Orioles Designate Felix Pie For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 23, 2011 at 3:49pm CDT

The Orioles designated Felix Pie for assignment to create roster space for Matt Angle, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun (on Twitter). The Orioles have confirmed the moves and announced that they also selected the contract of Jake Fox.

Pie, who is out of options, is under team control through 2013 and earns $985K this year. The 26-year-old posted a .220/.264/.280 line in 175 plate appearances for Baltimore this year, playing all three outfield positions. Pie, a former top prospect, has a .249/.298/.374 line in 1051 career plate appearances for the Cubs and Orioles. His most productive years came in 2009-10 in Baltimore (.739 OPS).

MLBTR's Tim Dierkes suggested earlier today that Pie was a candidate to lose his roster spot.

I think someone will claim him. I guess that eliminates the chance of them offering him arbitration

Ok, the only team claiming Felix Pie is a team that needs someone to collect batting helmets after walk off celebrations.

(anyone who doesn’t understand this reference ask an Orioles fan)

Yahoo search something about Pie getting helmet after walk off home-runs. There is some funny video evidence.

After you do that read this. Britt Ghiroli interviewing Felix Pie:

*Finally, by request, I asked Felix Pie about his weird antics when the team has a walk-off celebration. Pie scurries to grab the helmet, in what he describes as a nod to the National Football League. “It’s a touchdown,” Pie said of grabbing the helmet in celebratory glee. “It’s like we scored a touchdown.” So, do with that what you will.

Only because Jim Hendry needs a little defending right now, please remember that Andy MacPhail was still in charge in 2001 when the Cubs signed Pie.

signing him was the good part though. his development after that (hendry took over in 2002) is what dude is questioning

He is a can’t miss prospect.

He can’t miss the 2nd baseman’s glove when trying to steal 2nd and can’t miss arguing every single call an ump makes, whether good or bad.

He can’t complain about not getting chances to play everyday. He stunk in the field, couldn’t swing the bat, and can’t steal a base to save his life. Honestly this move should have happened months ago.

I can’t imagine anyone claiming Pie. Woe to the team that does.

Someone will give him a shot because he’s still only 26. I can’t remember ever seeing a guy with so much speed be so incompetent on the basepaths though.

He’s an incredibly nice guy. I’m definitely rooting for him, and not just because I’m an Orioles fan. Hopefully we can put two and two together and realize that he should never bat against lefties. EVER. He does a good job against righties though. And considering that I think there’s only one lefty closers in the majors right now and he’s not even in the AL, if I’m Buck, I wouldn’t hesitate to use him as a pinch hitter during the late innings.

If he doesn’t get claimed, it’s bases solely on his salary.

Jakubauskas is way more valuable to them than Felix Pie.  Pie is arugably the worst hitter in the Majors year.
