Giants Won’t Re-Sign Beltran Or Ross

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 7:13pm CDT

The Giants won't re-sign Carlos Beltran or Cody Ross this winter, GM Brian Sabean told reporters, including John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter link). Manager Bruce Bochy hinted as much, after yesterday's Angel Pagan acquisition, saying the Giants seemed "pretty set" in the outfield, writes Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News.

"Simply put," Sabean said. "With Ross, we could never get on the same page. And Beltran, we knew it was going to be a stretch."

Here are some other Sabean highlights from Shea and Baggarly:

  • The Giants' payroll is maxed out. They'll have to decide whether to tender a contract to Jeff Keppinger or Mike Fontenot, since they can only afford to retain one. With the help of Matt Swartz, MLBTR projected Fontenot to earn about half as much as Keppinger, so Fontenot may have the edge.
  • Guillermo Mota is choosing between two different payout structures, but both Giants offers are for one year with a big league guarantee.
  • No other roster moves are expected besides non-tenders and minor league signings.
  • If the Giants hadn't traded Ramon Ramirez, they would have tendered him a contract.

No space for Beltran or Ross in the already overloaded outfield

What a dud. The Giants owners are thinking like most short term corporate types of public companies. They should have expanded payroll for a year to at least $150m. Then brought it in when the Zito and Rowan contracts fall off. Now the Dodgers will get new owners, Dbacks keep signing and spending. When they finish third at best and Timmy and Cain leave they will done.

With our pitching we simply still have a great shot especially with Posey, Freddy, and Pablo back for a full season. We’ll struggle for runs, but the Giants still have a very good shot of winning the division.

I dont really disagree.    Certainly Beltran would have helped.   AZ also spent most of the year without Drew last year, so he (assuming he eventually gets back to 100%) will be an improvement over Bloomquist.

ya, that trade looks pretty poor right now. Nicely done by the mets though. Wonder why they didn’t move Reyes…particularly if had thoughts about a rebuild.

no..their replacing ross and torres. posey being back in the lineup will replace beltrans bat, as long as he performs like he did before he was hurt.

Why don’t they trade Bruce Bochy? You could throw a dart out the window and hit a better manager.

Though I guess since his team won the World Series two years ago he’ll never leave.

They could trade him, but they’d have to eat his whole salary, and possibly throw in a PTBNL!

Okay so we have Sheirholtz, Cabrera, Pagan, Huff, Belt, that can play outfield.  Then we have Huff, Belt, Pill that can play 1st.  Plus you have to think of Posey playing 1st so he doesn’t have “strain” on his body from catching.  I’m thinking we’re going to make a trade before the trade deadline that sends Huff and some other relief pitcher to a team for a mediocre player, albeit an outfielder or infielder.  We should just make that trade now and get a decent shortstop in return.  Those are just Pipe dreams though.  As for FonteNOT and Keppinger, although Kepp is worth more he’s FAR more valuable than Fontenot.  Kepp almost NEVER strikes out, look at his stats. It’s unheard of in a giants lineup.  Keep Kepp and let fontenot go, end of story.

Keppinger can only play a week 2nd. Fonetenot can play 2nd, SS, and 3rd. Hitting is about the same career wise. Fontenot make half as much. Fontenot stays

I hate this team. Replace Beltran with Melky Cabrera and trade away Sanchez. We’ve gotten worse since last year. Next up we’re going to sign Omar Vizquel.

Now where is the Giants offense going to come from???? Worst offense in the league last year and now they are hoping for production from Pagan and Melky. Don’t think it’s going to work.

As disappointing as this sounds Posey and Sanchez are back. So let’s hope for great health and no freak accident collisions. Those two already make the offense a whole lot better. Lineup will have to be this…

    1. Pagan CF
    2. Sanchez 2B
    3. Sandoval 3B
    4. Posey C
    5. Huff LF
    6. Belt/Pill 1B
    7. Schierholtz RF
    8. Crawford SS
    9. Pitcher

Left handed heavy still need some sort of RH power off the bench. My guess is that the Giants will now try to extend Cain and Lincecum as priority number 1 after the winter meetings.

The Giants will be worse at Pitching by getting rid of Ramirez and Sanchez. On offense, they swapped Beltran, Ross, and Torres for Melky and Pagan. Not looking good for the Giants.

Come on ownership group. There’s no reason why they should not be trying to make a Beltran contract work. And now it looks like they don’t need to outbid a deep pockets club like the Red Sox. You think Timmy and Cain want to sign long term deals after watching these ho-hum moves and then hearing “we’re done”????

I really wish the Giants could find some sucker to take Huff’s contract, that is looking like a really bad deal now. Let’s not forget Zito and Rowand’s deal’s either. Without those deals, we could easily have Reyes and Beltran in the lineup.

Let me get this straight. The Giants have made two moves (Melky and Pagan) both of which were said to have saved money, and yet there is no money to spend on any free agents? So we had negative dollars to spend this offseason. SMH

Someone was joking (I think) about signing of Omar Vizquel. Now that we know we are not spending anything, I don’t think it would be a bad idea, he could mentor Crawford and play once or twice a week. (Worked for the Rangers with Andrus).

Another thought, now that Beltran’s market seems to be very thin, isnt there a way we can sign him with some deferred money (ala Bonds) or backload his contract once Rowand and Zito money is out the way? What would take to sign him 2/20 with an option?

Will they though? I really doubt it. I love my giants but damn, its hard to not be mad when we have known for years that we need a power bat in the lineup, yet we have not been given one. Its not like we are asking for a Pujols or Fielder (God knows we have zero chance at that). We are asking for Beltran here, a guy that will not require a lot of years or 20 Mil or even 15 mil.

You would think that all those sellouts and all they money that has been coming, product of the World Series, would be able to provide for that.

Yeah the ownership group is being cheap right now, we sacrificed with the sellouts and they thank us this way. Rowand and Zito’s contracts infuriate me, we could have gotten reyes at least. More than Beltran. They better consider backloading a contract at least.

The ownership group should have expanded the payroll just for this year, then bring it back down next year. At least give a oppurtunity to get a impact position player damn

Are you as excited as I about having Zito for 2 more years and then a $4 million buyout for the year after that? Maybe getting married this offseason will get Zito’s head straight. We all know he was messed up over his breakup with Alyssa Milano.

Peter Mcgowan did some great things, first and foremost keeping the giants here, and signing bonds, then AT&T. But that zito deal is just a crime.
Yeah marry Miss Missouri or whoever she is should change him. Zito should be feeling great. Maybe he goes back to his 2002 form because of it? lol

It doesn’t even seem like The Giants are kicking the tires on Beltran.  I guess I’m out of the loop but it doesn’t seem they would even have that much competition for his services.
