Oswalt Would Not Accept Trade To White Sox, Tigers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 9, 2010 at 1:13pm CDT

The White Sox and Tigers are among the teams to which Roy Oswalt would not accept a trade, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). A couple of teams are interested in Oswalt, though the market for the right-hander's services remains slow. The Astros are reluctant to pick up much of the $25MM or so remaining on Oswalt's contract, which limits the number of teams with serious interest.

It doesn't appear that Cliff Lee will be on the market for long, so teams in search of starting pitching may soon be calling the Astros about Oswalt, who has a no-trade clause. The Mets won't be one of them, at least for now. They are prioritizing Ted Lilly, according to multiple reports today.

The Tigers could use stability behind Justin Verlander, Jeremy Bonderman and Max Scherzer. The White Sox have had a steady rotation so far, but recently lost Jake Peavy to the DL. The Tigers, White Sox and Twins are all within two games of each other in the AL Central.

why would he not come to chicago? he and peavy are very good friends, both the tigers and sox are in the races thus both contenders. and kenny williams is probably one of the only GM’s willing to take on his salary….basically he wants to go to a team that is a favorite to win it all the yakees are out of it. the nats are not going to win this year, or next year, he probably want to go to the phillies even though they look more and more like non contenders…oh oswalt you want out of the astros yet you dont want to go to teams in the hunt…weird

hopefully peavy can call him and be like “dude listen i know its sounds weird but Chicago is awesome, the city, the fans, the team are awesome” if kenny comes out with one of the better deals. Flowers, hudson, another minor leaguer, or mabe not even hudson maybe munoez(sp) or torres plus eating his money that might be the only deal that the astros would accept thus forcing oswalts hand

it all depends on how much money the team taking him would take on. If kenny works a deal to get him and takes a majority if not all of his remaining contract then the caliber of the trade prospect drops. If the stros eat a lot of his deal then there needs to be a better prospect…So flower and a few minor leaguers not named hudson and danks plus eating all of his contract could very well get the deal done

well prince is officiall on the block, i hope the whitesox move their focus to him and not a pitcher, keep hudson he will do just fine and trade for fielder….Flowers, torres, 1-2 more minor league pitchers not named hudson, danks(really no place for him on this team with carlos, rios pierre and hopefully mitchell, and gordon beckham. should easily get the deal done, let lilibridge(on fire) play second…line up and position

        Lf-pierre
        SS-Alexi
        CF- Rios
        DH-Prince
        1st-Konerko
        RF-Carlos
        C- AJ
        3rd- Vicedio/omar
        2nd- Lilibridge/omar

DFA kotsay and sign blalock to be 1st/3rd/lf/rf/dh back up
bench is blalock, omar(when not starting) vicedio(when not startin) jones, castro, teahan…pitching rotation buehrle-gavin-danks-freddy-hudson with the bullpen staying with santos, jenks, thronton, putz, pena, threets……GOOD TEAM lots of guys that can play alot of positions

and actually you could even make the deal gordon-vicedio-flowers should easily get the deal done, prince is under contract next season too so its not a rental. We could resign him and if not get draft picks for him and we could then call brent morell up to back up omar at 3rd and give him some major league experience

I like it know Brewers want a lot for him but I would rather give up more for him than for Dunn anyways. Hudson, Dayan, or Beckham would probably have to be included. Adam Laroche would be a cheaper option & I would rather give Blalock a shot than see Jones in the lineup but Hank cant play OF. They may be better off going with a RF since you cant depend on CQ.

    So you’re saying there’s a chance….

He’s my third choice in the “Twins need a pitcher” category behind Lee and Haren, but I wouldn’t be completely opposed. I’ve stated in different rumors that I don’t think the Twins are only a pitcher/ace away, but it’s more appealing to get a guy who could be around for a few years.

I just don’t know if the Twins push the payroll to the +$115 mark like they’d need to for Haren/Oswalt. Plus, if they bring back Pavano that’ll raise it more. And then they’ll be down on infielders if the lose Hudson and 3B still wouldn’t be filled unless they finally give Danny V a shot.

Crazy suggestion but I wonder if the Padres could be a very dark horse? They won’t re-sign Adrian Gonzalez to a long term deal at big money but the commitment to Oswalt would only be for 2 years. An Oswalt/Latos 1-2 would be a very good top of the rotation.
It would also enable them to finally energize a San Dego community that is not showing up to the ballpark.

