Derek Jeter Rumors: Saturday

By Mike Axisa | December 3, 2010 at 10:26am CDT

The Yankees and long-time captain Derek Jeter appeared to be closing in on a deal late last night, but there are still some hurdles that need to be cleared. Let's keep track of latest surrounded the game's active career hits leader throughout the day, with the most recent news up top…

  • Jack Curry of the YES Network tweets that both Jeter and Mariano Rivera have agreed to defer money, concessions that help pushed talks along. Rivera is close to re-signing as well.
  • SI.com's Jon Heyman says a contract could be finalized today. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says that the deal will be for three years at $15-17MM annually, and that the fourth year option will be a "creative hybrid solution" that is not guaranteed and can't vest. (Twitter links)
  • Sweeny Murti of WFAN.com tweets that the Yankees worked deep into the night to get a deal done, and they're talking about a three-year contract worth $51MM that includes a fourth year vesting option at $10MM. The two sides are reportedly "very close."

Didn’t they say $19 million a year last night? lol

Whatever, get it done Saturday please.

And what’s funny is that if the deal gets done today on Saturday, it will only be the 2nd biggest news in baseball.

$19M was the average annual value, so it includes the option buyout spread out over the three years probably.

I always said that he deserved (by Yankee standards) and the contract should have been no more and no less than 4 years/$60MM. They’re both doing right by each other with this deal. Glad they’re working it out. It’s too bad it took them this long with this much public animosity, but it is what it is and hopefully we can put it behind us and Jeter will have a bounce back season to show us he’s still worth the love, adoration and I suppose most important, da moolah.

Just get it done, sign and move on. Mo down, Jeter soon to be down…let’s get down to the rest of our off-season business.

You could probably save yourselves some time by simply summarizing each Derek Jeter article with “Yankees still bidding against themselves”.

That would be great news (although it would have been greater without the public posturing). Then Andy’s next and we’ll have the Core Four back.

forget that the fact that his name is derek jeter… any other 37 yr. old shortstop coming off a .270 10hr. .710 ops. season would never make anything close to what he is getting… what part of his game right now is worth even close to 17m a yr.???

I bet Jeter is worth $20M easy to the Yankees just in terms of marketing his smiling, yet aging, face on the YES Network and in other marketing ways. His baseball skills are really secondary when determining his value to the Yankees.

most likely 6/140 is what I think, and is what Lee is reportedly expecting.

It is interesting that some of this money and Mo’s money is deferred. This will let them make a bigger push for Lee hopefully. I would go 6/150 easy if that is what it took. It isn’t my money though so its easy for me to say.
