Roy Oswalt Rumors: Saturday

By Mike Axisa | May 19, 2012 at 9:23pm CDT

Free agent right-hander Roy Oswalt popped back up on the rumor radar yesterday, as he recently auditioned for the Red Sox and Phillies. He also plans to throw for two more teams and is reportedly looking to sign relatively soon so he can be back on the mound by next month. Let's keep track of the day's Oswalt rumors right here, with the latest up top…

  • Oswalt threw for the Rangers yesterday, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). The situation is the same as it was this offseason, however. Oswalt wants to start but Texas doesn't have a spot for him with both Scott Feldman and Alexi Ogando serving as extra starters in the bullpen. Rosenthal thinks the Rangers could trade Colby Lewis to make room for Oswalt, but there's no indication they're considering it, and there's no guarantee Oswalt would be better than Lewis (Twitter).
  • Oswalt's return to the Phillies is possible but not probable, explains Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com.
  • The Rangers were simply doing their due diligence with Oswalt, a source told Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telegram (via Twitter).

Wouldn’t mind seeing him on our pitching staff – lord knows we have some issues

The Orioles probable should take a gander.
More importantly is Roy Oswalt interested in coming to Baltimore?
Also, what is Dan Duquette’s and his Merry Band of Men interest in The Oz?

The problem is what kind of shape is Ol Roy? Plus, his attitude? I didn’t think he wanted to pitch anymore. Zach Britton should be healthy soon and the O’s rotation has been pretty good as of late. The Orioles should be more focused on tightening up their infield defense than anything else right now and making sure it stays tight!

Let the Sillies and the Red Sox types knock themselves out trying to figure out Oswalt is what I say! (type)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don’t think Oswalt is going to sign with the Orioles. He will probably sign with either the Braves, Rangers, Cardinals, or Red Sox. Maybe the Astros as a sleeper team, but I doubt it.

If Bob wants him bad enough, he will find the money to sign Oswalt. The bigger question is if Oswalt wants to sign with the Reds.

I see him in a Braves uniform. Can’t let the Nats or Phils get him.

Just have a feeling Nolan still wants him here in Texas and this is where he wants to be. Why else would the Rangers have him pitch in a session for them?

Keep up the appearance of interest, or just due diligence as they said in case they want/need him later on.  It was only a bullpen session, it’s not like they invested a lot of time or money to humor him.

I think he’d be a perfect fit in Kansas City.

Roy Oswalt is exactly what the Mets need. We have to strengthen the rotation (even though the pen has also been a big weaknesses, namely Acosta & Francisco). Gee has been practically batting practice against opposing teams and needs to be sent down to AAA Buffalo ASAP, Niese has really struggled his last few starts, Hefner looked good today but who knows if he can keep it up (Young is coming back so he’ll probably go back to AAA afterwards). Only ones we can rely on are Santana & Dickey. We need another body in the rotation who can help us right the ship again.

Oswalt for half a season or Lewis with team control for a few more seasons? If I were Texas that would be a no brainer, Lewis. Oswalt the past few seasons has had health issues to boot so as a GM of any team that is more than likely coming under serious consideration. At this stage oh his career Oswalt is on most rotations a 4 guy for a contender who will be seeking top 2 money as well.

Colby Lewis is in an option year. That being said, it does seem like a deal that doesn’t have a lot of upside. I’d save my money and stay with Colby

He keeps wanting to go to the Cardinals.  They should take another look and stop being so cheap.  This Lance Lynn pipe dream is going to burst wide open.  Lynn is far more valuable in what is quickly becoming a train-wreck bullpen.

I think Ruben Amaro is thinking that if he signs Oswalt and the team is in contention, then he has Roy Oswalt. BUT if that doesn’t work out, he can flip him. It’s a win-win.

Yeah, Susie Waldman will be screeching about Oswalt signing with the Yankees before the end of June.

Maybe the Yanks could introduce him by having Andy Pettite carry him onto the field on his shoulders.
