White Sox Might Consider Oswalt

By Zachary Links | July 11, 2010 at 8:50pm CDT

The White Sox might consider dealing for Roy Oswalt, tweets Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.  At the same time, GM Kenny Williams & Co. are leery of a switch from the National League to the American League.

Williams may have some convincing to do as Oswalt reportedly does not want to play for the White Sox.  One has to think that the ace could be swayed, however, as the ChiSox present Oswalt with a chance to win and the opportunity to team up with friend Jake Peavy.  Back in 2008, Peavy was open to joining the Astros in order to play with the three-time All-Star.

It appeared that the White Sox would be sellers just one month ago.  However, the club may look to buy after rallying in recent weeks and climbing their way to the top of the AL Central.

According to an unsourced Ken Rosenthal report. Even if it’s true, we don’t know when that information comes from; it may have been before the White Sox vaulted themselves back into contention.

      Things can change.

Typical Sox fan… middle of the pack all year, finally work your way up to first for one day and start talking like they own the division. It’s mid July, don’t act like you just grabbed first in September.

Wait, is this Rick Porcello chiming in from the minors? On behalf of all typical Sox fans, I apologize for hurting your feelings. Maybe next time we spot you guys a 10 win head start, you’ll take better care of it.

Typical Detriot fan… Someone talks a little smack and you play the innocent victim, all the while conveniently forgetting Detroit fans are the worst I’ve ever met at running their mouths. Don’t act all squeaky clean on the trash talking because the Sox have put together a great run. We all have no idea who will end up winning the division, but the fact remains..you’re in second, we’re in first. The standings at the end of the season matter, but don’t act like you didn’t enjoy your run in first place while it lasted, today’s our first day atop the division. We’re enjoying it.

You have the arguably the worst pitching staff in the AL central and have no shot at winning the division. Your average starter ERA is about 5.00 and the only pitcher on your staff that could pitch for the Sox is Verlander. How do you possibly think that you have any chance at competing when all you have is a few good hitters (won’t argue with that)? I can’t wait until they restore Detroit back to a “natural” state so we do not have to be anywhere near that dump of a “ghost” town.

Peavy said the same thing last year too, I believe around the same time. Then he reconsidered after the Sox started winning at around the same time. Its seems to be an eerily similar situation here. I have two concerns though, first that he’ll fare the same as Peavy who hasn’t had too much success here, and second that we will give up too much for him. Regardless I trust Kenny Williams, we got a first place team to show for it.

But that point is moot it would cost the White Sox whatever they had left in the Minors to pull this off and Gordan Beckham would be the starting point.

I pretty much know for a fact they wont trade Beckham

Don’t think the Astros will want Beckham. Daniel Hudson would be the demand, plus some prospects in low A. The White Sox farm system is so terrible that not getting Hudson would be a dealbreaker for the Astros.

The sad thing about your reply to that comment is that tp692 took the time to rattle off a bout 15 players, and because you probably don’t know who half of them are, you decided to come back with that bland response.

Actually, I know about all of them, at least in passing. I spend a lot of time following the minors. Most of them are having bad seasons. Tyler Flowers is moderately interesting, but his strikeout rate is very high, high enough to scare me off.

Jared Mitchell is the only one I’d want as more than a throw-in for an Oswalt trade, but he’s a long way from being MLB-ready, so I don’t see him as the centerpiece of a deal.

A deal centered around Hudson and Mitchell could work, if the Astros can’t find something better. But I’m hoping they can get more from a team with a better farm system.

I honestly don’t see this being a good deal for the Sox. Pitching against the Scrubs, Pirates, Brewers, etc. and their 7-man lineups with 2 outs built in is not even close to the AL. I didn’t feel that way about Peavy, but I do about this guy. I keep thinking back to that one horrible inning he had in game 3 against the Sox in the 05 series…and that wasn’t exactly a potent lineup. No thanks.

Yes, completely disregard the almost 2000 IP during the regular season and use ONE IP during game 3 of the World Series to judge how talented of a pitcher Oswalt is/can be, that just makes so much sense.

Lets see if the White Sox where to some how talk Roy Oswalt into going and the Astros pay like 7 million of Oswalts Salary and Add lets say Jeff Keppinger and Brandon Lyon
Just to sweeten the deal alittle and get alittle more inreturn I could see a return of:
Gordan Beckham, Daniel Hudson,Brandon Short and Tyler Flowers.
And Flowers would most likly be shipped out ASAP to try and get a Young Prospect maybe to the Mariners Maybe Dustin Ackley if the Astros threw in Chia Jen-Lo or something.

The Astros would have to be blown away by the White Sox to make them talk to Oswalt

I think the real deal here is maybe make a less blockbuster but still valuable trade. Maybe Adam Laroche and either Dan Haren or Edwin Jackson. I say start with Tyler Flowers and Brent Morrel and throw in no more than four prospects. You might be able to get a third team involved and send Linebrink to a contender that needs bullpen depth. Im not a GM so Im not prepared to figure out the logistics.
