Red Sox Notes: Ortiz, Gonzalez, Papelbon

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 3, 2011 at 3:47pm CDT

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. says the Red Sox are the team to beat in 2011 and that's far from the only news out of Boston's Spring Training camp today…

  • David Ortiz told Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com that he feels good and is open to negotiating an extension during the season if the Red Sox are interested in one (link in Spanish).
  • Adrian Gonzalez told Rojas that he has no pre-set extension agreement with the Red Sox and that he needs to prove that his shoulder is completely healthy before finalizing a deal with his new team (link in Spanish). Gonzalez denied that the sides are waiting to announce the deal because of baseball’s luxury tax.
  • Ortiz told Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston.com that that he would at least consider playing for the Yankees. "Well, if I don't get signed here, I would play somewhere," Ortiz said. "You know what I'm saying? I'm not saying I would play for the Yankees, but I if I don't have a job, I gotta go somewhere else. As long as I play, right?"
  • But Ortiz tells Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald that he is "not even thinking" about his next contract yet.
  • Jonathan Papelbon says his slider will be a key pitch for him in 2011, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. The closer hits free agency for the first time after the season, though he'll have plenty of competition as the relief market figures to be strong again.

Ortiz better think about it after watching his pal Vlady go through what he went through with the stats he put up last year. If it wasn’t for the O’s he’d be playing for 2 mill this year.

Message to David Ortiz……The Yankees have a lot of aging players who will need that DH spot, best of luck.

Paps is going to explode this year, he knows what he is playing for and you will see a different pitcher…As for Ortiz he will be the same player good for 25-30 home runs and will resign with the Sox at maybe 5-6 million a year on a 2 year contract, or he will sign with the Mariners who need a good left handed DH.

I wonder what Wally would do this time. First he just walked away from Ortiz, what’s next? (Referring to the ESPN commercial by the way)

I’m a fan of the “Manny being Manny” commercial. The one where the two guys watch him read a newspaper while eating a sandwhich. “What is he doing?! The Crazy things he does!Thats just Manny Being Manny!”

Ortiz received a $50M/4yr contract after the Sox 2007 championship series. It is likely that if the Sox win another championship in 2011, David will be re-signed, perhaps for as much as $20M/3yrs. But anything less, he may see a $10/2yr offer, providing he equals or exceeds his 2010 performance. It he tails off, at all, he may be history in beantown by next October.

Ortiz is on the wrong side of his mid thirties. I don’t care if we sweep the playoffs, Ortiz is not going to be offered a three year deal. If he performs well, he might get something like Wakefield’s old rolling team option, but they’re not going to commit three years to him.

If Ortiz wants to stay in Boston he is going year to year with them otherwise they will look elsewhere to replace him with a better rounded player.

If Ortiz is productive he will be re-signed for two years, not 3 though. The team has a reasonable amount of youth all around so the majority of the DH at-bats could easily go Ortiz’s way over the next couple of years as long as he is effective.
