Texas Has “Strong Interest” In Xavier Nady

By Mark Polishuk | July 9, 2010 at 8:04pm CDT

Now that Justin Smoak is on his way to Seattle, Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports that the Rangers are looking at Chicago's Xavier Nady.  Chris Davis has already been called up from Triple-A to take over first base for Texas, though Davis was sent down in April due to his unimpressive .556 OPS in 53 plate appearances that necessitated Smoak's call-up earlier this season.

Nady, meanwhile, has a line of .233/.305/.361 line in 151 PA for the Cubs as he tries to recover from major elbow surgery last year.  Nady is the last man on the depth chart in a crowded Cubs outfield, and has about $1.6MM still owed to him from the one-year deal he signed with Chicago last January.  Nady can earn $2.05MM more due to games-played incentives, which the Rangers would also have to take into consideration should they have a more prominent role in mind for the veteran.

If Texas did acquire the right-handed hitting Nady, it would make sense to platoon him with the left-handed hitting Davis (who has a career .671 OPS against lefties).  The Rangers were, however, willing to install a rookie as the everyday first baseman when they called up Smoak, so it's reasonable to think that they'd still show some faith in Davis by letting him take some cuts against major league southpaws.  Davis had a whopping .958 OPS for Triple-A Oklahoma City so perhaps he's gotten his confidence back.

Nady’s a bust-out. If he can’t hack it in the NL, how will he fare in the AL? He’s clearly not completely recovered from the elbow issues. Just doesn’t look like the same hitter this year.

Well, he’s not going to come out and be a .280 and 30 HR guy right off of surgery. I believe the original prognosis was that he’d start to get closer to full strength about this time, and he could probably do some damage in a fairly regular role.

The Mariners should have sent less cash and the Rangers should have asked for Branyan

They sent the cash because the Rangers are broke. They would have had to send MORE money and taken another prospect.

No joke. How about Nady for Davis? Hehe, that’d be nice.

As a Dodger fan, I’m rooting for the Rangers to beat the living daylights out of the Angels this season. The turn of events today pleases me.

Nady needs to go but shouldn’t be a top priority… Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, and Zambrano should be top trade Priority…since they won’t get much for them Lilly is there only value they have to trade..

Doesn’t make sense to me! Why would the Rangers, who are now looking stronger and are willing to deal to make it this year, want a good player that’s recovering from surgery and won’t be any good until some time from now (1+ years)? Why not explore a trade for a better bat, such as Corey Hart or Prince Fielder, or even Lance Berkman? Fielder would be expensive but they could lobby new ownership to keep him or get some picks from arbitration. Berkman would be the cheapest and probably the best “bang for buck” and I’d think he’d be willing to go there, since he’s playing close to home, as well as on a very strong team with strong chances of being in the race.

Well the indians have Shelly Duncan who is a right handed bat with power off the bench could platoon with Davis and he can also play both corner outfield spots, could be had for cheap and I’m sure the Rebuiding Indians would pick up the remain contract also.

    Something like

    David Paisano Or Michael Bianucci

    Plus Leury Garcia

For Shelly Duncan in 88 AB’s 284 BA with 5 homers and 13 Rbi’s and Cash

The Cubs need a decent catcher that can field and hit.. Soto is definitely not that guy.. he’s horrible

So you think we should replace Soto with Saltalamacchia? Soto is a career .268/.360/.464 who averages 22 HR/162 games, or if you want to look at only 2010 Soto is .284 /.407/.480 (by the way he has the 5th best average in the majors this year of any catcher with +200ABs) with with a guy (Saltalamacchia) that’s a career .251/.313/.388 that averages 16 HR/162 games. As for his season well he’s spend most of that (only 5 Big League ABs) in the minors hitting .241/.308/.422 at AAA.Seems like a good idea to me

@sportsnut969……thats exactly the kind of low cost move for a versatile player the Rangers should make. Mike Bianucci is yours. If we gave up Paisano, that would mean we have only Brandon McCarthy to show for the Danks and Masset trade with the White Sox. Hopefully, Paisano can salvage that mess some day. Want Marcus Lemon instead of Leury Garcia? No? OK, we have Andrus entrenched at SS and many years left to play and Jurickson Profar(whom the Mariners didn’t take in Lee trade) AND Luis Sardinas in the low minors. You can have him. DEAL DONE!
