Quick Hits: Morales, Padres, Cardinals, Hamels

By Luke Adams 2 | May 8, 2011 at 3:47pm CDT

Links for Sunday, as players around the league break out the pink bats. Happy Mother's Day!

  • Kendrys Morales will travel to Vail, Colorado to see a foot specialist for a second opinion on his left ankle, writes Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times. In a followup tweet, DiGiovanna says that they've "explored" the possibility of surgery. Mark Trumbo has filled in for Morales with a .265/.296/.500 line and six homers.
  • Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune says the Padres should consider trading one of their late-inning arms, perhaps Heath Bell, for offensive help.
  • Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he's open to exploring a trade for a closer. While Mozeliak is on board with Tony La Russa's current "hot hand" approach for the ninth inning, the GM would prefer to see more defined roles in the bullpen as the season progresses.
  • Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer examines the likelihood of Phillies starter Cole Hamels playing in Philadelphia long-term.
  • As Newsday's Ken Davidoff writes, there may not be any top starting pitching available at the trade deadline this year.  MLBTR's Tim Dierkes drew the same conclusion after examining the midseason trade market for the AL and NL in mid-March.

I can’t imagine the Phils NOT locking up Hamels. He’s the only pitcher, that’s had any sort of long term success, that they’ve developed since Robin Roberts. In addition, he’s a world series hero in Philly.

It would be pretty sweet if Hamels were to stay in Philly. He’s been adept at handling the ups and downs in his career as for as the Philly fans go-that isn’t easy.

I hope they can keep him around because I get the vibe that he would like to stay too.

I love Heath Bell, he’s awesome! However, I do believe the Padres should deal him for the best interest of the team, for the right package.

Not sure what kind of offensive help we can offer, but I’d bet the Braves will be interested in a bullpen arm.

…and that makes the Sox better how? Lose best hitter for a closer when it looks like you’re going to sell?

Because it gets. Solid closer and allows vicedio who is a better hitter to take over in right and he is a better fielder and it’s a little to early to say anyone will sell. But if they do sel there really isnt that much peavy and rios no one will take because of money. Floyd can’t go danks shouldn’t but he could get a good haul. Alexi Gordon and morell should be off limits same with Santos and sale. So really it’s aj, Dunn, konerko, Carlos, and buehrle that could get something. Pierre could be moved but probably won’t

Viciedo, he of the .751 minor league OPS, is a better hitter than Quentin? Whatever you say, dude.

With no SPs available, John Danks could be the most attractive piece at the deadline. He’s a darn good pitcher, so he better fetch a lot if traded, and being the cream of the crop, he should bring even more in.

I personally don’t want him traded unless the moon is given, because you don’t find that many young near-ace left handed pitchers

I don’t want danks moved either but with sale itching to start and with how well Humber has pitched and peavy looking good and coming back danks is expendable. And considering he has Scott boras as his agent I believe we all know he is going to test free agency in 2 years. As consider that too it’s not a rental for danks that alone should bring a good haul.

Why trade Danks? The Sox are a big market team who are usually contenders. Why trade your best pitcher when he still under control for prospects who might “someday” be as agood as Danks. You have a known commodity, don’t trade it the unknown

That’s how’s every single trade ever for prospects works though. If every team did it your way no one would ever get traded

And just because they are a “big market” does not mean they should never trade to get prospects. At some point every team hasnto do it to load their system back up.

no trades work when you’re going to possibly lose your player for nothing. then you see if you can get something in return that can “possibly” be as good. under your system everyone would be traded. there is no reason to trade him unless the sox really start to implode. with a good fan base and competant ownership/management he will stay until next year. and then, after we can see peavy for a minute and humber can really establish himself, you can move him if you can.

so what do the angels do now? do they trade or keep this team

It’s weird to say about the Angels, but I just don’t see alot of attractive pieces on the team. Obviously they aren’t going to trade any young guys that are under control, and no one else is going to draw alot of interest. Unless they make Weaver available, which I can’t see happening.

We don’t need anything. The Angels are in first place in case you haven’t noticed. And that’s without Morales. Trumbo is leading the team in most offensive stats or near the top.

The guy asked if they should “trade the team”. Which obviously you aren’t going to do if you are in first place. So we are talking about if they fall out of contention. Which might happen, it might not. Welcome to speculation, that’s what MLBTR is.

Why do people talk about the Angels trading anyone while they are in first place and winninig with vets that are slumping yet sure to rebound, if one wants to talk a team that is out of it lets talk Boston, I get the feeling that a bunch of hopeful Yankee fans are foaming over Weaver, to talk selling the farm at this point is ridiculous, oh wait, Texas and Oakland are a couple back the first week in May, maybe they should trade everyone and plan for next year, silly talk…

lol tipical Angels fan.. Dude, your team is a joke! You have 4 midgets in your starting lineup and 3 vertran players on the downside of their carrers. Youre in a crappy division PERIOD! The Angels are going to fall apart in June or July because Texas will sign a stud at the deadline and run away with the West. And this is coming from someone who’s been an Angels fan for 16 years. Arte is a jackass!

If you mean because Morales isn’t healing the Angels don’t need to do anything. Mark Trumbo is doing a great job. The older players need to step up and do more. Trumbo and Conger are starting to do more than the rest of them.

If you throw breaking balls to Trumbo he’ll strike out, he’s a FB hitter only

Right now they are in first place so I don’t see them trading anyone. That of course can change come July, but eventually Hunter and Wells will start to hit and right now they are winning despite them. So, unless the rest of the team completely collapses they’ll be in the running till the end — and who knows — maybe Morales comes back in July/August and helps them down the stretch. If they do fall out of contention the only person that could be traded would be Abreu to keep his option from vesting.

while bell is the most valuable piece on our team, he is the only identity for team and him being here is crucial to Latos’ development. Also with our FO enamored with the slop we would only get prospects back for Bell, who would be 1-2 years away. Currently, he is worth more to us than he would be to other teams so unless we get blown away, (unlikely) we cant trade him.

I really want Bell to be kept for a lot of the reasons you state. Where, oh where, is there a player that can hit in Petco? I’m sad, even with the haul they got, that Adrian is gone. It’s pretty obvious he’s the guy that made the offense work. Now the Padres are just sad. Even with all the wonderful pitchers, wonderful pen arms, and the nice players on the farm. Watching the players struggle night after night to generate runs, sometimes even jutst ONE run, is just downright sad.
