Olney’s Latest: Gonzalez, Red Sox, Reynolds, Reyes

By Mike Axisa | December 4, 2010 at 9:12am CDT

Rival executives have been expecting Adrian Gonzalez to land with the Red Sox at some point, and right now it's on the verge of happening. ESPN's Buster Olney writes (Insider req'd) that once the Gonzalez deal is complete, Boston will still have enough financial flexibility and the leverage to pursue a high-priced player like Carl Crawford or Jayson Werth.

The Padres, meanwhile, will be left to explain to the fan base that trading the team's best player is a good thing. Here are the rest of Olney's rumors…

  • The Orioles are the "clear front-runner" for Mark Reynolds. Last night we heard that Chris Tillman's name has come up in trade talks.
  • The Mets will listen to offers for Jose Reyes, and unless the two sides agree to a contract extension, they will move the shortstop before the trade deadline next July.

With the extension in place, I say Lavarnway, Kelly, Doubront, and Rizzo and possibly Kalish involved as well…But Jayson Werth or Carl Crawford in lineup as well! Oh my goodness…

I’m just happy A-Gon and Prince are not going to be the Yankees…This also sums 2 more things up…Adrian Beltre will very possibly be on one of my favorite teams, the A’s…And Prince Fielder will not be a Yankee or Red Sock.

Also, I would not give up David Hernandez at all for Mark Reynolds and their shouldn’t be a “package of players.” Yes, Reynolds has tons of power, but he really isn’t worth it…I’d give Chris Tillman and Pat Egan and thats it.

Honestly if Fielder agrees at some point during his contract negotiations wherever he ends up that he wouldn’t mind being an everyday DH and pretty much never playing first base, he could still go to either NYY or Boston. Both teams could use that bat at DH in the near future. Might have been some foreshadowing in Boston not offering Ortiz a 2 year deal. The money would make it seem unlikely after a Gonzalez contract and if Werth / Crawford sign too but who knows…

I guess Boston could be a possibility after next season, but I don’t see any scenario where he ends up in NY. The Yankees have Posada penciled in for a bunch of DH time next year and Montero is due up any time. That doesn’t leave any room for Fielder.

Kalish isn’t going anywhere. Look for Ellsbury to be pencilled in that deal. He wore out his welcome in Boston last year. Plus, Theo has alluded to it being counter-productive having both Ellsbury AND Crawford.

Between Dave Hernandez and Tillman, I ‘d give up Hernandez before TIllman.

I know Tillman has not yet accomplished squat in the majors yet, but he’s been given tryouts and stints in the majors. He’s never really had a good long run at it. It reminds me of how quickly the Mariners gave up on Adam Jones after they gave him a few tryouts. I do believe that control is as much an inborn trait that velocity and stuff are, but we do have to remember that of those traits, command is the one area that can be improved on as a player matures. Tillman’s fastball and curve might have better raw stuff than Matusz. Nowhere near the complete package that Matusz is, but we’re also talking about a player who went through the refinement of a good baseball college program vs. a HS draft pick. And, especially with pitchers, the light can just click on at any given moment.

Fail to see that logic really. Sure, AGone should be a true monster at fenway and the loss of Fuentes is really not much and kelly? Expected, Rizzo? Really not a place for him with both Youk and AGone, yet Boston will now have to get that extension done and all this to get him for 1 extra year and just WHERE were the NYY going to put either AGone or Fielder at in the 1st place? They have Tex and ARod signed for 6-8 years already at non-tradeable contracts and doubt anyone thinks ARod will be playing 3B for more than 2, maybe 3 years longer, so he is going to have to go to DH.

No place for either AGone or Fielder on that team. Glad though that Fielder will NOT be with Boston and echo that sentiment, whoever ends up giving that tub of lard a mega contract next season for more than 3 years will deeply regret it.

The Twins are talking about wanting more speed with their middle infielders. They will sign the Japanese 2B/SS Nishioka and have tendered J.J. Hardy. Would Billy Smith be bold enough to offer Hardy, Slowey and a top minor leaguer (Revere?) to the Mets for Reyes? A top of the order of Reyes and Denard Span would be very exciting.

You think now that Gonzalez is going to sox that they won’t sign beltre? Will he go to A’s now?

Where would Beltre play? With Gonzalez coming to the Sox he would man 1st and Youk would slide over to 3rd, where he has been practicing all of the offseason.

I’d only offer Beltre a series of one year contracts, with the extensions contingent on how he performs in year one, year two, etc. He plays his best in a walk year, never anytime else.

Jonathan Papelbon to the Mets for Jose Reyes

Or trade Papelbon for prospects and send those prospects to the Mets for Reyes

then the redsox trade Marco Scutaro to help rebuild the farm system and save money so they can sign Reyes long term

That’s be a great trade for the Mets… or not. They’re already paying a closer 12 million – why the hell would they need another closer? I mean…honestly I can’t even adequately express how horrid this offer is for the Mets.

