Potential Top Draft Pick Giolito Sprains Elbow

By Tim Dierkes | March 7, 2012 at 1:18pm CDT

Highly-regarded high school righty Lucas Giolito sprained the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow yesterday and will be out six to ten weeks, reports Eric Sondheimer of the L.A. Times.  The hard-throwing senior doesn't need surgery, coach Matt LaCour told Sondheimer, but he and his teammates are crushed.  Giolito was regarded as the best high school player in the 2012 draft, but now he may be more likely to honor a commitment to UCLA.  As Baseball America notes, the new collective bargaining agreement's draft restrictions make it much harder for Giolito to fall in draft position and still receive a ton of money.

The “occupiers” are very happy.. This young kid could still have cashed in big before that useless agreement was made, but alsas.. These young kids have all been thrown under the bus by Selig and his cronies.

How many HS kids I wonder could have gotten major $$, but go to school, then get hurt, or just flame out and never get drafted? I wonder if the “occupy” crowd here ever thought of that before they hammer the new agreement, or cutting down on teams who used to spend 8-10m on the draft every year??

Those teams were spending on the draft the last few years. it was a few others i have a feeling who were influencing that particular part of the CBA.

They were picketing the wrong area..Went plum loco…

those are the top three spenders since 2007. the rest of the top 10 are boston, baltimore, tampa, toronto, seattle, san diego, and arizona

I am still looking for Houston somewhere on that list and would have listed Oakland also, but you guys were prepared by naming IFA 😉

those high 1st round picks took up a huge chunk of that amount.. Lets not leave that outta’ there now… Most of the teams didn’t pass over the Fields type players because they couldn’t sign them…

the pirates last year proved again that it’s been a choice all along when they threw $5M at josh bell in the second round

With the new draft restrictions, a team may look to sign him for a relatively modest signing bonus (if he proves to have fully recovered). With that said, he still stands to lose money and leverage if he decides to sign.

This thread would make more sense if back-to-back comments weren’t removed.

It’s $9.131 MM and that’s for the first 10 rounds

wow, two possible top 10 picks get pretty bad injuries this last month…talk about bad luck, or unfortunate-circumstance luck if you’re a fringe first rounder/top 10-15

This really hurts the Twins.  They really need ace potential pitching and could have had Appel or a healthy Giolito (whichever the Astros wouldn’t have taken at #1).  Now they will most likely have to look at another position with the Astros almost assured to take Appel.
They will most likely take another “athletic HS outfielder” in Byron Buxton.  We can wait 6 years to see him just like Aaron Hicks.
