Angels Release Brian Stokes

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 7, 2010 at 10:11am CDT

The Angels released right-hander Brian Stokes, according to the MLB.com transactions page. The Halos acquired Stokes last winter when they sent Gary Matthews Jr. to New York in a trade that didn't help either team. The center fielder struggled in New York and the Mets released Matthews in June.

Stokes, who turns 31 today, posted an 8.10 ERA in 16.2 innings for the Angels with as many walks as strikeouts (16). He was more effective in 14 minor league outings this year, posting a 4.08 ERA with more than twice as many strikeouts as walks.

He was a decent reliever for the Mets. Maybe he comes back on a minor league deal next year

Really surprised he wasn’t more effective. That injury must have screwed him up pretty bad.

On a similar note – GMJ continues to screw his effective team. Was hoping that something could have been salvaged from that abominable signing.

Well, on the bright side it is only one more year. The Dodgers are still paying Manny, Nomar, Andruw Jones, Juan Pierre, and Jason Schmidt. They will be paying Manny, Jones, and Pierre through 2014.

That does actually make me feel a little better. Thanks!

If the Angels go with an 11 man pitching staff next season, who do you think will fill out the bullpen? Most likely Shields will be gone too.

    CL Rodney
    SU Jepsen
    RP Bulger
    RP ???

I’m guessing Jordan Walden, Fransico Rodriguez, and maybe Micheal Kohn? I know we have a Lefty in AAA that’s more of a reliever named Daniel Davidson. There isn’t any free agent relievers that I can think of that would be appealing.

PapleBUM is a free agent but no thanks. So is Mariano Rivera but we all know what is happening there. Rafael Soriano and Arthur Rhodes could be attractive, but Soriano would cost a lot most likely and both would require giving up draft picks possibly. As for lefties, Joe Beimel is the only guy i can see that the angels maybe pick up. Other than that, i agree that Walden, Rodriguez and Kohn will be there. Only way it doesnt happen is if they want Walden to be a starter again and send him to AAA, which i dont see hapenning
