end of 2009.

I really dont think it matters who the sox throw in if they are not pitchers, the Brewers would be hard pressed to take the offer. I think the Sox have a couple guys who could be contibuters in the bigs, but not any sure thing pitchers. I just dont see it working.

So, you get Fielder with a window to talk extension with him, and Dave Bush. Bush would be a very good 5th starter for the White Sox, as he’s a quality innings eater who just happens to be pitching very well right now (7 of his 8 previous starts have been Quality Starts, and his ERA is right at 3 in those 8 starts).
The Brewers get Hudson, a very good pitching prospect (who could probably help us right now), Holmberg, a very young, raw pitching prospect, Danks, a pretty good OF prospect (who would hopefully take over for Gomez in CF in the next year or two), and Beckham. Why do we need Beckham? Well, the way I see it, Brett Lawrie (who plays 2B right now) would likely be better suited to play 1B. Move him to 1B, and you’ve got a 2011/12 infield of Lawrie at 1B, Beckham at 2B, Escobar at SS, and Gamel (if McGehee is traded) at 3B.
Seems fair to me. Thoughts?

In your scenario, where do you have Weeks playing? What about top CF prospect Lorenzo Cain? Your projected 2011/12 infield gives the Brewers a very young, but very uproven infield. Gamel hasn’t shown what he can do at the big league level and looks to be a AAAA player. Lawrie I don’t believe has a single big league AB under his belt. Escobar still needs help at the dish. I don’t think a trade for Beckham helps the Brewers at all and loses a lot of plate production (in your scenario) without Weeks, McGehee, and Fielder. Thanks but I’ll pass.

Hudson would have to be the center piece of the deal with either Viciedo or Beckham coming back to Milwaukee along with 2 lower level / lesser prospects. The Brewers would also send Bush to offset the loss of Hudson in there rotation.
