Rangers Notes: Manny, Guerrero, Daniels

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 19, 2011 at 4:28pm CDT

Rangers president Nolan Ryan discussed possible moves for the defending American League champions and MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has the details…

  • The Rangers are sill interested in adding offense after missing out on Jim Thome.
  • “It’s always nice to have a veteran bat off the bench," Ryan said. "It gives you an opportunity late in the game if you don't like the matchups. I'm not sure that person is out there."
  • Vladimir Guerrero and Manny Ramirez are probably not fits, Ryan said.
  • It’s not realistic for the Rangers to acquire another dependable veteran starter, Ryan said. Instead, the team will rely on Michael Kirkman, Derek Holland and Tommy Hunter to continue developing.
  • Extending GM Jon Daniels, whose contract expires after the season, will become a priority in the coming weeks.

Jose Guillen could be a good bench bat.

Vlad “probably wouldn’t be a fit”? Why I wonder. Because he wants a fat multi-year deal now that they don’t want to give? They are waiting until he comes back down to earth on his demands? Or something happened during the course of the year personality-wise? Otherwise don’t see why he’s not brought back, slowed down in the 2nd half but my god if they brought up the negative aspect of everybody nobody would get off the couch.

Because Vlad is wanting full playing time. They want a bench bat. Makes sense to me.

Actually, I believe Vlad said he’s open to a 1 year deal with Texas only a few months ago, then pretty much to any AL team. It irks me how teams want to lowball DH players and expect them to perform like a $10mil player in his prime. Vlad, Thome, Matsui and Manny are declining put can still be a major force in any lineup and outperform many mediocre players getting bigger or similar 1 year deals.

forgot about young to dh … guess the need for beltre at this juncture will be long debated … so my comment still applies to alot of AL teams … Angels should eat crow and bring him back … Vlad just mashes … someone once put a bowl of potatoes in front of him, he took one look and they were mashed, they didn’t even get boiled first

Why don’t the Rangers consider Johnny Damon? They need a lefty bat, he has good OBP, they could move Michael Young to 1b? And he could steal some OF starts as well, when, not if, Nelson Cruz gets hurt. And since he really doesn’t have many suitors, they should be able to get him at a discount. They can make the argument, “Since Thome got 3MM, you get 2MM.”

I don’t get the idea that the Ranger’s need a lefty bat. The main players who would lose playing time if Damon was signed would be lefties. (David Murphy, Julio Borbon, Mitch Moreland, etc.)

They want a Right Handed DH not a Left Handed DH

they wont sign manny because he wont accept a part time role, and if vlad will platoon they would sign him, but they arent going to sign a platoon DH at 5-8 mill a year.

throw him 1Mill and let him know he DHs vs Lefties with no field time… he cannot play the field well enough anymore

    I see these options:
    Troy Glaus
    OR
Vlad (if he can accept the role)
