Rockies Designate Eliezer Alfonzo For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 8, 2012 at 10:48am CDT

The Rockies designated catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for assignment, according to the team's transactions page. The Rockies appear to have removed the 33-year-old from their 40-man roster to create space for left-hander Christian Friedrich, who will start tomorrow's game.

Alfonzo had an impressive .319/.347/.777 line with 12 homers in 101 plate appearances at Triple-A Colorado Springs last year. He owns a .290/.332/.475 batting line in a minor league career that spans 15 seasons and has experience in six MLB campaigns, most recently with the 2011 Rockies.

He didn’t play at all this season thus far. Believe he is suspended and the Rockies had him on the restricted list. I don’t know how DFA’ing him creates a spot for Friedrich…

Those 12 HRs in 101 Triple-A PAs came last season, not this one.  Alfonzo hasn’t played yet this year.  He was suspended for being a performance enhancing drug using cheater

Interesting road traveled.  Browsing his BR page, that’s a lot of bus trips and squatting behind the dish.

Eh, it’s tough material to work with.  Got anything better you can think of using Eliezer?

Strange that this happens at exactly the same time that another player (Mota) gets suspended 100 games for the same 2nd positive drug test. Guess that reminded the Rockies they had a guy sitting on their restricted list for 100 games that they should get rid of!

Alfonzo has been on the restricted list all season. Therefore, DFA’ing him does not create a 40-man roster spot for Friedrich, since being on the restricted list means being taken off the 40-man roster. More than likely, his suspension was about to end, and instead of putting him back on the roster, the Rockies are DFA’ing Alfonzo to release him or send him outright to AAA-Colorado Springs.

He should be a greeter at GNC.
