D’Backs In On Cahill, Gio, Kuroda

By Tim Dierkes | December 8, 2011 at 11:45am CDT

11:45am: Talks between the A's and D'Backs have advanced but aren't close to completion, tweets Olney.  He reiterates that Bauer is a player of interest to Oakland.

THURSDAY, 8:49am: The A's and D'Backs have discussed the names of many prospects as a possible return for Cahill, even including Trevor Bauer, reports ESPN's Buster Olney.  Bauer, I should note, can't even be included in a deal as a player to be named later until late January.

WEDNESDAY, 1:49pm: Add Athletics righty Trevor Cahill to the list of pitchers under pursuit by the Diamondbacks, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  He says they'd need to surrender Tyler Skaggs for Gio Gonzalez, but not for Cahill.  Cahill, 23, is signed through 2015 with club options on the '16 and '17 seasons.

In November, Rosenthal reported the A's were willing to listen to trade offers for any player other than Jemile Weeks.

I love when people act like prospects stand alone on their perceived value and are not viewed as business assets. Nobody is making either team do a trade, but if you want a Gio or Cahill, you are going to have to give up one of the top young arms and a real good bat. Skaggs becomes expendable to get Gio, and Parker becomes expendable if you get Trevor. The other top pitchers would have to be PTNL, so I think they would be safe at this juncture. Davidson or Borchering fits the A’s well, whereas they may not even have a position in Arizona. I don’t think the last three names make sense do to team needs. But I could see a good reliever changing hands and allowing Parra to be brought into the deal in some nature. Both teams make out in such a case, and that is what is important.

Musky.. Read the above post I replied to!  The guy asked for basically 80% of the Dbacks farm system!  So I’m not acting like prospects stand alone.  I just laugh at people who have outrageous demands as a Couch GM.

I do apologize. Upon first reading I thought it was the inclusion of one of the top-shelf arms that had you worked up, instead of the actual grouping. I think I took the Bauer comment the wrong way and it threw me off.

Cahill = 23 yr old All Star MLB pitcher.

Banuelos = never pitched a major league inning in his life, and couldn’t crack a 4.0 ERA in AAA last year.

        Any more brilliant analyses?

I would give you a load of brilliant analysis, but it would likely go right over your head.

I will say that Banuelos reached AAA as a 20 year-old and that using a seven-start sample is ridiculous.

Cahill pitched in 178 innings in MLB at 21. Banuelos is not going to pitch 178 innings in MLB next year. Cahill’s pitchfx is pretty impressive, the guy has tons of movement-in fact too much movement-on his stuff.
Banuelos needs more time in the minors to improve his control.

LOL at “Banuelos reaching AAA as a 20 year old”! Whoop de doo, Cahill was in a big league rotation at 21 and an all star at 22. Cahill is infinitely more valuable than a prospect, and he’s locked up on a team friendly contract for avery long time with 2 club options.

Ready to admit you said something silly yet?

The Yankees won’t trade Banuelos for Gio let alone Cahill. Cahill pitched 178 innings because he was in Oakland, not knocking his talent. Banuelos would be in the A’s rotation now because they are rebuilding

I still like Cahill a lot, not as an ace but a quality #3 or so. Can’t afford to give the farm for him though. He doesn’t have the ace quality like Gio, but I’d take him on my team anyday.

Cahill is much better than a number three…. Is he a clear-cut ace? No, not yet. But young ground ball pitchers often battle inconsistency.

There arent many 22 year old clear-cut aces in MLB history, Cahill will most likely get there and be a beast when he’s about 27-28.

Which, ideally, is around when a new A’s stadium would be opening. I’d rather they have a beast of a pitcher when they move to SJ, than a still-developing 23-year old pitcher again…

Gio, on the other hand, can nab some nice prospects that could have a year or two in the majors by the time the new park is ready.

Cahill’s demise is ovverrated, he’s onlyt 23. he had a mid 3’d era in late july…terrible august, then got back on track in september. I guarantee 95 % of teams in mlb would take him in their rotation.

If A’s stadium situation wasnt so screwed up they wouldnt consider trading bailey/gio/cahill

Well they kind of are listening to these offers in hopes someone gives them a big haul so they can aim to have a good team in 3 years when the new park opens up. Thats the hope, at least.

Cahill is just not as good as his ’09 era suggested. He’s still a solid pitcher, but he’s not an ace by any means. It’s not that strange to see that his era jumped up to where his peripherals suggested it would be. Which is in the 3.9-4.2 range.

Did the new CBA change when a drafted player can be traded?  If I remember correctly, under the old rules a drafted player couldn’t be traded until a year after he signed.  Wouldn’t that make Bauer untradeable until late July 2012?

Right.  I saw what was written.  I wondered why he can be traded in January.

EDIT – They edited the original post. He can’t be actually traded until later, but he can’t even be included as a PTBNL until January.

That’s why I don’t think anything will happen.  Unless the CBA has changed the rules on trading drafted players, they can’t be traded until a year from signing.  Even if you can announce a PTBNL in late January, that means that Bauer couldn’t change hands until late July.  No team is going to let a prospect either play for their old team over half a season, or sit out half a season waiting to be traded.

I’d love the Tigers to go after Jemile Weeks, but of course he’s the only player the A’s won’t trade. Would Jacob Turner and Austin Jackson plus a PTBNL be a reasonable trade for Jemile Weeks and Gio Gonzalez? AJax is expendable on the condition that it seems likely the Tigers will get Cespedes, as they are reportedly going all-in for him. When Illytch really wants a player, he usually gets him.

    Tigers potential lineup
    2b) Weeks
    RF) Boesch
    CF/LF) Cespedes/Young
    1b) MCab
    DH) VMart
    LF/CF) Young/Cespedes
    C) Avila
    SS) Peralta
    3b) Inge/Kelly

    P) Verlander
    P) Gio Gonzalez
    P) Fister
    P) Scherzer
    P) Porcello/Smyly
