Nationals Could Make Offer To Vazquez Next Week

By Mike Axisa | November 20, 2010 at 10:54pm CDT

The Nationals have expressed interest in free agent righty Javier Vazquez according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson (via Twitter), and it's possible that the club could make him a contract offer as soon as next week. Vazquez expressed an interest in pitching for the team at the end of last month.

The Nats have let if be known that they are ready to spend to upgrade their rotation, showing interest in everyone from Cliff Lee to Carl Pavano and now Vazquez. They'll have competition from another NL East club though, Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez met with Javy in Puerto Rico earlier today. The 34-year-old righty had a 5.32 ERA in 157 1/3 innings for the Yankees in 2010, but he finished fourth in the NL Cy Young voting in 2009 and was good for 200 or so innings with lots of strikeouts on an annual basis for the decade before that.

A bidding war between 2 teams with some of the lowest attendance in the league. I’m sure he feels loved.

Drag more than that — there were 7 teams with worse attendance than the Nats this year.

Any fight over Vasquez would be more of a skirmish than a war.

Interesting, if the money is similiar, I see him going to the Marlins, but I think it would be nice to see Pavano pitch for the Nats. One of the best Baseball enviorments in Baseball and he would be returning to his old organization…This is all if the money is right…

By the way, the Nats, how did they just let Brad Peacock and Brad Meyers go to waste? Couldn’t believe it.

Peacock is not Rule Five eligible; it was a reporter’s error to include him on the list. Brad Meyers is still recovering from a foot injury, in fact still has screws in his foot. Unless a team thinks he is worth keeping on the 25-man for all 2011 waiting for him to finish rehab, he won’t get picked.

Good new for the Yankees. Maybe now they can confidently offer Javy arbitration. His terrible year screwed the Yankees over a type A free agent.

If they do I could see him pulling a R. Soriano and excepting arbitration. So they would have to eat some of his salary in trading him to get anything worth while in return.

the yanks will probably offer arbitration to no one like they’ve been doing the last couple of years. The only way they will is if he’s got a contract before the deadline.

Am i the only one that thinks the Reds should Be checking in on Javier,Brandon Webb and Zack Grienke? They need a ace and if Vazquez pitches like he did the year before thats a ace. And in another thread i said they should go in for Justin Upton with the package of Yonder Alonso,Mike Leake,Juan Fransico ,Jordan Smith ,Logan Ondrusek.Would that get it done or is he more valuable? because he didn’t play that great last year but the Dback would be getting there Future First basemen instead keep counting on Brandon Allen.Mike Leake to plug into the rotation he will be pretty good he has some very good control when hes on there second or third best pitcher? Juan Fransico incase they trade Mark Reynolds and they future third basemen he has a ton of raw power and is althetic enough to play Left. Smith is a HARD throwing righty who did pretty good in his call up from AA. Ondrusek had a pretty good steak of not allowing a run in im wanting to say 20 or so innings. Is that far? and if we could get Stephen Drew they Add Valkia or Fraizer. and Homer Bailey?

So it would go like this
    Az gets-Valkaia or Fraizer,Ondrusek,Smith,Bailey,Leake,Fransico,Alonso
    Reds get-Justin Upton,Stephen Drew,
Upton would be left field due to one of the strongest and accurate throwing arms in the majors thats Jay Bruce. and he plays good right
Center Field- Drew stubbs is lighting fast he can cover ground alot of Cf cant and he plays defense very well and he has power.

Upton in left because He doesn’t have the arm the Bruce that has and Jay has some speed as well as upton not as much though, Justin wouldn’t replace Stubbs because the ground he can cover and his defense wouldn’t be that better than stubbs there if it is at all.

I hope this is a fair Proposal and hopefully i dont get Bombed for the idea,
But think of the outfield of Upton,Stubbs,Bruce for the next 5+ years whatda think?

Take Smith out and put Frazier in and you might get Upton. Smith seems like a perfect Kevin Towers reliever but Frazier is the better prospect. Also not sure if Francisco would help the trade. Yeah he is a 3B but he cant hit lefties and seems like kind of a free swinger. maybe involve a 3rd team to send him to who can send a reliever to ARZ and you might have a deal.

Francisco is one of the Tops prospects for the Reds and he is young with alot of potential so you coudl work with him.Todd Fraizer is a very good prospect where he can play almost anywhere but i dont think i would give up him plus alonso, leake,Fransico unless we could get Stephen Drew also. Now i would do Cozart though… What kind of reliver do you think Juan could get?

Your trade for both Upton and Drew sounds about right as far as what talent the Reds would have to give up, however, I don’t know if the Reds would mortgage the work they have done in the past 4-5 years to build the farm for two guys who will most definitely make them have to restructure payroll as well.

I’m a Reds fan, I would target Drew before Upton because he fills the larger need for us. Have to admit though an Upton, Stubbs, Bruce OF would be sweet to watch.

Vazquez won’t last in Great American, but Webb could. Really depends on if Webb can throw consistently without injury.

        Agreed.
Vasquez in GA Ballpark = 2009-10 version of Aaron Harang.

Javy is a flyball pitcher who should head down to Florida before he goes to Washington although either team is a fit.

Unfortunatly for the Reds there arent that many groundball pitchers out there. Westbrook was probably the best of the group and he is headed back to STL.

Webb would be interesting but who knows how many starts he will make.

Yeah i was thinking about the Homerunrs he would give up, but Brandon Webb i love for the Reds if he can throw like he did before his injury and that sinker is still working great he has the perfect defense to play behind.Rolen and Phillips took home gold gloves (even though those awards doesnt really mean anything) Votto is get better at defense and who ever is at short O-Cab,Uribe,Tejada,Janish or Drew is good with the expection of Tejada cause his defense isnt what it once was and im not to sure on Uribe D, i hope they resign O-Cab or trade for Drew

I think Vazquez and the Nationals would make a good match. He’s proved he can handle the National League and the NL East. A return would only make sense.

I was thinking, he should join the Mets at Citifield. Flyball pitcher, in the NL East, pitching in Citifield. Makes perfect sense.

I would love the Mets to sign Vazquez (to a reasonable deal), but I don’t think they’re going to sign anyone noteworthy this off-season (which is fine if they can still put a good team on the field).
