Elias Rankings Update

By Tim Dierkes | September 9, 2010 at 11:01am CDT

After the season the Elias Sports Bureau will take all players over the 2009-10 period, divide them into five groups for each league, and rank them based on various statistics.  Then each player will be labeled a Type A, B, or none.  Those designations and the possible accompanying arbitration offers determine draft pick compensation (click here for a refresher).

Eddie Bajek has reverse-engineered the Elias rankings, and he's providing that information exclusively at MLB Trade Rumors.  Here's a look at how the players rank for the period beginning with the 2009 season running through September 7th, 2010.  The Google spreadsheet below has separate tabs for each position group.  You can also go directly to the Google spreadsheet here.  Our last set of Elias projections is here, in case you want to see what changed.

After seeing Betances pitch last night, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yankees get some draft picks for Vazquez and keep moving Betances up. Defintly the next King Felix.

great pitching duel last night for sure. .. I don’t see the comparisons between him and king felix though, i think with the delivery and arsenal he looks like a taller version of Josh beckett ( of old of course)

Well its funny because I thought. His delivery couldn’t be more Kind Felix like.

THANK YOU SPAN!!!!(Is it ok if I call you that?) FINALLY SOMEONE NOTICES DELLIN! I love this kid and his dominance of the game is comparable to great pitcher like King Felix. I did pay attention to that game, and right there and then I thought “Cashman better not trade him” I always knew Betances would be dominant if he staye healthy. Nice surprise to see people notice.

I’m glad Fraser has slipped back to a Type B. . No way he was going to get signed as an A… also John Buck isn’t going to get up to a Type A so I really don’t get why the jays continue to give him all the catching duties when JP is on the team, get him acclimated to the bigs.

Lol well the jays have struggled against lefties all year. and holland is keeping left handed batters to something ridiculous like .149 ba… so cito thought lets stack it up with the righties.. but some how doesn’t find a spot for JP arencibia to play? lol

i just keep telling myself.. one more month, one more month. … i love cito, but i can’t wait for him to be gone

HAte Cito all you want. But he’s going to get the jays a winning record(hopefully) this year. That’s pretty dame good in that division w/ some of the Jays having down years.

I still can’t believe that the Angels Francisco Rodriguez is a type A. How do they get these rankings?

What are these rankings based on? How is Luis Castillo more valuable than Jose Reyes?

how is micheal young and elvis A. ranked as a type B. I guess that proves how ignorant this ranking system is. Its almost as bad as the H.O.F. system (pete rose)

Eddie, I assume you are bolding would-be free agents. If so, you’ll likely want to unbold Brett Myers (NL SP) at your next update session as he was extended through 2012 with a vesting option for 2013. I believe the also-bolded Livan Hernandez was recently extended, too. Thanks for the work.
