Phillies Don’t Expect To Add Pitching

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 16, 2010 at 8:34am CDT

GM Ruben Amaro Jr. explained to Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer that the Phillies aren’t optimistic about acquiring pitching help before the end of the month. Last year, the Phillies acquired Cliff Lee, but Amaro doesn’t know if he will be able to add an impact arm in 2010.

“Do we have to have another pitcher? No,” he said. “Would I like to add some pitching? Yeah. I think we need to get healthy. I think we're getting closer."

Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson and J.A. Happ are no longer on the DL, but the Phillies could use help behind Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels. Jamie Moyer and Joe Blanton have been shaky in recent starts and Kyle Kendrick is no sure thing.

Last year this time, the Phillies signed Pedro Martinez, but a reunion seems unlikely, since Pedro has yet to throw off of a mound. There are plenty of starters for Amaro and the Phillies front office to consider, depending on how much they’re willing to spend and which prospects they’re willing to give up. The club could also add a reliever in an attempt to make up the 5.5 game gap between them and the Braves.

You can’t go by what this guy says. He’s sly. Before they got Halladay “there was no way they were getting Halladay”. And a week later, he was a Phil. It’s good to not lay your cards on the table, but I wouldn’t believe a public statement. If he can, he will…or so it seems.

They are obviously hot after Brett Myers.

But seriously, if there wasn’t a history there he would be a nice fit.

Hey Ruben, here’s a solution: DON’T LET BRETT MYERS LEAVE FOR NOTHING! and you could also not have traded Carlos Carrasco, Cliff Lee *and* Kyle Drabek just to get Halladay…that might, just might, have left you with some arms this season…

I’ll believe it when I see it. This is the same guy who said his team had absolutely no interest in Roy Halladay a few days before trading for him.

the phillies would have to be idiots not to add an arm. they don’t seem to be idiots at all.

I’ll give you Carrasco is a clown. But I guess you missed Drabek’s no-hitter a couple of weeks ago? He’s legit.

You cannot believe anything this guy says. Deception is one of his key traits– in fact, you should deeply believe in the opposite of what he says.My translation: “Do we have to have another pitcher? Absolutely we do.”

As a fan if you ever believe any GM and what they say, then your a fool. They are definitely getting an arm because they have had scouts following Haren Oswalt and Sheets. If they don’t make a move this team is dead.

J.A. Happ is probably being shut down for the year, regardless if he’s off the DL. He’s not healthy at all.

Where did you get this info??? That has not been reported anywhere or even rumored. While he may not be healthy enough to be the #3 we thought we had in the playoffs, he can still contribute for the remained of the season.

I have heard the beat writers and radio talking heads say the same thing. If Happ were completely healthy, they would not have sent him down.

If I were the Phils I would trade Victorino or Werth for major league ready prospects or young players as well as getting Haren. Stock up for next year. This team just doesn’t have it this year.

if you have not noticed the standing recently? with this team only being 5.5 out and getting healthy how can you make that conclusion right now. if this team falls out of the race, which i highly doubt, i could understand throwing in the towel and trading werth but not now. remember this is the team that was out 7 games with 17 to play and won the division. there are a lot of games left with the braves and mets.

You’re right- I’ve been trying to be optimistic about this season but it’s just the feeling I get when I watch them, like they’re complacent or not playing with any attitude…The two seasons before and even in ’07 I felt like there was more fight in them and I didn’t get as frustrated watching them. Maybe my expectations were too high this year, but I feel this team is way too talented to be getting outplayed by the likes of the Pirates and the Cubs. I just don’t get how the team lets themselves get embarrassed like that. As much as I try I just can’t get over the Cliff Lee trade. I think that’s what fuels a lot of it.

Based on the prospects Amaro got for Lee, I don’t know if I want him trading for prospects period.

You’re probably right- I would just hate to see the season go down the tubes and Werth walks and getting nothing for him
