Manny Ramirez On Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 25, 2010 at 2:09pm CDT

The Dodgers placed Manny Ramirez on waivers, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. As Morosi explains, teams have until Friday to claim Ramirez. If there's a claim, the Dodgers will have until next Tuesday to work out a trade.

The Pirates have the National League's worst record, so they get first dibs on Ramirez. If every NL team from the Pirates to the Padres passes on Ramirez, American League teams will have the chance to claim the slugger. That's when things could get interesting; the White Sox intend to claim Ramirez, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Since they have a worse record than any other AL contender, Chicago will have the chance to claim Ramirez if he makes it past all 15 NL clubs.

As ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reported earlier in the week, about three quarters of Ramirez’s salary is deferred. That means he makes just $1.1MM between now and the end of the season despite his hefty $20MM salary. Ramirez earns the remaining $3.4MM in deferred payments, which would presumably make his salary easier to absorb.

I wonder if it will get as much coverage as the Johnny Damon non-story. Maybe not because neither Boston or New York are involved.

Actually, I can think of plenty of reasons not to watch ESPN, not just because of this. I also prefer MLB Network…except when Peter Gammons is on…and then I just flip the channel.

This should be interesting. By telling teams he’s going to claim Manny, I wonder if there are any teams that would want to screw KW by putting a claim on him.

This should be interesting. A LOT has to fall into place in order for this to happen.

I can only hope, but 4 million is a steep price if only to screw the White Sox.

One thing is certain, Manny is only good when he feels like being good…. Chicago would provide a nice showcase for him to work towards getting a good deal next year. Something I’m sure Mr. Boras will be reminding him of.

I agree here. Plus him and Omar played together for a long time in Cleveland. I think Omar will help keep him in line/motivated along with the playoff push/impending free agency.

I wonder if teams might want to pressure the commissioner’s office to revoke his claim on the grounds of tampering. Pretty bogus to get that word out through ‘sources’. Maybe Cleveland will claim him to generate some ticket sales at the end of the year. That would be pretty funny.

It’s not like the Sox are saying they are going to sign Manny as a Free Agent. There are many teams that can claim Manny before them, and teams that would claim him if he got passed them. Telling teams they will claim him only hurts them, since then other teams know that he will be claimed and then will possibly put a claim in to block him.

What do you think about a sniper claim by Billy Beane? Oakland desperately needs a power bat, and the salary wouldn’t be a huge deal since most of it is deferred. It would give the A’s an exclusive negotiating window with Manny if he works out.
I was talking with a friend the other day that works for the A’s marketing group….he had heard that Oakland might be looking for a bat if Texas stumbles a bit. You never know.

I think the A’s are too far out of 1st place to be realistically contemplating a move like this.

What’s stopping Minnesota or TBay from giving Baltimore a ‘nudge-nudge’ christmas present to claim Ramirez and fall short of acquiring him?
Are we suppose to think that baseball teams are run honestly and ethically — when people like Bud Selig, Jeff Loria et al are setting the bar so low?

If Detroit claims him they very well could own him and the 4 1/2 million that hes owed. That would seem kinda silly for a team thats out of the race wouldnt it? You think Minnesota is going to pay part of that because…..??????

This to me sounds more like something the league would have a problem with than the Sox stating they will claim him if he’s put on waivers. 2 teams working in conjunction to screw another team, I’m not sure about that. Also would the Orioles who really have no need for Manny this year risk a bad relationship with the Sox for future possible deals?

Cardinals need to claim Manny. First of all we could really use him, second we need to make sure the Reds don’t get him. The only team who realistically could block the Cards is the Giants.

yes when Manny starts then once we have a decent lead put jon jay in right and holliday in left

This would be a bold move, and I would love it. Rasmus has a calf strain, so it would be Manny/Jay/Holliday from left to right with Craig and Winn off the bench.Sadly, instead the Cards will probably stick with Holliday/Jay/Craig hoping that Rasmus will be back soon. If Rasmus gets back really soon, I guess that’s okay, but Craig has not been hitting well, and we saw how disastrous waiting for Freese to return from injury turned out (although “Happy Pete,” Pedro Feliz, has shown signs of being serviceable).

It would definitely be a bold move….but the Giants wouldn’t be a risk. They have gotten Guillen and got stuck with Ross in the last couple weeks…..no way do they risk a claim on Manny, even if he’s better than both.

I think the Phillies could be a dark horse for Manny. Charlie Manual worked with him in Cleveland for a long time and they got along well from everything I’ve ever heard.

I realize Ibanez has picked it up some of late….but Brown is showing his youth. An OF of Manny, Ibanez, Werth, Victornio, and Fransico (and Gload) would be something going into the playoffs….and should the Phillies get back to the WS, they’d have the perfect DH for the AL park.

SD is probably the most likely NL team (if they don’t get Hawpe)…..but if I were a bettin man, I’d say he makes it through the NL unclaimed.

I’ve been campaigning for the reds to claim him and work out a deal, One because Jimmy just went on the DL and im not sure if Nix did so where short on outfielders and were making a playoff run. 2 Gomes looks like he is outta gas honestly reds fan loves his passion and what he brings to the game but he is looking sluggish. 3 Okay so Manny’s D is bad really bad but Stubbs is in center and can help run down balls to the left of Manny and His bat is way worth the sacrifice and the reds has been lacking a power right bat for a while now , so Walt shock some people and put the claim on him please. And pray Manny can stay healthy and were in the playoffs

i just dont see many if any nl teams taking manny, with his injury problems he is a DH. Also thats a lot of money for a pinch hitter.

In the AL i really dont see any team to take him till he gets to the whitesox. if they pass, boston or tampa bay will pick him up.

Manny’s injuries this year involved, and affected, his base-running. DH’s might not have to chase down flies, but they do have to run the bases. So the injury concerns apply to all 29 teams, not just the NL teams.

This is true, but it’s not like he’s been a great base runner anyway. It’s easier on him to possibly run around the bases 4 times a game than roam the OF for 9+ innings and also bat.

I wouldn’t describe what he does as “roaming” exactly. But watching him day after day, he’s not as bad a defender as is popularly believed, and nowhere near as bad as the Manny-haters and the compliant Boston media have broadcast.

He is, however, a clumsy base-runner, especially in tight situations where he has to backtrack. That’s how he seems to have hurt himself.

He is fast enough not to be a baseclogger, and there is a good chance he will hustle. He is on the last year of a contract and manny likes to get paid.

I would really like the Braves to make a claim on him, he would solidify the revolving door that is their LF and give them some right handed power in the heart of their order.

Ben, I’m confused and sorry to ask. If the White Sox do in fact claim Manny, who is responsible to pay the $3.4mm in deferred payments? The claiming team or the sending team or is this something that potentially would be worked out btw the two teams?

    Reply
    • Jaime Pearson

The claiming team takes on the contract, and any money owed. Unless there is a deal worked out where then money could change hands. If it’s a straight claim and drop, the claiming team would take on the deferred money.

Waiver question – I didn’t see the answer on the “August Trade Rules” post.

What happens if teams with identical records both claim a guy (i.e. Rays and Yankees)?
