Cubs Select Brooks Kriske

By Mark Polishuk | July 12, 2025 at 10:54am CDT

The Cubs announced that right-hander Brooks Kriske’s contract has been selected from Triple-A Iowa.  Left-hander Jordan Wicks was optioned to Triple-A to create 26-man roster space, and that was the only corresponding move necessary since Chicago already had an open spot on its 40-man roster.

Kriske was signed to a minor league deal during the offseason, and this marks his second stint on the Cubs’ MLB roster this season.  The righty ended up appearing in one game when his contract was previously selected back in May, and the Cubs designated him for assignment a few days later, and then outrighted Kriske off the 40-man roster once he cleared waivers.

That two-inning outing on May 24 marked Kriske’s first big league game since he appeared in four games for the 2023 Royals.  Kriske’s Major League resume consists of 21 games and 23 2/3 innings over parts of four seasons with the Yankees, Orioles, Royals, and Cubs, and he has been hit hard for a 10.27 ERA during his brief time in the Show.

This could very well end up being another cup of coffee in the majors for Kriske, as the Cubs might just need a fresh arm for the weekend in the wake of yesterday’s 11-0 loss to the Yankees.  Wicks allowed six runs over three innings of work in a relief outing and surely wouldn’t have been available for either of the two games remaining before the All-Star break.

The situation lines Kriske up for a possible appearance against his former team, and the club that initially selected him in the sixth round of the 2016 draft.  After spending parts of his first five pro seasons with the Yankees, Kriske has bounced around to a few other teams and also spent parts of the 2022-23 seasons pitching in Japan.

Luke Little has great numbers at Iowa. Why don’t they bring him up?

Ray, not sure if you noticed – but Little is the Starting Pitcher for Iowa today. I wonder if they might be stretching him out.

Maybe because Brooks is a use and toss reliever? Or because of the AS break so he doesn’t sit? Who knows? Probably no one.

The Cubs are bringing him up for this weekend just to taunt the Yankees

Sure would have been nice have Paredes at 3B, Cam Smith still in the system and have kept Belli. Tucker is a great player, no doubt. But THAT trade was STUPID.
Bruce Levine said something this morning on his Saturday SCORE show, sort of insinuating Happ had something to do with that trade, happening.

Looks like the Cubs are gifting this road series to the Yankees. It’s a a shame. Cubs fans might want to prepare themselves. Probably getting fleeced again at the trade deadline. Blowing through prospects for marginal players or rentals.

The Cubs are not a serious organization and they’re going to be looking up at the Brewers for the rest of the year, At this point, with the inevitable offensive regression, even making the playoffs is in serious doubt.

Somebody has missed the first 95 games. I guess half game behind the Dodgers for best record in the league is rough.

You’d be a fun target at a poker table.

Got nothing to do with that. It is about bringing up crappy players. Keller is looking like he is done with his moment of glory and is looking like that guy again

When you go cheap you get some solid buys. Boyd for sure falls into that. Career year and keeping the Cubs legit.

But when you keep going for cheap you end up getting duds more than not.

Have you been watching!? God there are some insufferable Cubs “fans” on here. Jed doesn’t do anything, you complain. Jed gets Tucker, you complain about the cost. Jed puts together a team that is in first place at the all-star break, despite a myriad of pitching injuries, and you clowns STILL complain. Please go be White Sox fans if you think the grass is greener. You can see how Chris Getz does things. Otherwise, shut up already, and get behind the squad!!

Lol first they need to win both games and hope that Milwaukee fails.

As for Hoyers moves hes gotten lucky with the pitching doing what they have done so far. Nothing you can do about the injuries.

The hitters okay a guy like Tucker is going to cost a team. Its a gamble he had to take.

But that bench is horrible and you need to be able to fill it with players you can use. Turner is not the kind of guy you waste money o. And the rest are so bad you cant play them as often as you should. If they could use their bench properly its to give gues a day off. And you cant really afford to. That is why they are slumping at this time. They need to rest guys even Swanson. Especially coming threw the dog days of summer.
Now you can blame ricketts for being cheap or you can blame Hoyer for handing out contracts that are a waste. Here is a few in the past couple seasons, Neris, Pressly Bellinger except 1 yrs was useless…

Then you have the whole Busch cant hit lhp..has proven he could recently and if you have followed his career he did so in the minors. They said the same thing about bellinger and Joc Pederson. Hmm all 3 can hit lhp..
On top of the same subject PCA Is worse by 20 or 30 pts vs lhp than Busch is…but hes a hold glove cf Busch is a great defender to and he is 20 to 30 pts in avg above PCA Oerall ..so shouldn’t he be given the same respect? And PCA lately has had issues with the bat from fatigue or trying to do to much.

Again fatigue is setting the players. And that bench is what need to be fixed along with a SP or 2 and a closer…and not Chapman !

Here’s who they should try to get
        SP..Lugo, Evaldi, Cabrera, Ryan Keller.
        OF, Duran,Tauchman,
        1b Ohearn
        Utl willi Castro
3b Suarez ( but I feel while shaw is a liability Castro is enough and with the lineup you can allow him to still develop offensively just like PCA )

Sure its a wish list but if youre giving away top talent you need to go for top talent

They don’t have to win both games and hope Milwaukee fails to be in 1st place at the AS break. It’s an either/or. One of two wins guarantees at a tie if the Brewers win both of theirs. But it is just the break, doesn’t really matter until the end of the season.

Bench sucks, totally agree. They need to bolster that.

Fatigue is a real issue. I’m surprised there haven’t been more days off for some players.

Being behind “the squad” does not mean adoring them uncritically and unrealistically. They have done some good things and they have done some not-good things. Realistically, it is going to be hard to win the division. Making the post-season at all via the wild card is not a sure thing. We hope for the best, but are realistic.

And, some of us are unlikely to be here in 2026. So, we want this one badly.

The 2nd half of the season is going to get tougher with this pitching staff and Theo’s coffee boy has to decide if trading his prized prospects for 1 yr rentals is still his thing.

Unless Hoyer is given a new contract or Ricketts tells him not to empty the farm what does hoyer care if he goes all in and empties the farm system getting to the playoffs.

Am at the White Sox game–I like baseball–watching an almost comically long and unctuous celebration of the 2005 World Series team. The game today against Cleveland seems to be delayed indefinitely by the extended celebration. It was great that they won the Series that year, but that was 20 years ago. Like the less-loved child that they are, the Sox always overdo things. There is a desperation to their celebration. The game is nowhere near starting, and I already have to pee.
