Pat Misch Clears Waivers

By Mike Axisa | April 20, 2011 at 12:48pm CDT

WEDNESDAY, 12:48pm: Misch cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A, tweets Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.

SUNDAY, 8:43am: The Mets have made the move official, according to the team's Twitter.

SATURDAY, 9:46pm: The Mets will designate left-hander Pat Misch for assignment to make room for Dillon Gee before tomorrow's game, reports Andy Martino of The New York Daily News (on Twitter).

Misch, 29, was called up earlier today to serve as bullpen depth during the Mets-Braves doubleheader. He appeared in the first game, allowing one run across two innings of work. The Mets outrighted Misch to Triple-A at the end of Spring Training, and he opted to remain with the team instead of becoming a free agent after clearing waivers. They did the same thing to him last season as well.

And you are quite the optimist! Misch may have been helpful to the Mets last season but he was never really good – not even back in his days with the Giants. In fact he just got his first Major League win last season – after 5 years in the bigs. Five!! That is never a sign of being good.

I cannot believe there are still baseball fans on the internet who use wins to measure a pitcher’s value.

You’d be better off directing that comment to someone who actually does. Wins are not a measure, but they sure can be an indication of a pitcher’s capacity to a certain extent, particularly when other pitchers on the same team are performing much better. Within that context Misch’s win totals fit.

No, they are not. You know what is? Run support. Ask Felix Hernandez.

And you can’t even make an argument like this about Misch. You’re right in your assessment that Misch is not “good”, as he is clearly replacement level. But claiming that he isn’t “good” because he couldn’t rack up a win for five seasons is so misleading it makes my eyes bleed. Over those five years “in the bigs” (and his appearance yesterday), he has totaled 195.2 innings pitched. That’s essentially one season’s worth of baseball encompassed in those five years.

My point is, wins are never an accurate indicator of a pitcher’s capacity, even in the smallest manner. This is especially true for pitchers on teams that seem to be allergic to scoring, such as the Mets.

I didn’t “claim” that he isn’t good because he didn’t rack up a win for five seasons. My point was that: 1) he isn’t good, and, 2) to top it off he just got his first win in five seasons – definitely not a good sign. So actually you interpreted things in your own way – making your own eyes “bleed.”

Anyway, I got your point, and if you disagree with mine it’s fine. So if you are one of those guys looking to argue a point endlessly with someone…look elsewhere. Not gonna happen.

ok, i dont like argue..but if you get to major leagues, what means that??

        • Infield Fly

No problem! Here is the “quick and dirty” way I would explain it, and no hard feelings meant. 🙂

Whether we are talking pitchers or position players, there is a BIG difference between the level of play in the Major Leagues and in Triple-A. In general terms, a Major League starting player performs at a much higher level than a bench player or minor leaguer. So bench & Minor League players are considered to be “average,” or “replacement players.” So in keeping with that, a very useful way to assess the value of a Major League player’s performance is to compare it to a replacement player’s value using a metric called “WAR” – Wins Above Replacement.

Now, skipping to my point, over the course of his Major League career, Pat Misch holds a WAR of -0.2, which is well below the Major League standard for an effective starting pitcher or reliever. So by Major League standards Misch is merely a “replacement player,” which is not too good. A player like this is likely to spend a good deal of time in the minors, and just get called up as a replacement (i.e.: a “spot starter”) when the Major League team has run out of other options. Again, I speak in general terms here.

Having said that, don’t get the wrong idea. I am not telling you not to like Misch (because hey, you have the right to like any player no matter how he performs!). All I am saying is that in baseball terms, Misch is not a good pitcher as a Major Leaguer.

well, i know what ur trying to say but im not a fan of Pat, just telling he’s good enough to play baseball and get to major level..but maybe because bad innings or someone playing better than u, u dont get the time u need..i guess

Hard to feel bad for a guy whose played in the big leagues. If he doesn’t have the talent to stick that’s between him and God. He’s done something hundreds of millions of other guys have dreamed of but never achieved. I hope he finds work but I don’t feel bad for him.

Misch is replacement level. That’s why they take their chances on waivers. If he’s claimed, they have other replacement level players.

Pat Misch is this years model of Nelson Figueroa – a disposable player that they had no problems disposing. Pat, if someone else will sign you, I’d suggest taking them up on the offer. The Mets have shown what they think of you, not one year, but two years running. Time to move on.
