Twins Claim Randy Flores

By Tim Dierkes | August 25, 2010 at 1:57pm CDT

The Twins claimed lefty reliever Randy Flores off waivers from the Rockies, according to a press release. The 35-year-old posted a 2.96 ERA with 5.9 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 in 27.1 innings for the Rockies this year, but the Rockies designated him for assignment last week. He earns a total of $650K this year and hits free agency after the season, so the Twins make only a minor financial commitment.

The Twins transferred another lefty reliever, Ron Mahay to the 60-day DL in a corresponding move. With Mahay and Jose Mijares injured, the Twins had a clear need for left-handed relief and it didn't take long for GM Bill Smith to address it cheaply.

    So…the positives: He’s lefthanded

    The negatives: He sucks.

    Great.

He’s not great, but he hardly sucks. I think Gardenhire will know how to use him and maximize his effectiveness.

Maximize his effectiveness… demote him to AAA?

In other news, the Twins still need left-handed relief help.

Meh 2.96 ERA is worth taking a chance on i’d say

Did you not pay attention to the rest of those stats? Dude’s walked almost as many people as he’s struck out. 2.96 is an illusion buddy…

Yeah, I’m surprised it’s not double that.

He’s a step up from Perkins, and won’t cost a ton. Failure to cause celebrating? Sure. But to be poo-pooing this move as though there were scads better options is pretty silly.

Pretty sure he’s better than what we have for a situational left hander….which is basically nothing considering Perkins numbers against lefties… So yeah, not sure how this can be a complete loss of a move – worth a shot, better than not doing anything!

They should just DFA Perkins and let Delaney have a shot. Twins need to learn when a lost cause is a lost cause. Perkins will probably never be a contributing Major League pitcher. Yes, he was a first round pick. Yes, he’s a Minnesota guy. Grew up here and was a great member of the Gophers… but the ride’s over. Glen needs to GO.