Try reading it all it says trade pap for prospects OR trade papelbon to the mets for Jose Reyes either way both will end up getting there teams compensation picks and the mets have other SS options, plus K Rod is in trouble, regardless i meant the prospects acquired from trading papelbon to the mets

A team will trade for a year of Pap, then get two draft picks for compensation, Papelbon is not untradeable there is teams interested in him.

I disagree Reyes is an All star caliber SS, and if Ellsbury went down they wouldnt go back to the last years redsox who had no speed and were limited in dimesions, didnt really have power or speed, we were a injured, contact team, also if Reyes goes down, Lowrie steps in

The redsox could get 2 decent prospects for Marco Scutaro, hes a cheap SS and one of the better ones on the market whether you like him or not, he would easily bring back a major league ready reliever, i didnt mean rebuild the farm system for him but we could use anything we can get now that we traded 3 of our top 10 prospects

What makes more sense for both sides is a straight up swap of K-Rod for Papelbon. Let me explain before people get all over me. K-rod has a god-awful $17.5 mil option that vests with 55 games finished next season. The Mets obviously do not want to pay that amount when they are trying to clear off the books for 2012.

This Makes sense for the Sox because of the fact that they want to groom Daniel Bard as their closer. They can use Rodriguez as the closer until they feel Bard is ready, and when that time comes, (before 55 games finished obviously) name Bard the closer and Frankie becomes a free agent at the end of the season.

      Win-Win

The Orioles should try to get Reynolds for Hernendez and a prospect because then they could use Tillman to get Sandoval to play 1B.

Yes they do. However the Sawks need more power in their lineup and Youk’ plays 3B as well. So they bring in González and shift Youk’ to 3rd….then power up. So they have moveable parts and some flexibility, kind of like the Giants.

MLB needs to look hard at the Gonzalez trade. The Padres are getting hosed by their general manager who is clearly trying to do a favor for his old boss. I fully understand the financial pressures that motivated the Padres to move Gonzalez, but to receive not one player back who can contribute next year or quite likely for two years? Kelly was quite ordinary at AA last year and while he may yet develop into a quality MLB ptcher, he is a huge gamble as the centerpiece of a trade for the “face of the franchise”. Rizzo and Fuentes will also need to hit it big – to remove the suspicion that this was payment to Epstein by Hoyer for moving his career along. I’d love to see what the Cubs offered (if they were even allowed to compete). Fans in San Diego have every right to stay away in droves next season to protest this move.

I’m tired of all this trade Reyes talk, because then you have all the ridiculously low value assesments from everyone else, and thats understandable because it’s terrible time to trade him anyway. He’s incredibly fun to watch and with Pagan batting behined him you kind feel spoiled because it adds an element of explosiveness to the bottom of the order that few, if any can match. why mess with that? to get Paplebon? a great reliver on the decline? sounds a little too familiar to Met fans. If anyone, get rid of Wright, who fits the profie of countless numbers of corner infielders, and is completely replaceable.

THIS JOSE REYES NEW HAS ME FLABERGASTED RIGHT NOW. IF THE METS MOVE JOSE REYES , I WILL AND MIGHT NOT WATCH BASEBALL FOR THE 2011 SEASON. BLUE AND ORANGE PUMPS THREW MY VEINS AND EVEN THE THOUGHT TO TRADE REYES MAKES ME SICK. #1 THIS PLAYER IS EXPLOSIVENESS CAN NOT BE UNDERSTATED. THE FACTS AND THE NUMBERS DO NOT LIE. THE NY METS WIN 72PCT OF GAMES THAT JOSE REYES SCORES IN AND MR.ALDERSON,RICCARDI,DEPODESTRA,RICCO AND THE REST OF THE BRAIN TRUST THAT VALUES THE NUMBERS MORE THEN ANYTHING MUST NOT UNDERVALUE THIS PLAYER. THERE ARE NO BACKUP PLANS IF WE LOOSE JOSE. I UNDERSTAND THE LAST 2 SEASONS HAVE BEEN INJURY RELATED BUT THE PLAYER DESERVES A FULL SEASON TO SHOW THAT HE IS THE SAME PLAYER FROM HIS 2005 THREW 2008 SEASONS AND THE LAST SEASON AND HALF WAS ONLY DUE TO INJURY. IN THE BEGINNING OF THIS THOUGHT I STATED THAT IF THEY MOVED REYES I WOULD NOT WATCH MY TEAM IN 2011 AND THAT IS BS BECAUSE I HAVE TO MUCH DEDICATED IN THIS TEAM AND TOO MUCH PASSION FOR THIS TEAM NO MATTER WHAT THEY PUT ME THREW IN MY 28 YEARS OF EXISTINCE BUT THE ONE THING I WILL SAY IS I WILL NOT GO TO 1 GAME NEXT YEAR IF THEY DO THIS AND THATS MY WORD.