I wasn’t proposing a Gonzo-Oswalt swap. The Padres would need to send prospects. I was just highlighting that I thought it was more feasible for them to trade for Oswalt than re-sign Gonzalez.

      • SDCAP

Gonzo should be looking for a minimum 8 year $160m deal. The Padres would see 4 yr $48m as being a big contract. I’d love for him to stay but I can’t possibly see that gap being bridged.

Don’t want that smarmy redneck on the Sox. Nothing against rednecks – luv me some Bobby Jenks, Mark Buehrle and Jake Peavy, but Oswalt was a crybaby in the WS. Last year he claimed that he did not make the statement “I wouldn’t go to the White Sox” when they weren’t even interested but with this as supporting evidence it looks like he lied about that.

Seriously? You don’t want to be part of one of the strongest rotations in the league when healthy (the White Sox) or part of a team with an annual Cy Young candidate in Verlander, MVP in Cabrera, good, young players, and a solid rotation?
Where do you want to go Mr. Oswalt?

lmao you really think the Tigers would take back Lyon on that horrible contract? They have valverde now and they only signed lyon last year because there was nobody available that Detroit could afford. They refused to sign him to a multi-year deal why would they trade for him when he has the same contract they refused to offer? They’re better off letting the kids take their lumps and learn for the future.

Oswalt isn’t butthurt over what happened five years ago what a bunch of dummies. maybe he doesn’t like the area, maybe its personal reasons such as his family not wanting to move there. Oswalt is a good pitcher and I am as disappointed as the next Tigs fan he refuses to pitch for Detroit but this isn’t the year to mortgage the future. Keep the eyes on 2011. Don’t misunderstand me I’m all for making improvements to the team, but I think Dombrowski learned from the Renteria trade that older declining players aren’t worth trading what little prospects we have.

Matt Kemp and James Loney to even begin the Process and they still could add Jeff Keppinger and Matt Lindstrom to sweetin the blow. Arent the dodgers looking for a RP and a SP? Kemp and Loney and maybe Dewitt for that package and the Astros pay 15 million of the remaining contract on Oswalt. (25 million – 15 million = 10 million and the Dodgers to the Playoffs)

The key here is you really don’t HAVE to give up much—you’d probably be taking Oswalt’s salary off Houston’s hands as it is (which we all know would be problematic for the Dodgers). If Loney wasn’t leading the team in RBI’s and generally being the quiet team MVP of the last six weeks, you’d possibly see him going “home” if they wanted to take Bergman (who wowed with 2 HR’s while all the scouts were there for Oswalt). Problem is, Houston is dangling BOTH of these guys for salary relief (nevermind Oswalt’s “demand”) and LA is’nt going to help Houston in that regard for both of them, let alone the difficulties they’d have just for Oswalt.

Maybe Peavy told Oswalt not to bother coming to Chicago. Oswalt already said he would strongly consider the Dodgers, Giants and Padres. He also said he wouldn’t mind going to the AL. I guarantee he would accept the Rangers and most likely the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays. Angels too would be up there. He has stated in the past he would prefer to be on a coast instead of the Midwest, with the exception of the Cardinals. Nothing personal to any individual team.

peavy was hesitant about going in the first place. i don’t think peavy nor oswalt fit into ozzie’s clubhouse. i don’t think there’s much more than that. oswalt has stated he doesn’t want to know anything until a deal is in place and he looks and vetos it. and i don’t truly think a deal was in place with either the Sox nor Tigers. i was really just trying to being facetious about the astros front office. as terrible as the front office has been you can come up with some really crazy scenerios their dealings. they probably botched the deal and weeks later it will come out that incompetence, not lack of approval from Oswalt, led to the no trade. I think the Stros think the Yanks are going to become desperate-but that’s another rant that the Stros will screw up too. I think they both stay.

Oswalt’s and Peavy are BFFs. Unless Peavy told him to not waste his time on coming over or he’s playing a power struggle–for either his return or the astros (he’s 2 wins away from all time win leader in Houston with 2–might be three starts left before the deadline) he’s pitched well as of short late. imagine a tear before the deadline and what he could yield for the Astros. Berkman’s hot lately too. Fine—our management sucks–so instead of facing the facts I tried to make the only life left in this program is a 3 week stretch of solid ball by two aging stars. Meanwhile the ground underneath Carlos Lee eroded away another 2 inches.
