Justin Upton Rumors: Wednesday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 18, 2012 at 11:05am CDT

Justin Upton will be traded — it’s a question of whether the Diamondbacks make a deal now or over the winter, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported this morning. Upton, who can block trades to the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and Indians, has drawn interest from many teams, including the Pirates, Blue Jays and Yankees. Here are the latest Upton-related rumors, with the most recent updates up top:

  • Much of the interest in Upton is coming from non-contenders, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports. It’s becoming increasingly likely that the Diamondbacks will wait until the offseason to trade Upton.
  • Though the Red Sox love Upton’s ability, they haven’t called the Diamondbacks about him, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweets.

I’d love Upton in TO, an OF of Bautista/Rasmus/Upton would be tasty. Yes I know Toronto needs pitching, but when a hitter that is young and under control is on the trade market teams should always pursue it imo.

Absolutely – and it’s exactly what AA has tried to do with others like Rasmus & Escobar etc.

Gose, Hechavarria & Syndergaard should be about enough to get it done, then sign a free agent starting pitcher in the off-season.

It’d be nice to have Upton come home to Virginia and play for the Nats but Rizzo seems content to sit on his hands this deadline…

Why do the Nats need Upton? Not saying that any team couldn’t use Upton, but the Nationals would be one of the last teams i’d be looking at.

Personally I think that whatever shells he has to fire in terms of prospects is going toward a quality starting pitcher once your beast gets shut down on his innings limit…

Upton to Detroit for “untouchable” Castellanos and Boesch.  Possibly some lesser pieces thrown in there.  Maybe work in a Peralta for Drew also…

We don’t want Boesch. We have Parra to be starting OF and many outfielders in AAA that are well suited to be 4th OF. I’d take Castellanos, Turner, Oliver, Peralta for Upton, Drew, and Roberts if the Tigers would take it.

Didn’t realize your OF was set for years to come with Parra who can’t hit lefties and Young you can’t hit his weight. Not saying Boesch is the next great thing, but he would certainly stand a chance of cracking the lineup.

The team is high on Adam Eaton and AJ Pollock… both MLB ready. Don’t need an OF and I didn’t realize that you had no knowledge of the Dbacks thinking on this matter even though it has been widely reported.

he and the diamondbacks negotiated that into his contract when they signed it.

and the four teams change every year.

3 team trade with Padres. dbacks need a 3rd baseman.

      What do you think?

      DBacks – Headley + Marte
      Pirates – Upton
      Padres – Skaggs + Taillon

      Headley = Skaggs
      Upton = Taillon + Marte + Headley

Just curious, since I’m bored at work.

Padres would jump on that deal, basically getting 2 top pitching prospects for a slightly above average 2rd baseman.  AZ certainly wouldnt do it, giving up Upton AND Skaggs?

Actually I’m an Angels fan. I just wanted him back in California. Ok Skaggs is too high but I’m pretty close. Swap out Skaggs for a lower pitcher from the DBacks and maybe an outfielder like Eaton. What about that?

        • Brandon Stubbs Calvert

I really dont think thats close either lol.  For one i think headley is not that good.  268 career BA plus he is 4 years older than upton.  2nd As of right now the Pirates would not even do taillon and marte for upton straight up so i doubt if this is any different.  Third dbacks shouldnt have to give anyone up, whether that be their top SP skaggs or their top OF Eaton prospects

        • James Attwood

With Bauer in the bigs, Skaggs is the Dbacks #1 prospect. Eaton is a top 10. The Dbacks are not about to trade Upton for a moderately deccent 3B and yet another OF prospect, especially since MArte is basically Eaton, but a year sooner.
The likelihood of the Dbacks trading Eaton at all is very small. The only way a top 10 is going anywhere is for a big haul in return. As in, stud power. Headley is nice, but he’s not a star.

    Why not to the Cubs?

Dempster, LaHair, and Javier Baez for Justin Upton.  I think it works for both teams.

I would not give them Baez.  If Upton was really that great of a teammate and player why would the Diamondbacks give him up? Upton reminds me of a younger version of Soriano.

Theo & Co. will make this happen. I’d hate to give up a teammate like Demp but he is on the down-side of his career. Upton would be a beast @ Wrigley…..

Am I missing something here?  I know the Dbacks are going to pay him a lot of money the next two years however he’s only 24 years old and has plenty of time to get back on track.  I’ve never seen a team so desperate to part with a young player with so much upside.  Do they just not like the guy?

My guess is that he has some sort of lingering injury that the Dbacks only know of. It’s quite bizarre… he’s not killing the team. If anything, it’s our former 1-2 punch in Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson who are killing the team.

Upton to the Phils? It would help them to get younger which is exactly what they need to do. I don’t know if he or Pence would play in left. It would also put a nice big bat behind Ryan and if it didn’t help them this year it definitely would be a quicker fix then waiting for their young OF in the farm

The Braves are a great fit after the season. Chipper retires, Prado moves to 3B. Trade for Upton. I’m not going to speculate on a package but Braves certainly have the farm system to make a deal. Just a matter of how big the package is…tough to get max value when he only has 7 HR’s…D’Backs will be selling low unless he has a big 2nd half. Braves have been searching for RH power bat to play corner OF for the past few years.
